I'd like to do a quick survey of those that have unverified MtGox accounts that can not withdraw your bitcoins becasue it's not verified. The survey is to see who will either not verify (effectively losing said bitcoins) OR who would be willing to take a loss on those holdings rather than verify. If you're one that would rather take a loss than verify, what percentage loss are you willing to take - post that in a comment.

I'll put up a poll. It will be interesting to see how much btc is out there in this situation. There may be a simple solution outside of verification - one which does not require taking MtGox to court.

So, please consider to participate in the survey above if you have an unverified account with bitcoins that can not be withdrawn due to a need to verify first.
3  Economy / Service Discussion / MtGox . . . Warning about MtGox . . . TAKE THE NEW POLL!! on: November 13, 2013, 12:56:13 AM
Historically, people have been able to deposit and withdraw bitcoins on MtGox without verifying identity. So, as long as you didn't want to withdraw to a bank (to fiat) no verification was needed.
Their website always read that you needed verification to withdraw to your bank. They have a statement that reads:
"Attention Users: All withdrawals and deposits require account verification."

That was no surprise since that was understood to mean for bank withdrawals & deposits.  So, I opened an anonymous account simply to trade in/out of the swings of the market. With the only intention of ever withdrawing bitcoins. And MtGox accepted my deposit without verification. So, today I wanted to withdraw bitcoin to donate to the Philippine disaster... What do you know, I see that i can't withdraw bitcoin, and amessage reads:

"Your account is currently pending review, please visit https://mtgox.com/forms/verification"

If it required verification to make a deposit, they should have never accepted my deposit. I should have received that message BEFORE being able to make a deposit. In the scammer world, this is called "bait and switch". Unless there is some misunderstanding, then because of this, I want to close my anonymous MtGox account. The stupid thing is, they may ask for my identity to close an account where I never made a bank transaction.

You have been warned. Don't deposit into MtGox to only swing or day trade bitcoin unless you are willing to jump hurdles and give up your personal info.

UPDATE:
I found this on the MtGox website [my emphasis]. So, my hope is there is some kind of misunderstanding on my part:

"TOKYO - JAPAN - May 30, 2013

Statement Regarding Account Verifications

The Bitcoin market continues to evolve, as do regulations and conditions of compliance for Mt. Gox to continue bringing secure services to our customers. It our responsibility to provide a trusted and legal exchange, and that includes making sure that we are operating within strict anti-money laundering rules and preventing other malicious activity.

As a result, beginning May 30th, 2013 all Mt. Gox user accounts are required to be verified in order to perform any currency deposits and withdrawals. Bitcoin deposits do not need verification, and at this time we are not requiring verification for Bitcoin withdrawals.

In the past two months Mt. Gox has invested in more than doubling our verification support staff, and we are currently able to process most verifications within 24~48 hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please visit the Security Center in your Mt. Gox account if you are not already verified, and keep in mind that being careful to submit the proper documents will result in a much faster processing time.

Regards
Mt.Gox Co. Ltd Team."

4  Bitcoin / Hardware / Butterfly Labs -- Monarch (pre-order misinformation) on: September 13, 2013, 04:01:49 AM
I don't want to bash Butterfly Labs if I don't have to, and don't want to come off as petty. Forgive me if this is. But they probably should have noticed this $/GH comparison was wrong by now. (Found here: http://www.butterflylabs.com/monarch/)

Their claim may have been correct (or not) for a few days, but it has certainly been incorrect for a long time now. I hope no miners out there were mislead into buying the Monarch based on this internal advertisement. The only way this can be correct now is if BFL claims that "the competition" is some specific entity other than those listed below. Of course, that would be disingenuous.

BFL, if you are watching, please update your misleading product page.

Anyone pre-ordering could rightly ask to cancel their order if it was based in part on false information on the Butterfly Lab's website when they ordered:

9  Bitcoin / Hardware / LEGAL COURSE of ACTION Discussion --- bASIC / BitcoinASIC on: February 12, 2013, 09:38:24 AM
Disclaimer: I'm not a legal expert or qualified to give any kind of legal advice. And I'm not giving legal advice. Anything I say should be assumed to be just second hand information or an opinion. Therefore, anything I say about legal issues could be wrong.

ALL that have lost money and/or property to bASIC/BitcoinASIC:
I wanted to start this thread so that people can organize in one place to respond effectively to the business fiasco associated with Tom Van Riper's business. I'm not volunteering to represent the thread here or with any lawyers etc... but I am tired of seeing a lot of waiting and talking about what to do.

In this thread, I'd like to initiate suggested discussions towards a possible legal course of action, and perhaps actual legal action. It seems to me, that the best initial action would be to find a lawyer for consultation. And it can be discussed how to collectively pay for this lawyer, but being careful on how that would be accomplished.

So, let's discuss what needs to be discussed first. And maybe those that lost property can achieve the first step by getting a lawyer to speak with. I will propose four topics to resolve. Anyone can provide ideas for discussion, but let's keep it on task with what will help achieve the end goal - i.e. each person being compensated for property that was taken. If anyone, that has been around the forum for some time, wants to take lead on contacting a lawyer after the discussion, that would be great.

Discussion suggestions:
(1) Who here has an interest in this?
Update: Poll indicates at least 98 persons.

(2) What is the estimated collective amount of the claims, or how to determine this? (a lawyer would probably want to know this)
Update: Poll indicates at least $825,600 taken.

(3) What kinds of evidence is there? {emails, screenshots, forum discussions, phone records, credit card reports..etc..}

(4) Where/how should a good lawyer be found.
     a. Should the lawyer be in the general area of Tom's residence/place of business?
     b. List online or other suggestions, and discuss each merits.
     c. Who will contact the lawyer, and how can we collectively pay for the lawyer?
     d. Can a large conference call be held?
[Update: Progress coming. Stay tuned.]

New topic recommended from the thread:
(5) Are there any other (better or not) ways of settling this in a different way ? What I'm thinking of:
- simply someone to talk to Tom on behalf of the group and see what's really happening
- an agency for consumer protection or something like this (small claims court ? )
- debt collection company
- private investigator/debt collector

I have no idea where this will go. My guess is that it will turn into a kluge, and simply flame out. And if it does, then we can all just sit back and forget about it. So, for now, we can at least gauge the interest in a course of action.

11  Other / Off-topic / BFL Bank Wire Status on: July 02, 2012, 01:23:14 AM
Quick survey:

1. Has anyone received an email notice from BFL with instructions on funding by bank wire?

2. Ifso: When was the email received?

3. Assuming the bank wire was sent:
     a. When was the bank wire sent?
     b. Did BFL email you a notice that the bank wire had been received?
     c. What do you consider as a reasonable response time?

12  Other / Off-topic / BFL Engineer: Multiple SC Singles Configuration on: June 29, 2012, 03:42:51 AM
BFL Engineer et.al.
How will multiple SC Singles connect to a single computer? Do they each require a unique USB port, or is there a way to chain some (or all) of them together to use one USB port? The SC mini-rig will apparently plugs into one port, and I'm assuming the submodules in it are essentially SC Singles (or Jalapenos). So, a daisy-chaining feature seems like it might be doble if not available.

13  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / BFL ASIC & Difficulty Profile on: June 27, 2012, 08:56:41 PM
For those interested, I'd like to collectively see if we can determine some reasonable profile on how BFL asic may come online and how it alone may affect the difficulty from the initial shipments through subsequent months. I'll list some data and assumptions that may be helpful. Feel free to critique them and provide any other ideas or  observations that you think might be helpful.

As I understand it, difficulty is directly proportional to network hash rate (hereafter:NHR or nhr). So, if the nhr increases 120% then difficulty increases 120%.
Current nhr is ~12.5 THash as found here: http://bitcoin.sipa.be/

Regarding recent pre-orders:
Does anyone have an idea on what the first order number was in the recent pre-orders or some order number that is probably close to it? I've read some numbers around #1600. However a recent order number I saw was around #2300. I have a hypothesis that the number 1600 is just picking up from where the fpga Singles & fpga Mini-Rigs have been ordered. If we could get an average order size, then we could figure out how many Singles have been sold. And then reason that this is how many SC Singles will be ordered by tradeins alone.

One observer in a thread in the forums pointed out how the Bit-Pay (the initial pre-order method of payment) spiked in the first 24 hours. If I am not mistaken, that spike was about 50k-ish bitcoins. Using that value over a projected ten days, I did some rough math then and it came out about 8TH of BFL Sc hardware if there would be ten such days of products beign ordered(assuming the SC Single as the average H/$ value - i.e. 40GHash/$1299.

Other stuff:
* BFL has been late in shipping products. Shipping products on average about 8 weeks (can anyone verify this?)
* BFL has about three months to get some initial inventory built and ready to ship in October.
* BFL claims to have shipped 50 units per day. However, looking at past difficulty changes over the montsh does not indicate this. One BFL rep on the forum said this was b/c people were simply in large replaceing GPU's with their Singles. However, this does not make since for a miner to do, since GPU's are still arguably the fastest mining hardware. It seems more likely that this is a current shipping rate as also indicated by one BFL comment. So, we can assume a current shipping rate of 50/day (Any other thoughts on this?)
* BFL is ramping up staff (witnessed by Inaba). Also, BFL has in emaisl and the forum indicated that they were ramping up shipping. So, this may more solidify, if not improve, the above 50/units per day.

Any critiques or thoughts? Or it may be as simple as using the current production and shipping numbers and assume that only SC Singles are shipped, with a initial surge of one or two months product production coming online within the first couple weeks initial shipments are sent out.

15  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Lost Bitcoin Recovery on: May 27, 2012, 07:19:09 PM
There will be a maximum number of bitcoins discovered. Bitcoins can be lost. I realize they can be divided to so many decimal places, but disregarding how long this would take to become a problem. Assume it is.

What of the idea to "re-encrypt" (for lack of better term) any bitcoins that have shown to be inactive in all ways for something like ten years. In other words, people would have to at least relocate their bitcoins to another of their wallets accounts or spend them within ten years for them to remain in the economy. Otherwise, they could be assumed lost coins, and buried again to be re-mined (like finding some lost gold on the beach). Or re-distributed to all active wallets Tongue

Late entry: This solution could possibly be implemented when/if it does become a problem, I'd guess. But should the community have to wait to see when this happens?
16  Bitcoin / Pools / BTC Guild -- Glitch [UPDATE: The issue was resolved] on: May 09, 2012, 06:38:43 PM
It has been a long while since I logged into my mining account on BTC Guild (www.btcguild.com). I tried and appraently used the wrong password. Ooops, no problem right? Wrong. The site says the IP adderss I was at is restricted for x number of seconds. Well, despit enow using the correct password, x keeps increasing each time I try to log in. Despite even giving it a rest for hours. It's a bit insane. As long as this website has been around, you'd think they would have a streamlined login and password reset feature. It's time to find another pool. Any suggestions on pools that are well designed for the user?

LATE ENTRY UPDATE: The 'glitch' was a result of inactivity for an extended period of time. It doesn't appear to be a reason to move from BTC Guild. However, I will recommend that the webmaster change it to indicate an inactive account instead of an endless faulty password message.
17  Bitcoin / Hardware / FPGA -- DIY @ Low Cost on: May 02, 2012, 03:26:35 PM
Using retail or bulk-purchased components: Has anyone here developed any actual low cost do-it-yourself FPGA boards that have competitive or better-than competitive hash/$ rates?
If-so: Is that person willing to share or sell the design plan?

I've seen a few threads attempt to tackle this topic, but I have yet to see anything actually come from them. It seems the thread authors drop out or decide to develop the idea for their own use after some progress.

If not: Is anyone here willing to collaborate on developing such a board? And not just an FPGA board that will hash, it MUST be competitive in price...if this is even possible. It seems, so far, the best hash/$ rate is BFL's products. But if a board could be developed to be at least as good as the next best hash/$ rates, it might be worth it. Especially considering the slow product shipping time of Butterfly Labs.

19  Economy / Goods / San Diego Area - Rig Possibly for Sale on: July 21, 2011, 08:27:43 PM
I'm debating to sell my rig and extra chassis. This is just a guage for interest....

1 newly built, working mining Rig. The SSD drive would be wiped before any sell.
...Motherboard, MSI 890FXA-GD70
...1200W power supply (good quality)
...SSD Drive
...AMD Anthlon 2
...2G RAM..might be 4G.
...Quantity of 2, Radeon 6990's. (hard to find available anywhere online)
...optical & floppy drive
....4U rack mountable chassis

Also, purchase must include the 9 other 4U rack mountable chassis (almost new condition). No special name brand... they are empty other than that I am pretty sure they all have one optical drive and one floppy drive in each.
One could build a the foundations for a pretty sophisticated mining operation with these 10 chassis.

--------------------------

The chassis LOOK kind of like this...but just generally: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811128064

Conditions:
Buy everything in 'as is' condition....cash only and pick up only (location Temecula, which is north of San Diego on interstate 15).

I'm looking for $3000 for the whole lot.

If I can't sell it all, it will just keep mining. Smiley

Post replies about your level of interest (if any) or send me an email (see profile).
20  Bitcoin / Mining / SSH to Computer Behind Home Router on: June 27, 2011, 07:15:02 AM

I have a computer (miner) behind a home router. I can SSH to the miner from another computer in the same house - connected to the same router - it's simple using default local network IP addressing. However, those localized IP addresses are not directly accessible from the internet side of the router (in a remote location away from the house not behind the router). What detailed steps must be done to use an SSH client to get past the router from an outside computer to the miner that's behind the router?

Also, I'm using Putty.exe as the SSH client for now. Perhaps, there is something better...any helpful feedback would be appreciated.
