181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Caution for those using Dropbox on: April 13, 2011, 06:30:22 AM
There appears to be a number of people who use Dropbox or other similar service to backup their Bitcoin wallet.

The "Securing your wallet" wiki page ( http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet ) suggests that you might use a service like Dropbox for storing an encrypted archive that contains your wallet.

However, it appears many are using Dropbox to do a real-time backup of the (unencrypted) wallet.dat file.

There are risks to doing this.

A few days ago Dropbox was under the spotlight for having security issues.  Coverage by TNW (TheNextWeb) summarized their report with:
Quote
If you are worried about the security of your files generally, it would be advisable to not use Dropbox because files can be transferred to a computer you aren’t necessarily using.

Anyone with access to your unencrypted wallet.dat could grab that file and use it, immediately or at any time in the future to spend your bitcoins.

How might this happen?
- Does your Dropbox account use the same username (e-mail address) and password that you used with any other site or service?
- Do you have Dropbox installed on any other device using the same account?  Your wallet.dat will "sync" / be copied to each target.
- Are you using anything less than a "strong" password?

Here's a good article on Password Security:
  http://www.infosecisland.com/blogview/12645-Check-Your-Password-Security.html

Recently I learned of an instance where Dropbox was being used specifically to keep a single wallet.dat synchronized between two different installations of the bitcoin client.  The Bitcoin client was not designed to accommodate multiple installations like this, and using Dropbox in this manner will likely bring lost bitcoins or other grief sooner rather than later.  So that this message isn't overlooked, pardon me for "shouting":

*   PLEASE DO NOT USE DROPBOX TO SYNC YOUR WALLET BETWEEN COMPUTERS    *

185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Microtransaction industry moving forward on: March 29, 2011, 04:11:53 AM
A couple examples of microtransaction-based services:

Torrent Traveler:
You upload a torrent file and Torrent traveler will retrieve the download for you.  When the torrent download has completed, you then can pay $0.25 (per GB) to retrieve the download over the web:
  http://torrenttraveler.com/avpzaqvbpxgz4rukk3cgqoxvf

Here's an ebook, where chapters are sold individually, $0.25 USD each:
  http://project7alpha.com/2011/03/chapter-1/

Minno allows buyers to top up a wallet balance by charging to a credit card:
  https://www.minno.co/account#buy-credit

Minno is in closed beta right now but was featured on Tech Crunch:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/28/minno-hopes-theres-a-place-in-this-world-for-a-small-simple-e-wallet

Bitcoin already has two bitcoin-powered download services
  http://Ubitio.us.com and http://BitcoinService.co.uk
and shopping cart interfaces
  http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Shopping_Cart_Interfaces
to compete against minno, however the differences include:
  - immediacy  (There's no waiting for a block or two to confirm on minno before releasing the goods)
  - slick API / integration

There's no reason Minno couldn't accept bitcoins as a "funding" method.  There's really no reason why Torrent Traveler can't use using bitcoins directly.

PayPal competes with their PayPal/X microtransaction payment platform

It is great to see attention brought to microtransactions and the virtual goods industry.

It will be interesting to see where Bitcoins fits in these areas.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) will stop offering debit-card rewards for almost all of its customers in July

Quote
The Fed proposed capping debit-interchange fees at a flat 12 cents a transaction in December, compared with the current formula that averages 1.14 percent of the purchase price or about 44 cents.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-21/jpmorgan-will-cease-debit-card-rewards-program-because-of-proposed-fee-cap.html

PNC Bank and U.S. Bancorp also have rolled back some perks.

This will be beneficial for alternate payments, including Bitcoin, as the rewards were seen as one way that debit cards stood out over paying with cash or check.

190  Economy / Marketplace / Buy Liberty Reserve using Credit Card on: March 19, 2011, 06:43:25 AM
This is likely the most convoluted and expensive way to purchase Liberty Reserve (which can be used to purchase Bitcoins on the exchanges).

There is a phone verification step, so keep that in mind.
Quote
Go to www.AurumAge.com, register and follow these steps:

  • go to deposit money, choose Visa/Master/Spry and enter the desired amount to deposit;
  • then, at SpryPay website click “I agree to the terms” (and read them) checkbox and choose Visa/Master_Card (LiqPay) USD (or other currency)
  • then you will be redirected to LiqPay website where you need to finish the payment by specifying the card details
  • then, LiqPay notifies SpryPay about successful payment, and SpryPay notifies our system, and your casino account is credited accordingly.
  • Cashing out from this account is only possible to LibertyReserve, though, because SpryPay only allows to accept payments, not to send payments… and since there are no requirements to play games before you cashout this casino works as a great instant exchanger.

And there you are, deposit the money into AurumAge casino instantly and they will alow you to cashout to your Liberty Reserve account immediately. This is the fastest service you will get, however SpryPay will take some fee from you.

I'm thinking that a wallet.dat containing the generated bitcoins from a very old block, even if the bitcoins have since been spent, would be a candidate for preservation.

That's all long before I knew of Bitcoin, however.

As an aside,

I occasionally see numismatic value of bitcoins discussed.

There are thousands and thousands of early blocks whose generated 50 BTC have not been spent yet.  These will be interesting, because there's no way to tell if the wallet has been copied previously.  Its value will come from knowing how secure it was previously, especially if it has changed hands.

Are virgin bitcoins (generated but never spent) the equivalent of the "uncirculated" grade assessed a physical coin?

Here's a blog post from Dwolla, contrasting themselves against PayPal.

  http://www.dwolla.org/blog/dwolla-vs-paypal

Simply replacing the word Dwolla with Bitcoin makes a nice FAQ:

Why is DwollaBitcoin the best alternative to Paypal?

Bitcoin allows you to to receive payment directly from Bitcoin balances at an exceptionally low cost. A few nice applications are:

  • If your client selects to pay with Bitcoin, it won’t cost you a percentage based fee to get paid.
  • This allows you to get paid online for larger ticket items and services without losing a significant amount of money on the interchange.
  • You can now use electronic transactions where you could not previously.

Why should your business use Bitcoin?

  • There is a growing group of people using Bitcoin. It makes it easy to find new customers.
  • It doesn’t cost you anything if it goes unused.
  • There are no set up fees, monthly fees, or hidden costs.
  • It will allow you to receive payment for goods or services online even if you do not have a merchant account somewhere else.

The bottom line.

Bitcoin will never replace credit cards and it does not do the same thing Paypal does. Bitcoin is not a credit card/debit card system. However. We do represent a solution to merchants looking for other ways to accept payment electronically. If you want to aviod the interchange fee ( aka. swipe fee & credit card fees ) you can’t use credit or debit cards . You need to use a different service. That service is called Bitcoin.

If your company has not allowed electronic transactions to be used due to the swipe fee, Bitcoin finally gives you a solution. Even when sitting down to write a check keep this in mind. Using Bitcoin is less expensive than mailing a check, or driving it across town.

Of course, this will be a nice complement to the $100 maximum charge per debit card transaction:

196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How to prove that the sender for a payment was truly me? on: March 12, 2011, 07:49:14 PM
Let's say there is a scenario where I am one of two different people who claim to be responsible for sending bitcoins for a purchase.  How could I prove to the merchant that those bitcoins came from my wallet and nobody else's?

I was considering that I could sign a message using the address' private key, as described here,
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2373.40
however in my scenario, I assume the merchant is non-technical and that this purchase isn't significant enough to warrant climbing the PKI learning curve.

I then considered the ability to send another amount, say a token 0.01 BTC, from the same address that my earlier payment originated from.  Even if I were able to force bitcoin to use a specific address for the input for the transaction, that transaction would then be recognized as an attempt to double spend and thus wouldn't be honored or relayed by any nodes.

Are there any other options for this?

199  Other / Off-topic / Introducing WingCash, think Dwolla + Facebook, the anti-anonymous e-currency on: March 07, 2011, 06:45:34 AM
Yet another Person To Person payments system has emerged: WingCash
  http://wingcash.com

If Bitcoin is described as a decentralized, anonymous digital currency then WingCash is the polar opposite -- a centralized, fully public, representative currency.

How WingCash works:
  • WingCash "Notes" are issued in denominations matching physical U.S. coins ($0.01, $0.05, $0.10 and $0.25) and U.S. currency ($1, $5, $10, $20 and $100).
  • Each note is serialized, and can be viewed online.  The entire history of the note (the current owner and at least the last eight recent owners) is visible, publicly.
    Example: https://wingcash.com/usd/w002-53bd-a7ef-f3d5
When viewed online, the image presented on the note matches the denomination of its physical U.S. equivalent.  For example, the $0.10 Note will show the image of a U.S. dime, and the $50 Note will show the image of a U.S. $50 bill.
  • The owner of the note holds the cash online in a centralized ewallet account through WingCash.com.  The notes are backed with cash in a cash account held by the note's issuer -- either Wingcash or a bank partner (I presume this is in cash accounts that are fully FDIC insured funds, similar to how PayPal handles accountholder balances).
  • Transactions are irrevocable, which means there are no chargebacks if a transaction sours.
  • Selling WingCash (withdrawing funds / cashing out): Notes may be transferred at face value to your U.S. checking or savings account (via ACH).  WingCash charges $0.25 per withdrawal.  A merchant who accepts WingCash may also cash out your notes at face value without the fee.
  • Buying WingCash (adding funds): Notes may purchased only from participating retailers or by exchanging with an individual.
  • There are no transaction fees when using WingCash notes as payment with a merchant or between individuals.
  • Currently, registration for individuals is allowed only for certain states.  The three states, Montana, New Mexico and South Carolina are states in which WingCash can likely operate without registering as a money transmitter.  Dwolla followed a similar approach before going national last year.  Merchants from any state may register now.
  • Money may be sent to users on the social networks Twitter and Facebook.  If the recipient has already linked the social network account to WingCash, notes are transferred to the recipient's ewallet immediately.  Otherwise, the notes are claimed only after the recipient logs in and links (via OAUTH) the account.  There also is the ability to make transfers via email and LinkedIn but it isn't immediate.

It offers merchants the holy grail of irrevocable payment. This proposition is so compelling that merchants may actively seek to promote it as an alternative to most other forms of payment.

Quote
WingCash appears to be scalable and sustainable because they have eliminated the complexity and cost of charge-backs,

The CEO also founded ProPay, which is one of the few payment alternatives to PayPal on eBay.

WingCash adds to the crowded Person to Person payment networks, which include Paypal (credit and ACH), Dwolla (ACH), PopMoney (ACH), and a plethora of mobile money startups.

Incidentally, WingCash is not to be confused with the mobile cash system used in Cambodia called WING Cash Xpress:
