1  Other / Off-topic / Massive Server Desk Build : The Evolution on: June 01, 2019, 01:27:39 AM
Hello everyone, I figured I'd start off with a banger build post of my desk/setup.
Feel free to ask questions or post whatever about it Smiley

Here's an Imgur gallery if you'd like to have a normal interface versus clicking each link to see the images.

So to get started the whole idea of this build actually originally started in this thread here.
TL:DR It was going to be a case desk, the PC infused into the desk with a plexiglass top, and neat RGB lighting to see all your components, What I ended up going with was a much bulkier and stronger build, a 8' x 32" Behemoth of a desk, it took roughly a year for construction between working and finding the money to put into it and it's the piece I'm currently most proud of.

It all started with a pile of wood.

Once getting everything home, I Immediately started to lay out the wood on the ground to see the layout/order I wanted of the wood being used.

After Figuring out how I wanted the order of things to be in, I immediately began cutting material to size, and began the glue up of the center piece.

After the glue dried overnight, I started planing the piece down to be flat (or so I thought...)

Cut and glued the Legs together, and let them sit overnight to dry.

test fitting the legs on the desk.

After making sure the legs were good on the center piece, I began working on one of the side cabinets, I didn't take pictures during the build process but here's the unstained finished product.

Then here's how it looked once it was pushed into my room when I had been taking to long to produce this and needing a desk asap. (unstained)

Eventually I began applying stain to the behemoth.    Here's a better picture of the top.

Staining the right side cabinet.

A (so I thought) finished picture of the desk (also without the left cabinet even built yet).

Hey, I built that left one.

I wanted to see what polyurethane would look like on this, so I threw some on and loved it.

With the frustration of how uneven the stain was because all three parts were stained at different times i decided to completely sand off the polyurethane AND stain down to the bare pine, and then started restaining it, this first coat of a varathane Red oak was very light and the purpose was to actually darken the more absorbent spots in the wood to create a better effect with the red barn stain i was putting on after this.

Applied the Barn Red stain by Varathane and man, it made me nervous how bright it was since I was going for a darker cherry color.

I was honestly really happy with the way it came out after applying an oil based polyurethane (also varathane).

You'll notice the server rails are silver, and it looked gross and I had the intention already to paint them black so here's a before.

And here's the left railing finished.

And here's the fully finished product, (for now) I'd like to remake the desk top and make it span all three parts so that there's no gaps in the top, it would probably be more level as well.
