Hola, les escribo para comentarles que va a haber un encuentro de hack (en el sentido de curiosidad informática), denominado Hackmitin, del 9 al 11 de noviembre en la ciudad de México. El año pasado presenté Bitcoin y le gustó a mucha gente. Este año para no repetirme no pensaba hacerlo, pero algunos lo pidieron así que veremos... Igual si alguien quiere ir y presentarlo sola/solo o junto conmigo, estaría chido.

Va a ser el 4to hackmitin mexicano:

• 2009 en la ciudad de México, en la ZAM (hacklab okupado)
• 2010 en la ciudad de Oaxaca, en diferentes lugares (intento de evento decentralizado)
• 2011 en Tecámac (estado de México), en la Cereza
• Este año en la ciudad de Puebla, en ADA
  

El hackmitin es un evento auto-organizado, es decir que es organizado por las personas que participan, de manera colaborativa. No hay un grupo de organizadores sino que todo el mundo trata de echar la mano con lo que sepa hacer, y todo el mundo toma las decisiones.

No iba a poner la lista de todos los países del mundo, entonces puse los países hispano-hablantes, y luego nada más por zona/continente.

Me parece que lo más interesante en la encuesta sería decir en qué país vivimos, no de qué país somos originalmente, ya que lo interesante es organizarnos para tener negocios/cambios de Bitcoins en nuestros países de residencia. Por ejemplo soy francés pero vivo en México, y lo relevante es México. (L@s que quieran contar de dónde son, lo pueden hacer en el foro.)

The Genderplayful marketplace is a project that aims at selling/buying clothes that really fit people, instead of trying to make people fit in gender-binary clothes. Well at least that's how I could describe it in a couple of words. There's an introductory video on the website, it describes the project in a much more accurate way, so please have a look at it!

The project is currently in a fundraising phase, where Bitcoin could be very useful. Later on, when the project actually starts and buying genderplayful clothes is possible, Bitcoin would obviously be a very neat option too.

Interestingly enough, they're not happy with Paypal. I can see a couple of similarities between Bitcoin's and Genderplayful's sensibilities (although I'd prefer not to start debating them here because it's not really the point), so I figured we could tell them about Bitcoin (I just did, through their survey).

What do you think?

For the record: the point is the possible connection between the Genderplayful marketplace project and Bitcoin, please avoid off-topic and/or offensive gender-related debates/jokes (I decided to ignore the threads about women and bitcoin because of the sexist atmosphere back there, but I won't be able to ignore this thread, being the OP).

One of the tough things we need to improve for everyday use of bitcoin is how to remember, share and input bitcoin addresses. You can't give your bitcoin address as easily as you give your email address.

To address this issue, a couple of wonderful bitcoin address shortening services, such as FirstBits and payb.tc, started to appear. They're actually so useful that bitcoin handling tools (e.g. the original client, a mobile phone app, etc.) would highly benefit from integrating them wherever a bitcoin address is expected. The interface would go, e.g.: "Pay to: payb.tc/da".

Obviously, it wouldn't be safe to be hard-bound to one specific shortening service, so we need to be able to parse any random HTML page and extract the bitcoin address it contains. Where interactive use is possible, such programs would optionally handle the case where there are several addresses, and let the user choose one from a list.

I long ago suggested a <link />-based way to do it, and I still think it would work well, as well as be easy to implement:

In another thread, TTBit pointed out an interesting service idea:

Firstbits.com could allow pointing of the address to another, no?

That would be automatic redirection. Mybitcoin already offers payment redirection, but the idea could be generalized.

Let's suppose you want to automatically redirect any payment made from address A to address B. You could run a daemon that knows the private key for address A and automatically forwards to address B any payment made to A. Such a daemon can be an independent piece of software, or simply something that polls bitcoind regularly via JSON-RPC. That would be the self-hosted version.

For people who can't or don't want to bother running such a daemon locally, someone could provide a service to handle that automatically for you. Of course, you would need to send them the private key, so they would need to prove trustworthy and secure, just like any other online wallet. So all in all, that would be the forward-only online wallet version.

An optional feature of the online service would be coin mixing/laundering: depending on the situation, you might or might not want people to be aware of the forwarding.

Je me suis rendu compte que la page "Trade" sur le wiki francophone est en fait une copie de la page anglophone à un moment donné, avec les titres traduits. Ça pose le problème de la synchronisation par exemple... et surtout ce n'est pas vraiment utile: si une personne est intéressée par ces sites, donc si elle sait lire l'anglais, elle saura de toute façon lire aussi les titres en anglais ! Du coup cette page n'a pas vraiment d'utilité et il manque clairement une page pour les utilisateurs francophones nuls en anglais (c'est pas un pléonasme mais presque... et dans tous les cas ça représente une assez grande quantité de gens pour que ça vaille le coup).

J'ai donc fait une page Commerce destinée à accueillir les sites francophones acceptant les bitcoins. Pour l'instant je n'ai mis que les deux seuls sites d'échange dotés d'une interface en français (VirWox et bitcoin-central) pour amorcer la pompe. Je laisse les propriétaires du reste des sites s'annoncer (sur ce forum j'ai vu passer une loterie, un service de mise en relation téléphonique, divers jeux, etc.).

J'insiste sur le fait qu'il serait pratique que cette page mentionne des services en français uniquement. Après si vraiment ça semble important à des gens de garder la grosse liste de sites anglophones mais avec les titres de sections traduits en français, faites-vous plaisir (les deux pages ont des titres différents donc peuvent très bien coexister), mais je répète il faudra vous taper la synchronisation régulière pour pas avoir une page obsolète. Perso je propose sa suppression.

Es imposible entender los últimos cambios hechos en la wiki sin revisar los "diffs" uno por uno. Por favor, no es muy difícil poner un pequeño comentario tipo "traducción de un párrafo más", "corrección ortográfica", o lo que sea.

Por cierto hay el mismo problema en la página Trade en inglés: para saber qué nuevos sitios aceptan bitcoin, tengo que aventarme todos los nuevos diffs de vez en cuando.

Está chido tener una herramienta colectiva, pero hace falta un poco de auto-disciplina.

Nota para el moderador: Por favor puedes crear una sección para trabajos de documentación? Ya son varios hilos que podrían agruparse ahí.

Virtapay (or please use my referral link) is an interesting, albeit centralized, virtual payment system. It's not a baby project anymore, since they've already taken good steps towards actual, real-life payment possibilities, and they're going to implement some more of their good ideas in the future.

One bad idea they're having, though, is to require their users to link their account to a Facebook account. Since I'm not using Facebook and I'm not planning to, ever, I think I'll end up having to sell all of my Virtapay dollars (for bitcoins, obviously) and continue to watch the project grow from the outside. I already stepped out of a very interesting project some years ago when Orkut suddenly required people to log in through a Google account, so I'll deal with it (I'll try to not be pissed off if/when Virtapay dollars get more value in the future, like bitcoins did just after some people sold lots of them very cheap!).

Hola, empecé la página de Comercio en la wiki en español.

Propongo que esa página no sea una traducción de la página Trade, sino que vayamos agregando únicamente los servicios que existan en español. Total si alguien sabe leer inglés puede consultar directamente la página en inglés... Más bien ofrezcamos una página clara y agradable para la gente que sólo habla nuestro idioma. Pueden ser servicios que existan en la página Trade en inglés y que cuenten con una interface multilingüe, o servicios únicamente en español.

A nivel de organización, propongo una organización por paises, a ver cómo sale. Me parece lo más útil para la gente mientras sean pocos los servicios. Ya cuando haya un montón de servicios podremos organizarlos de otra forma si nos parece necesario.

Hola, le hablé de Bitcoin a una amiga mía que es maestra de francés en Oaxaca, y dice que no quiere entrarle al "trading" (cambios por otra divisa) pero sí le gusta la idea de cobrar en bitcoins.

Si les interesa o conocen a gente interesada, avísenme por PM (mensaje personal) para que nos pongamos de acuerdo. Si tienen dudas que les puedan servir a más personas, pregunten acá mejor.

El precio no sé bien, pero básicamente será el precio normal de una clase de idioma, convertido a bitcoins en el momento del acuerdo.

México tiene un fenómeno económico y social muy peculiar: mucha gente se va a trabajar a Estados Unidos, y le manda dinero a su familia desde allá. El problema es que no hay ninguna forma gratis (ni siquiera barata) de mandar el dinero.

Bitcoin podría resolver este problema, porque en Estados Unidos es muy fácil cambiar dólares a bitcoins y mandarlos a México a través del programa. Ahora sólo falta gente en México para cambiar esos bitcoins.

Obviamente este ejemplo de Estados Unidos no es el único motivo para desarrollar el uso de Bitcoin en México, pero yo creo que puede influir mucho, y que si logramos encontrar un sistema práctico, la voz podría correr bastante rápido.

Entonces propongo varias cosas:
 - Que la gente interesada en comprar bitcoins en México lo mencione acá, y que digan de qué parte son.
 - Que la gente ubicada en México e interesada en vender bitcoins haga lo mismo.
 - Que listemos las formas prácticas y rápidas de mandar dinero dentro de un punto a otro del país, con las ventajas y los inconvenientes de cada una.
 - Más generalmente, podemos pensar en formas de facilitar el uso de Bitcoin en el caso específico de México. En cambio, las problemáticas comunes a todos los paises podrían ser discutidas mejor en otros hilos.

Además de comprar bitcoins, otra forma de facilitar su uso sería aceptarlos en su negocio. Entonces igual, la gente que tiene negocio en México y acepta pagos en bitcoins (o conoce un negocio que los acepte) podría mencionarlo acá.

Everytime I close Bitcoin, I get the following dialog box:

After a couple of seconds, when the application terminates, the dialog disappears without requiring any user interaction.
Sometimes, dmesg reports a segfault, sometimes not. Sometimes there's only a segfault but no dialog, although this is very rare.

I always start Bitcoin with the -server flag. Sometimes there's also -testnet, but that doesn't seem to have any impact.

The problem has been happening since I first started to use Bitcoin (0.3.16 I guess): no update ever prevented this dialog from showing up.

I'm using the prebuilt 32-bit binaries, on a Debian GNU/Linux (kernel v2.6.32) system.

It would be great to have a JSON-RPC method for listing new transactions that are newer than a particular transaction id. This would enable developpers to watch new transactions easily, by just keeping track of the latest known txid and polling that method at the rate of their choice.

A possible way to do it would be to extend listttransactions so that it accepts an optional txid argument:

If txid is given, don't show it, nor any transaction older than it.

(As a sidenote, maybe listtransactions, with or without txid, should accept filtering by transaction category: generate, send, receive, move.)

I'm just discovering Bitcoin, and I'm very impressed. The usual stuff people say: that's exactly what I was looking for, a realistic way to get independant from the banks and govs, blah, blah.  

So far I own 2.05 BTC   (2 a friend gave me, plus .05 from the bitcoin faucet), so I'm looking for a way to earn some more, so that I can start paying with Bitcoins instead of euros.

So first I would like to propose translation services. I'm French, and I live in Mexico, so I speak fluent Spanish. I also speak average English. I'd like to translate only *to* my native language, though, which is the common practice in translation, unless you don't mind not-so-natural phrasing.

I'm also a SPIP web developper. By the way, I just started a SPIP Bitcoin plugin. For the moment, it just adds a "bitcoin address" field in SPIP authors' profile, so that the field is available when designing page templates. More features will appear as soon as I come up with more ideas (maybe a #MODELE for easier "I accept Bitcoin payments, here's my address" announcement?). Of course, if you like the idea, if you want to participate, give more ideas... or bitcoins, please do!
