1  Bitcoin / Mining support / BFL Little Single - CGMiner Errors on: August 10, 2013, 06:56:19 PM
Hey folks,

My long-delayed BFL Little Single just arrived and I excitedly opened it up only to find a plethora of errors when trying to mine it with CGMiner. It currently recognizes the device as both "BFL0" and "BFL4" in error messages. Error messages range from "Comms error" to "Error: send work reports" to "Garbled response probably throttling, clearing buffer" and more. The temperature of the device is often listed at 28 degrees, but it is never shown mining (while my GPUs are)

I initially had an issue with driver recognition (Win7) which was ultimately solved by doing a windows search for drivers fix... Any fellow BFL "customers" (venture capital investors) have any tips?

Thanks.
2  Other / Off-topic / Question for BFL - "Little SCs" Jalapenos and Preorders on: October 01, 2012, 05:07:18 PM
BFL, in light of the recent announcement of bumped specs and a new product prior to launch, I have a couple questions:

1) Is the "Little SC" going to be ready and shipped at launch on the same timeline as the original Jal/SC/Rig lineup?

2) If so, are you offering any "order upgrades" to folks, such as myself, who pre-ordered multiple jalapenos but would rather upgrade to a Little SC given Jal's performance bump being moderately lower?

3) Would such an upgrade impact one's place in pre-order shipments?

Many thanks in advance, and shame me with a link if this has already been answered elsewhere.
3  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / ASUS 7970 Models -- Which is best for mining? on: August 04, 2012, 08:40:57 PM
I just bought a non-reference ASUS 7970 DirectCU II card (non-factory overclocked) for under $400 and I felt it was a decent mining catch until I started looking at more reviews...

Apparently, these cards are very difficult to overclock at all with the voltage factory locked. I'm a layman when it comes to mining (I fire up Sapphire Trixx and go), so I'm wondering if anyone has an enlightened opinion on whether the DirectCU II is worth it for mining or whether the TOP version (factory overclocked) would be better? Perhaps these cards are simply not the best 7970s for mining?

Thanks.
4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / PCI to PCIE Bridge Adapter on: September 22, 2011, 08:24:11 AM
I have an extra card and am out of PCIE slots at the moment and have been considering using an adapter with a regular PCI slot. I know a lot of people use risers but I'm wondering if this PCI -> PCI-E bridge adapter would do the job: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-PCI-Express-PCI-e-Bridge-Adapter-/390347855513?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae28b9699

I am cautious because the $20 price point seems a lot cheaper than what I'm used to. Also, do these have any trouble powering a 58xx series card on AMD s939 MBs?
5  Bitcoin / Mining / Open Rigs And Shower Steam: 1-10 Hazard Scale? on: September 21, 2011, 05:49:07 PM
So I have all the components needed to set up one more rig in my tiny apartment but the only place left to do so is a couple small feet next to my shower... It's on a wall in another room but there is no door separating them and steam will clearly get inside. I'm obviously aware of steam not being the greatest friend of computer components, let alone those in an open rig, but I'm wondering if those who have taken/considered similarly stupid risks have any thoughts.

On the hazard scale of 1-10, where does this fit in? My assumption is 7ish yet I'm still tempted..
6  Other / Off-topic / Social Media, Diaspora, Anon+ on: July 23, 2011, 08:08:14 PM
I'm quite sick of centralized social networking services mining every detail of our personal lives and I have a strange feeling I'm in good company on these boards. Statists, when pondering this issue, tend to call for regulatory cartels to "protect our privacy," yet forget that this would be in utter opposition to the interests of the state. Short of adopting an "unplugged" lifestyle, I tend to believe the answer lies in decentralized social networks with locally-stored accounts rather than centralized clouds. My question, then, is when are we going to see such a service and how could it be best implemented?

I am far from learned on this subject but I have been waiting on Disapora to get a beta launch going and am starting to assume this will simply come too late to be relevant. Anonymous has supposedly claimed it is now working on an "Anon+" service running on a torrent-like anonymous model, but again I wonder how legitimate this will be at the end of the day and whether states will crack down on such a service following inevitable illegal activity on it.

Any thoughts on the future of decentralized networking?
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What do ex-Soviets and Austin TX Residents Have in Common? on: July 22, 2011, 07:59:40 AM
They're really, really interested in Bitcoin: https://www.google.com/trends?q=bitcoin&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=0

I imagine this has been discussed before but what is the speculation on Russian interest and what it could mean for the market? Austin doesn't really come as much of a surprise.
8  Bitcoin / Mining support / 5830 Cards OC'd, GUI and Display Errors on: July 20, 2011, 05:25:46 AM
I currently have two 5830s blazing at 980Mhz each and their heat has peaked at 76C on the hottest day of the summer thus far. Despite the relatively low heat, I am getting a number of GUI and Display errors while mining. The GUI errors involve skewed text/pics and random "bits" appearing on the screen while the display error tends to freeze my cursor and cause the screen to go black until I am informed that a driver error was resolved.

I'm wondering if I am pushing these cards too hard despite the low temps or whether this is simply the result of a faulty card or software error. I am in Win7 and this is not a dedicated rig, for the record.

Thanks in advance.
9  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Second PSU Set, GPU Core Clocks Stuck at 157MHz on: July 16, 2011, 04:30:41 AM
So I set up a second PSU to power my two 5830s and while my computer is running without issue I now cannot seem to get my GPU core clocks above 157 MHz which obviously isn't so ideal for mining. The PSU I am using to power these cards is a more than adequate Corsair 850W so I doubt it is a hardware defect (unless this is a lemon). Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Also, I'm not sure if this is a random bug but since setting up the second PSU I have not been able to open GUIMiner. It simply opens to the taskbar but will not pull up in Windows...Perhaps because of the incredibly low core clocks?
10  Bitcoin / Mining / Fan Speed vs Heat on: July 15, 2011, 06:58:22 PM
I'm wondering whether one should go for higher fan speed or higher heat in trying to get the longest life span out of a miner. I currently have two 5830s running at 67C with fans at 76% and I'm wondering if it's better to run the fan harder or let the cards go a little hotter... Any opinions?
11  Bitcoin / Mining / Catalyst 11.7 on: July 15, 2011, 03:03:42 AM
Hey folks,

I have been told that Catalyst 11.7 will end the need for dummy plugged video cards in Win7. Is anyone aware of whether or not this is the case? Also, I checked AMD's driver page and can only find 11.6 available for download at the moment, does anyone have an ETA on release or even if the beta is reasonably stable? I have a 5830 sitting here collecting dust due to lack of a dummy plug atm..

Thanks in advance.
12  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5830 vs 6870 on: June 20, 2011, 04:44:56 AM
I'm seeking opinions on 5830 versus 6870 cards. Both fall in my price range and their intro hash rate on the hardware comparison are quite similar (244 for the 5830, 232 for the 6870). The 5830s also seem to have more OC ability due to a lower clock speed but I have been told that the 6xxx series runs somewhat cooler and wonder if this would make a significant difference between these cards.

There is a HIS 6870 on Newegg for $159 after MIR right now which doesn't seem terrible. The 5830 is OOS pretty much everywhere at the moment but magically returns for brief periods of time (usually for $119). Still, if anyone has some knowledge on how these cards stack up with regards to heat, hash, crossfire performance and so on it would be appreciated.
