1  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-09-22] Winklevoss exchange to launch daily bitcoin auction on: September 22, 2016, 09:07:48 AM
Gemini Trust Co, the U.S.-based bitcoin exchange founded by investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, announced on Wednesday it will launch the first-ever auction for the digital currency aimed at facilitating high trading volumes and providing better prices.

The auction will kick off later on Wednesday initially for the U.S. dollar/bitcoin currency pair, Gemini said, and will eventually open the mechanism to all other digital currency pairs in the coming weeks.

Daily auctions are a common occurrence at traditional exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, enhancing price transparency and discovery.

The auction's launch on the Gemini exchange represents one of multiple efforts by market players to push trading of bitcoin and other digital currencies into the mainstream investing world.

"If you were building a securities exchange today, an auction would be a core feature," said Tyler Winklevoss, chief executive officer at Gemini in New York.

"We've built this trading mechanism to further Gemini's mission of building a next-generation exchange that advances the future of bitcoin trading."

In Part 1 of our two-part post on this subject, we’ll provide an introduction to the technology, its potential applications, and organizations that have been formed to foster it (similar to organizations formed during the development of the internet).

The pair followed bitcoin from its inception, but 2013 was a watershed year for the cryptocurrency. “It suddenly became very obvious that bitcoin has broken out of the ‘very interesting idea’ phase and has achieved traction as a ‘real-world’ technology,” van Rooyen said. “Also, the potential of colored coins, smart contracts and micropayment streams were just being realized. We decided to actively look at potential bitcoin applications, and especially at the ways it intersects with the Media Lab’s core research areas.”

8  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-20] Segregated Witness has been released, tackling bitcoin's........... on: April 20, 2016, 07:11:31 AM
Bitcoin core developer Pieter Wuille recently completed a long-awaited upgrade to the bitcoin protocol. Segregated Witness, or 'SegWit' for short has now been published, and miners can now upgrade their software.

Having become an overnight sensation during the Hong Kong Scaling Bitcoin conference, in December of last year, SegWit redesigns the core process of the bitcoin protocol itself, making it more efficient.

The protocol change,  which has also been referred to as 'Separated Signatures,' removes the part of each bitcoin transaction that carries the digital signature, putting them alongside the blockchain instead.

Exactly three months ago, a well-known bitcoin developer, Mike Hearn, wrote a post on Medium that rocked the community of people who believe in the future of the digital currency and its technology. Bitcoin, he wrote, has failed. “It has failed because the community has failed… Worse still, the network is on the brink of technical collapse.” The post led to screaming headlines about the end of bitcoin.

And yet, the industry plugs along. The currency is trading at $430 USD. Transaction volume (the number of bitcoin transactions per day) is higher now than it was before Hearn’s post, according to a tracker at Just this week, the Wall Street Journal profiled a top ETF (exchange-traded fund) attorney who is advocating for a bitcoin ETF, the same effort that Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are pushing.

11  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-18] BitPay Cautions Users Against Trojan Virus Affecting BTC Purchases on: April 18, 2016, 07:37:57 AM
BitPay explains that the Trojan.Coinbitclip virus attacks a computer's clipboard. When the bitcoin user copies and pastes the bitcoin address of his intended recipient, the valid bitcoin address is changed to a bitcoin address controlled by the attacker who introduced the virus. The attacker's bitcoin address (which often looks very similar to the original address) receives the funds.

“This virus has not compromised any wallets or payment systems. Instead, it's introduced into Windows computers through malicious software or email attachments”, BitPay added.
12  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-15] 7 myths about the Bitcoin blockchain on: April 15, 2016, 06:44:47 AM
Everyone’s talking about the Bitcoin blockchain – a global, distributed ledger of transactions for the Bitcoin digital currency – allowing for peer-to-peer payments over the Internet.

According to a Gartner definition, the Bitcoin blockchain is “an authoritative record of Bitcoin transactions, and is not stored in, or controlled by, a central server.” Instead, transaction data is replaced as a whole across a peer-to-peer network of thousands of coins.

The Bitcoin blockchain is being applied across many industries in areas such as the Internet of Things, digital rights management, and global payments.
13  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-15] New conference speaker: Bharath Rao, founder of Coinpit Inc. on: April 15, 2016, 01:12:48 AM
Coinpit is a futures exchange which offers futures contracts denominated in Bitcoin. Currently, they offer inverse USD/BTC contracts. More contracts will be added based on demand. Furthermore, Coinpit is a pure Bitcoin in/out exchange and does not deal with any fiat, which eliminates any exchange rate risk. When it comes to security, Coinpit uses multi-sig addresses where a user’s private key is never transmitted to the exchange. This feature assures that a security breach cannot compromise any user’s funds, making this exchange immune to failure from theft from internal or external agents.

17  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-11] How to Prove You're Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto on: April 11, 2016, 02:28:12 PM
If bitcoiners like Andresen and Brito are setting a high bar for Wright, it’s because serious holes have already been poked in his resumé. Wright first came to WIRED’s attention through a large collection of leaked emails, meeting transcripts and accounting documents, as well as old posts from his blog that seemed to strongly suggest he’d created bitcoin. But WIRED also found that some of those blog posts had been backdated, either as part of a hoax or as a sign that Bitcoin’s creator was ready to take credit for his work. After both WIRED and Gizmodo published our findings on Wright’s background, other inconsistencies appeared, including the fact that two PhDs Wright claimed to have received from Charles Sturt University in Australia don’t appear to exist, nor do a pair of supercomputers Wright claimed to own and even managed to get listed in the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

20  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-04-09] Bitcoin Bores Traders as Volume Declines on Price Stability on: April 09, 2016, 04:46:58 AM
Bitcoin spent most of the seven days ending 8th April fluctuating between $415 and $425 amid modest trading volume.

These developments largely mirrored the previous week, with the exception of the fact bitcoin experienced weaker trading volume compared to the last several weeks.

Some market experts sought to explain bitcoin’s relative price stability by asserting that low volatility has sapped the interest of many traders. George Samman, a blockchain advisor and consultant, told CoinDesk that bitcoin's volatility has fallen to its lowest since 2012, and that as a result, "volume has dried up" and lies far below both its 52-day and 52-week moving average.

"I still believe it’s the calm before the storm," he stated, adding that this is "pretty much a no trade zone."

Zane Tackett, director of community and product development at Bitfinex, struck a similar tone by telling CoinDesk that "there's a lot of watching and waiting", and that as a result, "things are pretty calm."
