It has long been considered a best practice for networked machines to have good time. A lot of effort has been put into this area. One of the results of this has been the Network Time Protocol, and freely available software to implement it. I have always thought that every networked computer capable of running ntp should. I think good timekeeping and ECC memory are both surprisingly under demanded.
In the *coin world, it would allow for the timestamp tolerances to be tightened up, and be made more accurate. They would no longer need to be allowed to slide backwards. Some coins, such as i0coin, have put an ntpdate like implementation into themselves. This is a band-aid fix compared to what running a proper ntpd can do, and it costs more resources to run. It also is not scalable, every running *coin or time sensitive program should not be adding to the load on the time servers.
So I am curious, do you run ntp? If not, why not? Would you run ntp if a new chain required it, assuming that you would have run it if it did not? If not, why not?

I have been seeing this message a lot the past couple of weeks. bitcoin also no longer works well when I tell it to store all the data files on my NAS as I like to do from my laptops.
What the heck changed to make the latest bitcoin so flakey with the block store now? Never had these issues for a couple of years till recently.

What reason do the exchanges have for posting "It appears that the NMC blockchain has been forked." a day after the few rogue pools that patched their client to start merged mining had abandoned that effort. The fork was for around 10 blocks and was not going to be accepted by anyone running a client downloaded from dot-bit.org or built from the sources linked to from the namecoin projects web site. Why make this fork that no other clients accepted seem any more significant then if I patched namecoin and ran it on a few dozen machines myself. That could happen at any time as well. It would have as little meaning as this flawed idea of an attack defense did.

I want to get a new computer to run bitcoin and use for some mmo gaming. I like to try and get ecc ram, but I don' t think the recommended builds I have been seeing here are use ecc ram. Does anyone know some decent motherboards that support ecc these days?
