I volunteer regularly at my local Humane Society and noticed that on some of the kennels, they have a "sponsored by" sign. Basically the sponsor covers all of the food and general care for the animal in that particular kennel for the year. I'm throwing around the idea of starting a crowdfunding project to get as many "Sponsored by Bitcoin" kennels as I can. I think it would be pretty cool to see a whole row of them, it certainly would catch the public eye as they're rather prominent (right on the front of the door which is chain link). If I can get it up and running, I would take regular pictures of the dogs, give their backgrounds, etc., and of course pictures of the Bitcoin signs. I've done some preliminary talks with the Humane Society and they are receptive to the idea. I'm not sure of the exact cost of sponsorship but from talking with them it sounds like it will be roughly $1500 per annum per kennel, which I think is a pretty good deal for some prominent advertising. Lets face it, a lot of us have made a lot of money from Bitcoin and I think it would be a cool way to give back, promote Bitcoin in a positive way, and at the same time support a local shelter. The main obstacles I can see is 1) would people be willing to donate and 2) would people be willing to trust me. I really have no idea about #1 but I think if I promote it enough, people will donate. The main issue is #2, and that's trust. I've been a member of the forums since 2011 but I recognize this doesn't hold a great deal of weight (although it's better than a newbie trying to start the project). I need some ideas on what would be the best way to make this as transparent as possible. Some ideas: - Upfront the money myself and get the first sponsorship in place. From there I can start taking pictures, etc., and there's tangible proof. The major risk being the project doesn't take off at all and I'm stuck with the bill.
- Set up a "good faith" deposit with a trusted escrow on the forums (John K. or someone willing) so in the event I don't pull through with my promise, the escrow can release the funds to those who donated to help recoup their losses.
- Have all of the money flow through an escrow and once it reaches the goal amount ($1500 or whatever it will be), have the escrow release the funds to me. Escrow will have all of my contact information and fully vet me in whatever way he/she sees fit.
Can anyone think of any better options? I could use some help. I plan on taking no fees or anything like that, 100% of the donations would go to the promotion of Bitcoin and the Humane Society. Thanks for taking the time to read. Hit me up here or via PM. |

Testing to see if there's interest. Account has a Level 70 Monk and Ranger. Initially I was going to do this via PM to TF but I think it's relevant to all users of CoinLenders so I decided to start a thread. I noticed that there are some changes to the website, for instance, interest is now called "fee rebates." I understand some of this is more or less CYA type of stuff and am okay with that but I did notice some omissions and additions that I would like to see addressed. The first is the removal of the "deposit guarantee" from the FAQ section. Obviously something like this cannot be insured by the FDIC, SIPC, etc. However, previously the FAQ section mentioned that TF personally insures all deposits from loss but this is no longer there. Why was this removed, do you no longer stand behind all deposits? There is also this addition: Important Notice: CoinLenders is not a bank or financial institution. This is not an investment, and CoinLenders does not solicit investments from anyone. CoinLenders is a fictional website operating for web development, entertainment and educational purposes only. I'm okay with the first two sentences but the last one bothers me. What exactly is a "fictional website?" And why is it operating for ONLY web development, entertainment, and education when there are real loans and other investments being done? For the record, I have had no issues with CoinLenders or with Trade Fortress. He has made good on all of his commitments to me, so this is not a scam accusation. I'm just a little concerned with some of the changes and would like to give him a chance to reply publicly. Thanks. |

Received an email that, "An attempt to login to your blockchain.info wallet was made from an unknown browser. Please confirm the following details are correct:"
Then it lists time, IP, and computer info followed by a link. This is the first time I've seen this email, seems legit but I didn't login and I have 2FA enabled so I should have received a text with a code if someone was trying to logon. I'm not really worried since there's nothing in the wallet but just want confirmation if anyone received this type of email before. Thanks.

Portugal's financial markets nosedived today amid fears that repayments on its £64billion bailout could soon become unsustainable as the government looked set to collapse following a spat over the country's austerity programme. If Portugal doesn't abide by the austerity program, its bailout creditors could halt the disbursement of funds, potentially leaving it unable to pay what it owes.

While the city of Detroit continues to teeter on the brink of bankruptcy, one developer is proposing a radical and revolutionary idea to rekindle the American spirit and bring Detroit back into prosperity.
The driving force behind the plan, developer Rodney Lockwood, wants Detroit to sell the city’s Belle Isle Park for $1 billion to private investors who will then transform it into a utopia free of big government and ideally full of job creation and innovation. Belle Isle is an uninhabited 928-acre island in the Detroit River, between the U.S. and Canada.
Under the plan, the island would be developed into a U.S. commonwealth or city-state with around 35,000 people. Citizenship for the “remarkable new nation” would cost $300,000 in most cases. It's well known that Bitcoin is used as a currency for many illegal activities. Before we go down that road, so are all other currencies but it got me thinking about other reasons why Bitcoin may be adopted by lets just say, less than honest individuals.
I read an article in Forbes recently that the wealthiest of the wealthy in the US make their income not off of wages, but off capital gains. In other words, the rich get richer because they own "stuff" not because they're necessarily productive. And capital gains are treated more favorable, taxwise, than ordinary income.
But what happens if you're able to eliminate capital gains tax altogether? Is this where Bitcoin steps in? A wealthy individual, private equity fund, whatever, comes in and purchases X Bitcoins at $10 and sells at $20. The second those BTC's are converted back to fiat, the gain is taxable. But who reports the gain to the IRS? I don't think MtGox does. And yeah MtGox =/= Bitcoin but they're the largest exchange so I'm just using them as an example. Wouldn't it be fairly easy for someone to hide their capital gains this way?
Now lets look at gambling. If I go to Vegas and hit a jackpot, they gave me the cash on the spot but they also gave me a 1099. If I were to win the same equivalent amount at say, SatoshiDice, there's no 1099. Presumably because you're winning in BTC's but that's easily convertible back to fiat not to mention you're relatively anonymous so they wouldn't be able to identify you let alone know what country of origin you're from. This may further expand as larger gambling operations come online and accept Bitcoin.
To be clear, I'm NOT advocating cheating on your taxes just as I wouldn't advocate buying on silk road, etc. But the fact remains there are some who can and will do it. The rich are always looking for tax loopholes. Maybe they found one in BTC and it is helping propel its price. Or maybe it's yet to be widely discovered and could potentially propel the price in the future. Thoughts?
