Is there a generalist bitcoin prediction market somewhere? Prediction markets are an awesome way to aggregate information, and seem like a perfect match for bitcoin. There used to be something called BitcoinFuture, but it seems dead. Any other projects?
Thanks!

I'm using bitcoin-qt on Arch linux, and catching up from a long time ago. I've noticed that the hard disk is working very hard all the time. It seems pretty fishy to me, since I'm downloading from a pretty slow DSL line, the disk should be working far less than that. What is going on?

I've been thinking, since all transactions are public, the balance associated with all public addresses is known. So an attacker could in theory concentrate all his computing power to try to find the private key associated to a single wealthy address.
How much computing power would be needed?

I think it would be a good idea to ban images in forum posts and signatures. It should make the forum look more boring, which should deter a good number of trolls and other people who post low-quality stuff. People will still be able to link to imgur or similar if they really need to show something.
What do you think?

I thought it would be interesting to see how paranoid the bitcoin community is, especially after this week-end.

Is it possible to refund people with bitcoin, ie. send coins back to where they came from? How should one do it?

I just made a new version of the bitcoin applet I make for KDE.
This is an important update, because it solves big slowness issues that the applet has been experiencing recently. All of my users, please update!
It also introduces a new algorithm for computing the current rate, which is based on the last 200 BTC worth of trades. It should be almost as robust as the previous method, but respond faster to big changes in price.

In the interest of market transparency, I think it's important for everyone to be able to understand as much as possible what's going on in the currency exchanges. Which is why I made the following chart: http://sd-12155.dedibox.fr/~joel/btc/mtgox.pngIn contrast with traditional charts, this one shows the volume of each trade (the area of each circle is proportional to the amount of money exchanged). The circles are transparent to allow viewers to appreciate the density of trades at a given time point. Hopefully this chart should allow people to better understand what's going on the next time the exchange rate swings widely, and to differentiate small jitter from big movement. Assuming I didn't bork my cron command, it should get updated every hour.

Is there a website or service that computes how much a megahash/s will earn you daily on average, taking into account the current difficulty?
Thanks!

Hi,
does anyone know who runs bitcoin service? I'd like to lower the price for my bitcoin gadget, but it doesn't seem to allow fractional prices! Unfortunately, there is absolutely no contact information on the site.
Also, if someone knows of a better service (with lower fees? 10% is really high!), I'd be interested as well.

I'm pretty sure most of us are wondering, so I thought it would be interesting to get the feeling of the community on this issue.

With the bitcoin to USD exchange rate falling steadily for one month now, I thought it would be interesting to know what people think about the future.

Hi all, I'd like to start a collective bounty for work on an open-source project with bitcoins. Basically, something like fundry ( http://fundry.com/about) with bitcoins. The idea is simple: a group of people decide they want a specific new feature in some open-source software, they create a pool of money. Anyone can work on the project. Upon completion, the creators of the bounty vote to decide if the requirements have been met, and if a majority is reached, the money goes to the developer. Does a similar service exist for bitcoin? Is someone working on it?

It seems the issue of inflation vs. deflation is pretty controversial, so I thought it would be interesting to see where the majority is, and how strong it is.

Hi all, I've written a simple windows gadget (desktop widget) to monitor the BTC/USD exchange rate at Mt. Gox. It looks like this: It displays the current exchange rate statistics, and will glow (in a non-intrusive way!) when the rate goes up or down, or when the volume increases. Anyways, I'm selling it for 0.10BTC. You can purchase it at http://www.bitcoinservice.co.uk/files/859. For those concerned about security, note that a .gadget file is simply a zip archive, and everything is in clear (the bulk of the gadget is specialized javascript); so you can audit it before you install it. Any remarks or suggestions welcome! PS: for those who prefer linux, just a reminder that I've made a similar widget that you can get for free: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Bitcoin+Rate?content=138572PPS: is there a place on the wiki for software like this?

I'm thinking of developing software for bitcoin users, and it would be useful to know what OSes the community uses. This should also be useful to other software developers.

It seems that there is a limited number of transactions that can be included in a block. I'd like to have an idea of how much the bitcoin network can scale up?
