1  Economy / Collectibles / Return of the AUTOGRAPHS EDITION & OG coin maker Holograms collector sets! on: March 29, 2024, 12:21:18 PM
In observance of the upcoming 4th halving, it’s time to make something special.

BACKGROUND:
The Encyclopedia of Physical Bitcoins was first released in May 2016, with a print run of 100, 25 of which were designated the “signature edition” having been signed by Mike Caldwell (Casascius). That summer around the time of the 2nd halving, co-author Howard Kesselman (bithalo) collected autographs and hologram samples from over 30 coin makers featured in the book. When the Revised Edition of the Encyclopedia came out in early 2017, these were sold in 20 full sets with a matching book, making it the sought-after “Autographs Edition”, featuring the actual holograms and signatures of dozens of markers and selling for as much as $10,000.

WHAT:
There are leftovers that were set aside - until now!! With 5 sets of about 30 autographs and 18 holograms, there’s an opportunity to revive something old and also give newer collectors a chance at something truly historic.

IDEAS:
There are a few things I can do here:
Option 1: holograms and autographs added to books (hardcover or soft), affixed to the relevant pages. I could also add a special sticker of my own to each book, collected from various crypto events.
Option 2: creation of a framed/frame-able artwork(s) made of the signatures and autographs, possibly incorporating pieces/pages of the Encyclopedia as well, making it possible for one to display and enjoy all the holograms and signatures at once.

It’s of course possible to do both - such as 3x books and 2x artworks. Fair warning, I would probably want to keep one to myself Cheesy

2  Economy / Collectibles / 10 BTC Casascius up for auction on Stacks Bowers on: August 14, 2023, 05:40:43 PM
Looks like a 10 BTC coin is already pre-bidding at 250k on Stacks, set to go into live bidding on Friday which should be exciting to watch over YouTube.

https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/lots/view/3-13WSZN/2012-casascius-gold-b-10-bitcoin-loaded-firstbits-1agrpnvg-series-2-silver-specimen-68-pcgs

My thinking is that if this sells successfully, it will create some waves in the mainstream numismatics world because anything in the 6-figure range is serious business by practically any measure of the hobby, and its hard to dismiss a barely decade-old coin going for that type of sum. Bullish  Cool

4  Economy / Collectibles / [WTB] Casascius coins, especially graded ones on: February 17, 2021, 01:30:12 AM
In the past month I've been getting a large number of requests from outside collectors looking to acquire some Casascius coins, and many of them are specifically requesting graded ones. Brass 0.5 and 1.0 are the most requested.

This is an open invitation to send me PM's regarding graded coins that you have along with asking prices. You are also welcome to PM with ungraded ones, but note that success is less likely (though I do appreciate them). If you have several and you can offer quantity discounts, let me know.
Pics are appreciated but not required- but I will ask for them anyway in the sale process.

Thanks

6  Economy / Collectibles / Signed & numbered Finnish magazine with Casascius & BLOCKLAND article on: February 11, 2021, 05:06:18 PM
Suomen Kuvalehti (Finland's Picture Magazine) did a 4-page personality profile about me regarding physical bitcoins, BLOCKLAND, etc. for last weeks issue. It is in Finnish, obviously. For anyone interested in collecting that sort of thing, I'm happy to sign copies and send them your way.

The maximum I would do is 21, and I will keep a few of those in any case. $40 should cover the magazine and shipping, prob less if you are in EU. 1 per person.

7  Bitcoin / Project Development / New Book: 'BLOCKLAND: 21 Stories of Bitcoin, Blockchain, and Crypto-Currency' on: May 25, 2020, 11:32:57 PM
Pre-launch & Project development thread/blog

Presenting: BLOCKLAND: 21 Stories of Bitcoin, Blockchain, and Crypto-Currency

This book is an attempt to broadly tell the story: the origin, history, culture, legends, and anecdotes, of the entire cryptocurrency industry. The book’s ~400 pages, 145 sections, and 21 chapters examine different facets of the Bitcoin and blockchain phenomenon. Much of this includes the history and happenings of this very forum. The misfit innovators, the wild stories, the scams, and all the many things that are real yet read like fiction. There are over 200 characters and 500 citations. After a year of full-time writing and research, it is in the final pre-publishing stages. This is my life's work.

Over five years ago in 2015, I announced pre-orders on this forum for the Encyclopedia of Physical Bitcoin and Crypto-Currency, which explored the meaning behind the art and imagery of 'physical bitcoins' which originally served as gimmicks to help people understand Bitcoin.

Project Status:
The book itself is done. It is now on the 3rd round of copy-editing.
Yesterday I added the Introduction and Table of Contents to my website www.cryptonumist.com/blockland
The cover design will be released shortly
I'm about halfway through the process of contacting/trying to contact 200 people who are mentioned in the book, so they can point out errors
I'm 1/3rd done with properly formatting ~500 citations

BLOCKLAND will be going on sale soon. Shipping is anticipated in late July.

8  Economy / Collectibles / In Print: 'BLOCKLAND: 21 Stories of Bitcoin, Blockchain, and Crypto-Currency' on: May 20, 2020, 09:16:14 PM
Well, Pre-launch.

[drumroll]

Presenting: BLOCKLAND: 21 Stories of Bitcoin, Blockchain, and Crypto-Currency

Author Bio, Table of Contents, and Introduction available at www.cryptonumist.com/blockland

This book is an attempt to broadly tell the story: the origin, history, culture, legends, and anecdotes, of the entire cryptocurrency industry. The book’s 400 pages, 145 sections, and 21 chapters examine different facets of the blockchain phenomenon.

Over five years ago in 2015, I announced pre-orders on this forum for the Encyclopedia of Physical Bitcoin and Crypto-Currency, my first book. This consisted of 100 numbered ‘First Print Edition’ books, which helped me cover the expenses to bring the book to reality. The next year an additional 20 ‘Signature Edition’ hardcovers were sold.

Its time to renew the tradition.

In keeping with tradition, I am making available some ‘First Print Edition II’ hardcover books. They will be individually numbered and digitally signed. My intention is to ship these out several weeks before the official launch of the book. It is likely that this ‘pre-publish’ edition will be slightly different (and thus unique) than the final mass-market product.

Anticipated shipping date: July

Watch this thread for updates.

9  Economy / Collectibles / 3x Leveraged Physical Coins on: February 15, 2020, 01:32:33 AM
Ok, these don't exist yet.. but, Binance recently listed ERC-20 tokens that are effectively leveraged positions in BTC, ETH, XRP, or EOS. This means that for every 1%, 10%, and 100% that a coin goes up, these tokens will increase in value by 3%, 30%, and 300%. Effectively they are like a margin position, but with everything 'built-in'.

So because funded physical coins are effectively used as long-term cold storage, I think that embedding some with these long positions is an exciting, even extraordinary idea.

So compare;
A funded BTC1 coin ... if BTC goes from 10k to 20k, the coin is worth BTC1 and thus $20,000 (+100%).
A funded 0.05 BULL coin ($1000 / 0.1 BTC will buy you about 0.05 BULL today), if BTC goes up 100% to 20k, will be worth $40,000 (+300%).

Pretty wild! And similar coins can be made for ETH, EOS, and XRP.

Who wants an Infinity Coin with a BULL private key?  Wink   That said, This probably calls for a new series entirely; maybe even a fancy 'stock certificate' type. I think this is the start of something very interesting. Feel free to PM if you have ideas.
Thoughts?
10  Economy / Collectibles / INFINITY Silver Bitcoin about to launch.. and NEW BOOK ON THE WAY on: February 14, 2019, 08:03:38 PM
Many have asked me when I'll release a coin.
I came close two years ago, but it turned out that the highly unique design was outside of the mint's capability.
I felt strongly that if I'm to release a coin, then it would need to be something special.
That coin has now arrived.

SEE GIF 1 HERE >> https://imgflip.com/gif/2v1mox
SEE GIF 2 HERE >> https://imgflip.com/gif/2v1mx8

I present to you the Infinity Bitcoin, produced by the Physical Bitcoin (PB) Mint.
PB Mint is a collaboration between me and a partner who has access to cutting edge hologram technology.

100 limited edition (plus 10 'demo coins' made)

Background:
Basically, I found that there are plenty of coins with a traditional hologram out there, and this piece is meant to be more conceptual than useful. It's not really made to fit into the mold of the existing & established market, but rather to challenge and parody it by taking the very basic elements (B, year/mint/very generic circuit board/private key) and combining them into something unique. Naturally, not everyone will like that.

Casascius coins were created to make blockchain/cryptocurrency feel like normal money.
This coin was created to make 'normal money' feel like blockchain/cryptocurrency.

The INFINITY hologram symbolizes how blockchain goes on forever, is interconnected, and is mindboggling , difficult to comprehend, and virtually impossible to falsify.
It is then this interconnected jumble of never-ending, hard-to-understand connections that both 'protect' and 'conceal' value, with both the silver (physical) and private key (digital) representing that concept of value. This value is then encased between 2 sets of this 'protective layer'.

Instead of an image, this coin attempts to convey a concept. Most people who display a coin consider the hologram 'secondary' and display only the main 'image'. This is impossible with this coin since the hologram IS the image; the focus is the concept of the blockchain/tech, not the concept of coins/money.

Casascius coins were primarily coins; the hologram was added as a 'necessary' security feature to the coin.
This 'coin' is built around the hologram; the coin was added as a 'necessary' platform to host and affix it.

---------------

This sale also marks my first public announcement of a project I'm currently working on; a new book:
21 Stories: A Decade in Bitcoin
The book will have 21 chapters, with each looking at the blockchain ecosystem & phenomenon from an entirely different angle.
The aim is to unite all these angles into one cohesive piece. One of these chapters is about crypto art, and physical coins are of course included!
The book is 25%-33% done.

UPDATE: Teaser video will be posted on twitter https://twitter.com/elias_ahonen on SATURDAY. Please follow me  Cheesy

UPDATE 2: Taking a few 'teaser' orders @ $150. PM me. Those who already messaged me earlier don't need to do so again to get this.
-------> 'Teaser' sales ended. Will open to more later.

Shipping (and sealing) of coins is being done by minerjones. Shipping charges are extra and will be arranged with him.

12  Economy / Collectibles / [AUCTION] One-of-a-kind Encyclopedia has traveled to 26 countries! 3 DAY AUCTION on: October 13, 2018, 01:13:41 AM
Alright guys, I've got something special from the vault today.

What we have here is one of the original paperback editions of the encyclopedia. It was one of the ~110 copies in the initial batch, 100 of which were designated as 'first print'. This specific book went with me as I traveled the world for about 1.5 years in 2016-2017. It's seen a lot and has been browsed by people from all walks of life around the world from; from impoverished schoolchildren I tutored in South Africa to Chinese billionaires. It was with me in a dug-out wood canoe in Botswana's Okavango Delta when I was chased by a charging hippo, and has been passed around in bars across Southeast Asia as I backpacked there. It was even featured in Chinese media after being the star of a book talk I was invited to in Nanjing.

Now, I have recorded all the countries the book has been in behind the front cover. I've also attached a 'globe' hologram to the front, making it unique among my books. it is of course signed. It's time I give the collectors here a chance to own this truly unique piece.
The book's condition is FAR from mint, so you can browse it without worry. I would invite the buyer to take it on further travels and record them where I left off.. another 10-11 countries will fill up the page!

20  Economy / Scam Accusations / SCAM WARNING on: May 28, 2017, 07:48:17 AM
I received this PM yesterday:

It has what looks like a BCT link, but when you hover over it you see that it really opens in a different domain (as seen on bottom left). I checked it on my smartphone, and it turns out to be a page that looks identical to the BCT login page, with your name already in the field.. all you need to do is write in your password and click 'login'.

You have been warned.
