Cryptocurrency Education Week

As part of Financial Literacy Month in the United States, DNotesEDU will be hosting Cryptocurrency Education Week from April 8th - 14th, 2018.

The goal is to raise awareness of the need for free, accurate, and unbiased introductory educational material on cryptocurrency. To achieve mainsteam adoption there needs to be a strong focus on investor protection, and while cryptocurrency education is the key to accomplishing this, it is also a favorite bait of fraudsters and their schemes. Quality educational material is honest about the risks involved, and does not make specific coin or token recommendations. There is no reference to anything that sounds like guaranteed high returns, earn $millions, hot tips, secrets that you have to pay for, or any other too-good-to-be-true claims. Educational material should be inclusive and empowering - it should teach you how to make decisions for yourself.

Contests and giveaways

During the week, we will be giving away DNotes digital currency to random lucky winners that have been sharing DNotesEDU cryptocurrency educational material on social media.
Make sure your posts contain #CryptocurrencyEducationWeek  @DNotesEDU so we can find you when searching.
Keep an eye out for additional contests and random, instant giveaways held throughout the week that will be announced on Facebook and Twitter.
At the end of the week, every eligible post has a chance to win a Grand Prize Draw of 5,000 DNotes, plus numerous runner-up prizes!

Financial Literacy Needs to Include Knowledge on Cryptocurrency

We are rapidly moving toward a digital world, and while it may be some time before artificial intelligence is cleaning your bathroom, digital money is already knocking on the door. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are starting to make the push into the current financial system, and without some basic ‘money education’, a lot of people will fall behind even further – not just financially, but also in terms of opportunity.

April is Financial Literacy Month in the United States, and a good time to bring awareness of the need for accurate, beginner-level educational material on cryptocurrency. The level of misinformation and deceptive, if not fraudulent promotion is more than just a little disturbing. Equally disturbing in the world of cryptocurrency and initial coin offerings (ICO), is the number of people believing everything they hear or read because they lack subject knowledge. They believe the media, they believe the guy at work, and worst of all, they believe it’s possible to earn 30% per month because that’s what the ad said.

3  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-04-05] Op-Ed: We Need Crypto Security Before Simplicity on: April 07, 2018, 04:09:28 PM

Op-Ed: We Need Crypto Security Before Simplicity

In recent years, cryptocurrencies have become almost ubiquitous in the mainstream media. Many media outlets now have reporters or entire sections of their websites devoted to covering digital currency, the blockchain, and other FinTech innovations. Despite that increased attention, however, those digital currencies continue to be difficult to use and hard to access for most average citizens – and that’s a problem.

In fact, this is proving to be one of the biggest obstacles to gaining mass acceptance and adoption of digital currency by the public. There are several reasons for this obstacle, of course – most notably, that there is no straightforward, frictionless bridge connecting digital currency to the world of finance and commerce. Where those connections for exist, they tend to involve multiple third parties that can get in the way between you and your capital.

Of course, there’s another concern that needs to be addressed as well: security. Yes, you want a monetary system that is easy to access, understand, and use. But you also need a system that keeps your money secure. Without that security, it doesn’t matter how simple and accessible your money may be. Unfortunately, many would-be crypto users remain leery of the technology’s underlying security, and that deters them from exploring digital currency’s benefits.

Sadly, those concerns are not always without merit.

Why Coin Age Matters in Cryptocurrency

When most people hear about the 1600 cryptocurrencies and ICO tokens listed on CoinMarketCap, they assume that number includes every one ever launched. This assumption may come after they scroll down to the end and notice hundreds that have no marketcap and/or no volume. The bottom of the list is often referred to the graveyard – a place where abandoned coins go to die. The real graveyard however, is wherever they go after they are removed from the listing. At least while they are on CoinMarketcap, for better or (usually) worse, there is a marker of their demise.

CoinMarketCap routinely removes coins from their site that are no longer active or have no exchange to trade on. A list of 1250+ cryptocurrencies launched to date was compiled by CryptoDatabase in March 2015, and posted on Bitcointalk [1]. However, according to this Historical Snapshot on CoinMarketcap, they had only 525 currencies listed on March 22, 2015. Delisted coins could account for some of this difference, but there are likely other factors such as those that never met the criteria to get listed in the first place.

A more current complete listing is provided by Coinranking[2], showing there has been at least 3,073 coins launched. The last 32 pages are dead coins with a marketcap of $0. It still doesn’t include every coin that has been released or at least attempted to do so. There is a long list of shady projects where the funds raised disappeared early enough that they may not be listed anywhere. Bitcointalk is littered with eager-beaver attempts to start a new cryptocurrency that never make it past a few posts or pages.

Op-Ed: Without Crypto, Your Money Doesn’t Exist

If you’re like most people and you one day plan to retire, then you’ll need to think about saving and investing to replace the earnings that you’ll no longer get from employment. It is natural for humans to look to the future to work out what action they need to take today to ensure a better future, but too often a lack of information about the world around us distorts these calls to action. And while we may sometimes be ignorant of economic reality, economic reality doesn’t ignore us when things go belly-up.

Healthy economies should be based on sound money for fairness and long-term viability. Sound money is the idea that the integrity of your money’s value is maintained over time — that any attempt to deface or counterfeit money should be easy to detect, and that no person or group will have the ability to produce more legal tender for their own use. Today’s fiat monetary system doesn’t meet the requirements of sound money, and leads to decreased economic stability, and at worst, collapse.

8  Other / Beginners & Help / Cryptocurrency & ICO Screening Guide For Investors on: March 20, 2018, 07:21:45 PM

DNotesEDU has written the Cryptocurrency & ICO Screening Guide for Investors to help reduce the risk of loss and/or fraud when choosing which currency or token to invest in.

This guide is for those who are interested in investing in cryptocurrencies or ICO tokens, understand that it is high risk, but have no idea what to look for in the 1500 coins and tokens available. It is not intended as financial or investment advice, and does not make any specific recommendations. Its purpose is to give you an idea on what information you need to find, where to find it, what it may mean, and potential questions you need to get answers for. It is not a set of rigid rules, and there are always exceptions, but if a coin you are researching has too many red flags, you may want to look elsewhere.

This guide isn’t based on proven investment theory, rather it is an observation based compilation of what we have witnessed within the industry over the last 4+ years. Think of this as some of the missing parts to the standard advice of “do your own research”. Never accept a buy recommendation from anyone at face value – educate yourself, and always make your own decisions.

First of all, are you investing or gambling? If all you are looking for is to actively trade the wild volatility, or to gamble that there will be a greater fool than you willing to buy a bag of hot air off of you, this guide doesn’t apply. If you are worried about being that ‘greater fool’ yourself, then you should definitely read this guide.

Investing in cryptocurrency is different than investing in the shares of a company. Honest cryptocurrencies have a different distribution method and philosophy. They should have been both fairly and widely distributed at launch and beyond, through mining, giveaways, bounties, contests, etc. They have been built by a community of people that believe in the project, with the door open to anyone wanting to join and help with the success of the project.

You can read the guide here - https://dnotesedu.com/2018/02/cryptocurrency-ico-screening-guide-for-investors/

Release Notes

DNotes 2.0 Pre-Release Alpha
This pre-release is an open alpha for individuals to test out features of the upcoming DNotes 2.0 release. This network and all associated address balances will be wiped before the final DNotes 2.0 production release. The dnotes-qt.exe executable available with this pre-release should work on most modern Windows operating systems.

New Features for DNotes 2.0
Switch from Proof Of Work to Proof Of Stake with ~2% annual staking reward.
Updated transaction fees to be destroyed.
Added display of DNotes and Wallet value in USD (based on coinmarketcap's API).
Added DNotes news feeds.
Added invoice number support for sending NOTE to an address. The format to specify an invoice number when sending to an address is (address)+(invoice number).
Added CRISP payouts for keeping NOTE Balance in the same address for a period of time. For the alpha release network, the payouts happen approximately every day. The first payout block is 1500 and additional payouts happen every 1440 blocks. The final production release will payout approximately every month instead.

Post your DNotes 2.0 pre-alpha address here or send an email to contact@dnotescoin.com, and we will send you some coins.

Regression Testing
For those of you that are familiar with running console commands, if you would like to participate in regression testing, please use this form:
https://goo.gl/forms/uBpPxgmPs2tWetBG3

Invoice Number
This is the first step in the implementation of the automated invoicing system, allowing you to add an invoice number to a transaction.
You may attach an invoice number after the address by adding a plus sign after the address, followed by the invoice number.

Example:
Address = ScsZXeo2PeLzNPVcjHdtkjQX5zY6phjTEm
Invoice Number = 1kH98asd9Hb3U8aksdnJNgs7923nasdj
Send Payment to = ScsZXeo2PeLzNPVcjHdtkjQX5zY6phjTEm+1kH98asd9Hb3U8aksdnJNgs7923nasdj
The client will recognize the difference between the address and invoice number and store them on the blockchain accordingly.

Scenario you can test:
Send a payment to an address with a random invoice number attached as the example above outlines.
Verify in your transactions that the invoice number was attached.
You should also be able to verify this independently from any node by getting the transaction id, going to the console (help > debug window > console), and typing gettransaction <transaction id>

Example:
Address = ScsZXeo2PeLzNPVcjHdtkjQX5zY6phjTEm
Invoice Number = 1kH98asd9Hb3U8aksdnJNgs7923nasdj
Transaction id = 2e56d470d068a89d51bf20f83c25622d7d5dc16f9a0b7763d3e6940733d4d791-000
gettransaction 2e56d470d068a89d51bf20f83c25622d7d5dc16f9a0b7763d3e6940733d4d791-000
Look for: "invoiceNumber" : "1kH98asd9Hb3U8aksdnJNgs7923nasdj"
And verify it matches your invoice number.

Note: Our block explorers will look for invoice numbers and have an API to call from invoice number. We may implement a RPC call for it as well. This will allow anyone to independently verify a address and invoice number from anywhere.

Staking
If you are familiar with the staking process, there are no significant changes.
1 minute block times.
Block reward is 2% of total coins in circulation, divide by the number of blocks in a year.
How much you actually earn will depend on how many coins people are currently staking.
Weighted against the network.

Block Reward Example:
Number of Coins = 130,000,000
2% of 130,000,000 = 2,600,000
Number of blocks in a year = 525,600
Block reward: 2,600,000 / 525,600 = 4.94672754...
The block reward will change every block.

Note: You will experience blocks that are staked and then later rejected.

How to stake:
Setup and staking video:
https://youtu.be/2w9r2LoXM6c
Open your wallet - Open dnotes-qt.exe
Encrypt your wallet - Settings > Encrypt Wallet > Enter password > Enter Password Again > Click ok > Click ok > wallet will close. Re-open wallet.
Make sure you have coins in your wallet and they are confirmed and mature.
Unlock your wallet - Settings > Unlock Wallet > Enter password > Click ok.
In the lower left the lock should be unlocked and the up arrow should be green. You will now be staking. You can hover your mouse over the lock and the up arrow to see the status.

CRISP
CRISP reward will be 0.5% every 1440 blocks (1 day for pre-release, but it will be 1 month for actual release). This will occur automatically.

Note:
All coins must remain in the same address for the entire period.
If you deposit at 1441, you will not receive CRISP reward at block 2880, your first CRISP reward would be block 4320.

Scenarios to test:
If you received CRISP reward with an online wallet.
If you received CRISP reward with an online and staking wallet.
If you received CRISP reward with an offline wallet.

The ICO Conundrum: A Challenge Beyond the SEC Mandate

Initial coin offerings have been in the news quite a bit in recent months, as blockchain and digital currency startups have become increasingly reliant on them for their capital formation needs. By some estimates, more than 4 billion dollars in capital have been raised using this funding mechanism. The fact is that ICOs have become an increasingly popular option for raising capital. However, that popularity has been accompanied by increased government scrutiny.

Yes, ICOs are a controversial funding option. And that leaves the cryptocurrency industry with a conundrum that must be addressed – and soon. With regulators turning a watchful eye to these initial coin offerings, wisdom behooves each of us to ask that most basic of questions: are ICOs a good or bad thing for our businesses?

The World’s Reaction to ICOs

Though the world’s governments were slow to react to this sudden explosion in the use of ICOs, they have started to take notice – and that has meant new challenges for...
