3  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / What address displays when you send a coin? on: June 08, 2011, 12:51:44 PM
Sorry if this has been answered before, I did search and couldn't find a straight answer.

Basically, using a tool such as blockexplorer.com I was trying to figure out what address or identifying information is displayed in a send transaction.  I know it doesn't show up in the Bitcoin client, but I do remember reading that some kind of information is in the publicly viewable block chain, using a tool like blockexplorer.  So for instance I sent 1BTC to an exchanger earlier.. which address shows as being the 'sender' address in the public block chain?  That's my 1st question.. the next question is, can we choose/create a new sending address for each send transaction?
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What happens if I use an old wallet.dat ? on: May 11, 2011, 05:43:17 PM
Hello everyone I was wondering if anyone had any info on this topic.. basically I'm travelling and before my travels I backed up my wallet.dat file, like a couple weeks ago, onto a memory card.  I installed bitcoin onto a laptop I'm using now and replaced the file with my backed up one.  Problem is, I just realized that I must have performed one or two other transactions (a debit, and a credit) *after* that backup.. I can tell my balance is off, and I don't see the latest transactions show up.  So my question is - can I still send money (for instance to an exchanger) and have no problems, and everything will go back to normal when I get a hold of my more up to date wallet.dat?  Or will it screw things up if I try and use this backed up wallet.dat that's missing a couple transactions?

Thank you...
5  Economy / Marketplace / Will accept Bitcoin as payment, in exchange for IT services, or managed trading on: June 22, 2010, 08:22:16 PM
Hello all - this is a bit of an experiment for me, being that Bitcoin is so new and all.  To attempt to contribute to the Bitcoin ecosystem, specifically to further the perception & acceptance that Bitcoin is 'money' - I have decided to offer some services for which I'll accept Bitcoin as the method of payment.

Specifically:

  • IT Services - a lot of you may be programmers or other uber-techies.... However  my offer of service is not for programming but for more basic things... troubleshooting some software issue, configuring your network [assuming at least your Internet connection works so I can remotely access], other consultations.. I can't do everything but we can try, and if you're satisfied, you pay me Bitcoin.  I will likely use some remote access software which you would control, in order for me to configure/troubleshoot whatever your problem is
  • Managed trading - I make my living trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, I specialize in derivatives trading.  Though I cannot guarantee any results, if anyone wants to diversify some of their money into something that can allow your money to grow, you could try with me if you'd like. If we can come to an agreement and you are satisfied, you could pay me with Bitcoin.

I'll add any other services I could provide as they come to my mind, but for now these are the two fields that a) I have professional experience in b) could probably be valuable to someone out there, and c) I can do remotely, in other words for anyone, anywhere in the world, thanks to the Internet.

If you are interested in either of these services I can provide, just contact me privately and we can discuss matters further.  If we can agree and make an exchange, great.  If not - at least you've made a new Bitcoin contact/buddy!  Smiley

6  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / 100% CPU Usage for Coin Generation? on: June 10, 2010, 11:08:05 PM
Hello.. I was wondering if you guys knew if having your CPU running at 100% usage while generating coins is normal?  On an older Pentium M 1.7ghz w/ 1gb ram... also on a newer Core 2 Duo, 2.2Ghz w/ 2gbs of ram... I thought that the software is only supposed to use idle time?
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Status / unconfirmed on: June 09, 2010, 03:56:42 PM
Why does the 'unconfirmed' status disappear after 6 blocks are generated after a new transaction?
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Multiple BitCoin clients on same public IP (same household) questions on: June 08, 2010, 05:24:30 PM
As per subject, I'm wondering if the generation of bitcoins would be affected if I had multiple computers, each running their own BC client, all in one household and therefore sharing the same public IP address?  Would the BitCoin 'system' treat these clients almost as if they were a single node, thus distributing new bitcoin generation amongst the various computers in my household, or will each one be treated quite the same in this regard, regardless of the fact that they are all displaying the same public IP to the rest of the worldwide nodes?

Edit: So to be more specific, what I'm wondering is - if hypothetically it takes me one week with one computer to generate 100 bitcoins, would having 10 computers in my household (sharing the same public IP) generate a combined total of roughly 10 x 100 = 1000 bitcoins, or would the result be 100 bitcoins divided roughly equally amongst the 10 computers?
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Noob question on: June 07, 2010, 03:28:02 PM
Hello all - I am new to BitCoin.. I have read through the BitCoin FAQ, I have a basic idea of how the system works.. the only issue I'm having at the moment is that my computer is not creating any coins.  I even let the computer run for an entire day, without a single bitcoin being issued.  From what I read on some other posts it seems that some users are mentioning that the amount of BC$ being generated are less than in the good ole days, but still...  is it possible my client cannot create a single coin?  My computer is a bit old but I'm not sure that it's old to the point that it cannot create a bitcoin after an entire day of letting the CPU blast at 100% cpu usage and do nothing else, just letting the BitCoin client run.  Specs are : 2.8ghz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM.. and yes I have the latest Bitcoin installed - whatever is on the home page.

Anyone have an idea what I could be doing wrong?  Mind you I'm not a programmer/developer, I'm just a digital currency enthusiast & early adopter trying to figure this thing out.
