1  Local / Markt / Casascius fysieke Bitcoins (2012 series: 1 BTC, 5 BTC, 10 BTC) on: November 27, 2013, 02:32:45 PM

Inclusief plastic capsule.
35 BTC per stuk.

Gratis afhalen of verzenden. Betaling in Bitcoin of in Nederlandse of Europese bankoverschrijving.

Quote from: PostNL
Geachte heer Van Voorden,
zoals bijvoorbeeld € of £ of $.

4  Economy / Trading Discussion / Best Practices: Preventing man-in-the-middle attacks on: March 07, 2013, 09:00:19 PM
Recently I've been the victim of a number of man-in-the-middle attacks. Here is an explanation of how they work:

Quote
Imagine a scammer contacting me to buy Bitcoins. At the same time the scammer gets into contact with someone else, let's call him Bob. The Scammer sells Bob bitcoins, or something else, let's say a coat.

The scammer then gives Bob my bank account number. Bob pays, thinking he's paying for a coat. I get Bob's money, thinking I've been paid for Bitcoins. Naturally, I send the scammer the requested Bitcoins.

Later, Bob doesn't get his coat, and file charges against me, because I received Bob's money. Meanwhile, the scammer is nowhere to be found.

This happened twice to me, at roughly the same time. I inquired with local law, and it turns out I had to refund the scammee, Bob.

Note that exchanges typically solve this problem by requiring you to verify your bank account beforehand. That's not really something I can do.
Discarded solutions are:

Asking for ID. They can be faked, or the request can be just as easily forwarded by the scammer.
Calling the person. This might work, but just a bit. So you have their phone number. What then?
Starting with small amounts. This might be helpful, but it's slow, and not really ideal.

The best solution I've been able to come up with is this: I require the buyer to put the link "www.is.gd/warning0" in the transaction message. The page behind the link explains that they should be talking to me, via my email, and explains the above scamming scenario. The scammer hopefully can't require Bob to put this in his transaction message, because Bob would wisen up when he reads the link.

I've not had any more MitM attacks since then, so so far it's been working. Suggestions are welcome.

9  Local / Nederlands (Dutch) / Ƀ on: July 18, 2012, 02:10:18 PM

Quote from: Matthew & Mqrius
[02:41:59 PM] Matthew N. Wright: We'll be releasing a new article in the Barnes and Noble first issue about the Bitcoin symbol and how it cannot work the way it is (it is incompatible with -anything- in the world right now), and showing everyone how to use the new recommended symbol (originally recommended by http://www.ecogex.com/bitcoin/ ). The symbol is Ƀ (U+0243)

This is an excerpt from the site: "Ƀ (U+0243) is a unicode character used as a "capitalized alternate symbol for the voiced bilabial fricative in Americanist phonetic notation". It is included in a lot of typefaces such as Arial, Times New Roman, Tahoma, Helvetica, Deja vu, Linux Biolinum, Linux Libertine, FreeSerif, Geneva, Gentium Plus, Microsoft sans serif, and many more..."

If I can get confirmation from you that you will adopt this standard symbol, I would like to list your name in the "supporters" column of https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydEFmWVVWQWpuYmwybExZY1A1d3Y0Z3c
[02:43:03 PM] Mqrius: Yeah, sure, I'll add it to my keyboard layout Smiley
[02:43:23 PM] Mqrius: What are these adoption tiers?
[02:45:10 PM] Matthew N. Wright: 1st means they're leading the pack
[02:45:15 PM] Matthew N. Wright: 2nd means they're going right after that
[02:45:17 PM] Matthew N. Wright: and 3rd means unsure
[02:45:39 PM] Mqrius: I'll take 1st Smiley
[02:46:02 PM] Mqrius: 's about time there was some decision about the logo
[02:46:35 PM] Mqrius: I don't like the colors much though :x
[02:46:44 PM] Matthew N. Wright: Nah, the colors are not required
[02:46:45 PM] Mqrius: http://www.ecogex.com/bitcoin/ They look depressing
[02:46:46 PM | Edited 02:46:49 PM] Matthew N. Wright: What's your email again?
[02:46:50 PM] Mqrius: Nuntius.Marii@Gmail.com
[02:48:15 PM] Mqrius: can/shall I spread this to people that may want to be on the list?
[02:48:24 PM] Matthew N. Wright: Yes!
[02:48:26 PM] Matthew N. Wright: Anyone!
[02:48:28 PM] Matthew N. Wright: Any businesses too!

Edit over de tiers:
1st = Front line
2nd = Ready to go when front line does
3rd = Need to see the effects of front line to decide
4th = Will do anything the "community" does
10  Local / Skandinavisk / Going on a holiday to Sweden, need some form of internet. on: July 16, 2012, 09:26:34 PM
At the start of August I'll be in Sweden for two weeks (middle of nowhere, really. "Skillingaryd"). I would very much like to have some internet there… I was considering buying a Swedish prepaid SIM card with data, but I have no idea about what to buy, where to buy it, etc.

Can anyone make some suggestions? I'm open to other options as well.

Thanks Smiley

Ik verkoop Bitcoin tegen Euros via simpele Nederlandse bankoverschrijving. Mijn actuele prijs is hier zichtbaar: http://bitcoin-otc.com/vieworderbook.php?sortby=thing&nick=Mqrius

Mijn KvK-nummer is 55307442, handelsnaam "Mqrius' Bitcoins".

13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / King Arthur's Gold considering accepting Bitcoin on: February 12, 2012, 07:54:12 PM
Has anyone heard of King Arthur's Gold?
KAG is one the first build'n'kill games in the world. It's a game about mining, building castles, destroying your enemies and collapsing their castle. It is a side-scrolling 2D action multiplayer war game with focus on building, constructing siege machines and intense PvP combat. Some inspirations for the game are Soldat, Minecraft, Dungeon Keeper & Ace of Spades. Currently available on Windows, Linux & MacOSX.

Basically, you build castles, walls, towers, siege weapons, and attack the other team's castles, walls, towers, etc. If you remove the support for a tower, the entire thing collapses. You can attack directly, try to build a huge sky-bridge, try to tunnel there, catapult yourself there, prevent others from getting to you with trapdoor'ed spike pits, bombs, arrows, chargestrikes, catapults, etc.

Anyway, it's fun. Multiplayer (64 players, anyone?), and free, although in the future there will be premium accounts getting more stuff.

Youtube link:

Anyway, they're currently looking at new payment options. I suggested bitcoin wherever I could (Google+, Facebook, their questionnaire), and at some point got into a long discussion about bitcoin on their IRC channel. (Basically whenever someone helps me on IRC, I suggest they post a bitcoin address so I can send them a few bitcents for their help. This has twice now led to some people learning about and installing bitcoin Smiley)

Anyway, a while later:

17  Bitcoin / Project Development / Electrum Unofficial Windows Builds - Now with Windows XP version on: December 06, 2011, 05:53:34 PM
I will post my no-dependencies windows builds of the Electrum thin client in this thread. I will add a post every time I make a new build, and also update this post to reflect the newest version.

These builds should run without installing any python or gtk or whatever, i.e., they should Just Work™.
Note: For some reason, the builds won't work under windows XP. See BitcoinBug's version, that might work.
Also, the file is named incorrectly when downloading with internet explorer.

Electrum 0.40a Build 1
MD5: b46efaa4e29e46903d050a9bdf9e90f7

* 'create' and 'restore' commands are now distinct, so that it is possible to create offline wallets. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum#Offline_wallet
(* Support for remote wallets. (demo here: http://ecdsa.org/remote.php. Detailed explanation: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=65136.0) <- I did not compile this. Let me know if anyone is interested in having this.

MD5: 6e8397686422c1f7c829b5b35b1fc72d

* New Qt GUI
* If you want to use the old Gtk gui, type:
Code:
 python electrum --gui gtk

Also currently available is BitcoinBug's build packaged by Cameyo, this apparently does work on Windows XP.
Cameyo packaged version of Electrum v0.40a.
It's GUI only, no console window.

MD5: 930d6a8efa2ee8fdafc1ab1a21696724

------------------------------------------------------

0.39

* two options have been added, for selecting transaction input and change address: --changeaddr, --fromaddr  [patch by DiThi]
* The status bar displays 'synchronizing' when the client is connected to the server, but is still waiting for history updates. (until now it was not showing this information)
* If the user's server is down, the client remains able to download the list of active servers, by sending queries to a default list.

------------------------------------------------------

Electrum 0.38 Build 1
MD5: 04058ba44bc5129d790722f9103a7dac

* aliases and signed URIs (see http://ecdsa.org/bitcoin_URIs.html )

18  Economy / Trading Discussion / Finally a response from the bitmarket.eu developers on: December 03, 2011, 01:07:22 PM
I took it upon myself to search for and contact the bitmarket.eu people directly, i.e., not via admin@bitmarket.eu.
I got a response from them today, 3 December 2011:
Quote
Hello,

First of all we're sorry for this situation. We understand that you and our other users who are in situation where their funds are blocked can get angry about it. We definitely would pay more attention to this, but there are few reasons why at the moment we don't. Biggest of these reasons is very simple - we were hoping that the site will pay for itself and our time they we invested in it (and we keep doing it, because it's hosted on a VPS server which costs us ~$40 /month). And now, when Bitcoin price has gone to record lows, we just have to work on other things to pay for our livings.

That being said we don't want to leave our users alone with this problem, and plan to do few things to aid this situation: - first of all, we'll invest some time, starting today, to straighten things for our users that have their funds blocked by malicious buyers/sellers. There are few dozens of these cases as I see now in our inbox, this should take no longer than few days. - second, I, as a developer of bitmarket.eu, plan to implement a simple mechanism that will automatically cancel a transaction and return funds to seller when the buyer doesn't respond. This should eliminate need for us to assist those cases, which in turn end up well for us as well as our users.

I hope that this explanation satisfies you. Should you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
That sounds good. It's also good to finally get a response.

PS: I may have threatened to release his personal information to a horde of angry users if he didn't respond. Seems to have worked Smiley
19  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / bitcoin:<action>:<address>:<amount>:<comment> Web-based protocol on: November 10, 2011, 03:38:37 AM
A simple integration step that I think is missing in the combined toolset is a web-based protocol. (A "bitcoin:" version of the "mailto" link)

Imagine this situation:

You register for mtgox, and want to deposit some bitcoins. You go to the deposit page, fill in the amount you want to deposit. MtGox generates a bitcoin protocol link, for example:

bitcoin:pay:1MtGoxAddress1es89fwSTYR:5:MtGox deposit to account BTCurious

By clicking a button or the link, the data is forwarded by the browser. You have installed the default bitcoin client earlier, which registered the bitcoin protocol, so this is now sent the data.
The client asks you:

Quote
Do you want to pay 5 Bitcoins to 1MtGoxAddress1es89fwSTYR? Payment data: "MtGox deposit to account BTCurious"
Yes/No

You click yes, and it's payed. You never have to copy/paste any addresses. You can connect the protocol to your favourite walletmanager, be it the standard client, or your webbased wallet.

A client might also provide the ability to generate these links to send to your buddy who wants to pay you:
bitcoin:pay:1JohnDoeAddress1n4e3o1tnsuy:50:You still owe me a Block, dude!

I believe this would very much increase the userfriendliness of payment and address management.

I propose creating a standard for this protocol. It's open for suggestions, but my initial idea is:

For doing payments (webshops, deposits, inter-person payments)
bitcoin:pay:<address>:<amount>:<comment>

For saving an address in an addresslist (useful for miner payout addresses, green addresses)
bitcoin:address:<address>:<comment>
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / ฿ <- Add this character to your keyboard with Keyboard Layout Creator on: October 31, 2011, 01:45:45 AM
If you want to type the Bitcoin currency character easily, you can add it to your keyboard layout. I'd share my new layout, but I personally use the Colemak layout and no one is using that anyway, I guess.

You can download the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (also works on windows 7) to edit it yourself.
If people let me know what keyboard layout they use, and what location for the ฿ is the most convenient, I might fix up some installers tomorrow.
