2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Local currencies + bitcoin on: July 10, 2011, 08:22:53 AM
If you ask me, local currencies are going to have to be involved if we want bitcoin to go mainstream. People like to use cash to do day-to-day transactions and local currencies are an excellent way to accomplish that. How about if we get local currencies to be backed up by bitcoins?

If you look up examples of local currencies you can see that they are actually pretty smart in getting people to use them. Basically what they do is tell merchants to offer some sort of discount for people who pay in xyz local currency. If people want that discount then they have to use the local currency. The merchants accept the local currency because they know the consumer can only spend it at merchants who accept the local currency. So if you are a mom & pop store you want to be able to compete against wal-mart you can do that by accepting these local currencies. Likewise, if the local currency is widely used its much easier to get new businesses to accept them. Would you really want to open up a cafe and not accept the local currency when 90%+ of the town prefers to use them? That way there is an incentive for both consumers and businesses to use them. Consumers get a discount and businesses get a competitive advantage against businesses that don't accept them. Plus there is always the feel good benefit that people get when they, "support the local economy."

If you ask me bitcoin + local currency is the absolute perfect combination. Especially if you combine it with technology such as bitbills.

Also its important to mention that there are several widely used local currencies in the USA, which are: berkshares, and Ithaca hours. There are hundreds of actively used local currencies all over the world.

I say instead of reinventing the wheel lets go to these existing local currencies and tell them about how bitcoin can improve their local currency.

Here are some examples of local currency:

Ithaca hours. This note is worth about 10$ USD.

Berkshares used in berkshire region of Massachusetts.

Ukiah hours used in Ukiah, California

Disney Dollar, used at Disneyland or Walt Disney World

3  Economy / Economics / What would happen if? on: July 02, 2011, 03:17:56 AM
People started borrowing money on credit cards or any source they could find. Then take the money, buy bitcoins and then file bankruptcy?
4  Bitcoin / Mining / Run your rig on renewable energy? on: June 28, 2011, 01:05:54 PM
Here is an interesting concept I was thinking about.

So we all know that the primary cost of the mining rig is the energy. For most, this is make or break. If the energy is too much you won't make any money. To solve this issue how about running the rig on renewable energy.

There are lots of places around the world that have awesome renewable energy resources that aren't tapped. Most of these resources aren't tapped because with renewable energy you need to build transmission lines so only the big renewable energy projects get developed. With running a rig there is no need for transmission line. Simply set up your renewable energy generators, connect to some transformers/power conditioning/battery then connect your rig to that. The ideal energy source would be a micro hydro setup that produces a couple KWs. If you are in a remote location then you can use satellite internet to connect to the internet.

Seems like a realistic idea if you live in a remote location.
5  Economy / Economics / My personal idea of what will make bitcoin grow very fast. on: June 27, 2011, 09:09:42 AM
It is this: Making it very easy for people to buy and sell items through the use of cell phones. The fact of the matter is that most of the world DOES NOT have internet access. However, they do have a cell phone. There are 6.7 billion people on earth. 5 billion of those people have a cell phone. Now if we want bitcoin to be big and change the world then we have to make it so its easy to conduct commerce using a cell phone and bitcoins.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / So, how many of you were hoping the price would fall off a cliff? on: June 27, 2011, 08:29:55 AM
when mtgox opened so you could buy up a crap load of bitcoins?

I ain't gonna lie, I was.

Was pretty disappointed when it only dropped to 14$. I was expecting it to drop to around 5$/each.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What will price of btc be within first 24 hours of trading? on: June 25, 2011, 10:29:14 AM

8  Economy / Economics / My idea: bitcoin debit cards. on: June 24, 2011, 12:59:55 PM
As we all know bitcoins are rather difficult to exchange and not many merchants accept bitcoins. Well, there could be a possible solution to this and I call it the bitcoin debit card.

Just like a traditional bank, you would open up an account and fund it with some bitcoins. Then you would be issued a bitcoin debit card that works with most merchants that accept credit/debit cards. You would be able to use it without having to constantly convert from btc to usd. Here is how this would work:

Lets say you want to buy gasoline at the local gas station. They only accept USD. So you pump 50$ USD worth of gas then pay using your bitcoin debit card. When this transaction is being processed the bitboin bank will sell your bitcoins and get usd which it uses to pay the 50$ bill. If the merchant accepts bitcoins then it will just transfer btc directly to their btc wallet.

This will eliminate the need to constantly buy/sell bitcoin on an exchange and make the process of using bitcoins very easy and not much of an inconvenience. You could entirely dump your fiat (except for some emergency cash under the mattress) and have your money stored entirely in btc.

You could also greatly reduce fraud by making it easy for users to transfer btc in and out of the bank. For example, if you know you are going out on the town then you could transfer some btc to your account and then go out on the town and buy whatever you like. When you get home, you can transfer all the remaining btc back to your wallet. If your account ever gets hacked then the hacker won't get away with much since there won't be any btc in the account.

If done correctly, bitcoin has the potential to be more secure than traditional banking.

10  Economy / Economics / The secret of oz [documentary] on: June 23, 2011, 10:58:20 AM
Very interesting documentary here. Its basically about how our monetary system is corrupt and needs to be reformed.

Pretty interesting documentary to watch and thinking of bitcoin as an alternative to this corrupt system. Its a long documentary (2hours) but well worth the watch if you haven't seen it.

Here is the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cq9yEVcGIU

and the full movie (free):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkq2E8mswI

The central theme is to move the power to print the money from the private fed and return it to the US treasury. This would create debt free money.

Now here is the kicker: Now that we have bitcoin. Do we even need the government or fed to control the issuing of the money? Absolutely not. We have bitcoin, where the algorithm has already been created and controls the printing of the money. By using your bitcoin client you are agreeing to the accept the code/rules of the system. We have all agreed that 21 million bitcions being generated over a geometric series is the most effective way to generate new money. Now the people (users of bitcoin) control the printing of the money. The power to print money has been moved from the feds and government and into the hands of the people. This idea is huge and could change the world.
11  Economy / Economics / bitcoin job boards on: June 23, 2011, 08:45:40 AM
Lets face it, most of the bitcoin users are a bunch of geeks and rather well educated at that.

With that being said, lets start hiring each other to do stuff. This, imo, is one of the easiest markets to tap to spend and gain bitcoins. Everyone has SOMETHING they can do that can be sold for btc. If you are an employer, tell your employees that you are going to start paying them in BTC, if they don't like it then tell them to take a hike. If you are a worker then start working for employers who pay in btc. Might as well start hustling for that coin now! If we want bitcoin to be successful then we have to put our money where our mouth is and that means trying to only buy and sell things with bitcoins.

Here is a list of some btc job sites:

https://workforbitcoin.com/
http://www.forbitcoin.com/
http://www.bitcoinjobs.com/
http://btcworker.com/
http://bitgigs.com/

if you have any other job sites you know about please post!

Thanks!

15  Economy / Economics / Looks like people setting up local bitcoin exchanges. on: June 18, 2011, 12:49:54 PM
Was looking on craigslist in different cities. Looks like people are buying/selling bitcoins in cash. Obviously they don't offer competitive rates but still good idea if lots of people start dealing locally. Thats how the person-to-person bitcoin market starts. First starts with these exchanges then moves to physical products then people start working directly for bitcoin. Once your working for bitcoins, then why the hell convert it to fiat. Just spend it on the physical goods and services you need.

The post i saw said the guy buys at -3$ last trade price and sells at +3$ last trade price.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Just wait, this is coming down the pipe. on: June 18, 2011, 08:24:28 AM
So we all know that bitcoin has the power to change the world (if everyone uses it). However, we are going up against a very powerful institution so powerful that I would call it the single most powerful institution on the planet - the banking institution.

This system was established when mankind was making the transition from commodity money to representative money. People would use their gold/silver and deposit it in a bank, they were issued a receipt of their deposit which they could use to redeem the gold/silver on demand. People began to use these receipts as money instead of gold/silver. This was when the banks started to gain power during the 7th century. Ever since, the banks have been establishing an ever tighter grip on society.

Today, banking institutions are insanely powerful both directly and indirectly. Over the centuries they have created vast fortunes and centralized these fortunes into a few family dynasties. They have a tight grip on society and control virtually every industry indirectly. Government and mainstream media are in their backpocket. Bought and paid for.

"Give me control over a nations currency, and I care not who makes its laws.”
Baron M.A. Rothschild

My friends, this is what bitcoin has the power to do - change the world by taking the power from the banks and giving it back to the people. We haven't had decentralized money for well over the past 1,000 years and now bitcoin has the power to do that.

With that being said, bitcoin has an uphill battle. The banks will try everything in their power to destroy bitcoin. They will draft laws against bitcoin and they will demonize people who use bitcoin. For quite some time, we have sought to escape these banks. We have used gold/silver to slightly escape. Those who bought in, were rewarded handsomely with silver/gold going through the roof. However, we have never completely been able to escape the banks. That was before bitcoin. Now we have the solution. Bitcoin is the final solution to the banking cartels of the world. With bitcoin we have the power to completely escape the banks.

Right now, the waters are relatively calm, but just wait bitcoin will be the next wikileaks. On the front page of every newspaper, on the daily news all demonizing the, "threat" of bitcoin. They'll say anything and everything to destroy bitcoin - it supports terrorists, it will destroy the economy, it isn't safe. Anything and everything, just wait. You've seen what they've done to assange.

Check it out. Go to craigslist.org and select your city. If you live in a rather large metro (LA, NY, SF etc.) You will see people selling stuff for bitcoins!

Type bitcoin into the search bar in the, "for sale" section.
