1  Other / Politics & Society / War is in the Air!!!! on: June 20, 2014, 09:27:39 AM
Or so it may seem.  Not sure how far the crisis in Crimea will go - or how far Russia will go with the Ukraine.  The other eastern European nations are quite concerned also about Russia.

The Middle east, of course, is standard fare.

And Iran is accusing the US of sabatoge.  Not sure what might come of that.  I don't think Israel strking Iran is off the table yet.

And China is making threatening noise in the east Pacific.

Anything left out?
2  Other / Off-topic / Job Offer Pending Background check and what should I do on: May 08, 2014, 11:12:43 PM
Hey yall!

I'm in a conundrum, looking for a little advice.

I just received an excellent job offer for a company I would die to work for.. but it's contingent on background check.

I got a DUI 3.5 years ago, and there's a little travel involved with the job, so I'm worried they might mark me as too much of a liability for insurance.

The thing is.. I need to relocate, and I am in desperate need of a new car. My car waterpump blew on the way to my last interview and I pushed it anyway so I wouldn't miss the interview. Thankfully it was 0ºF, no suspected damage to the engine. It was steaming and misfiring. I thought for sure the car was done for.

--

So, what if I sign on an apartment and worst case scenario, they rescind the offer 3 days before I start?

I'm handing in my paperwork to HR tomorrow. Should I bring the misdemeanor to her attention and ask for a confirmation whether everything checks out or not? I start in 2 weeks.

4  Economy / Economics / Using a nations $ fiat is passive support for all of its social & Econmic policy on: April 26, 2014, 04:07:08 PM
Unless you are actively involved in politics, using a nation's fiat currency (the United States Dollar, for example) is passive support for its social and economic policies. Unfortunately, if you are a North American then merely voting in the ballot box simply doesn't qualify as "actively involved" (let's face it, the choices given between Republican and Democrat are mostly meaningless.) Much more important is, as the saying goes, "voting with your dollar." By using the dollar, you prop up the United States Federal Reserve, its Legislature, many American corporations that have twisted laws to their own benefit, and all of the greedy moneygrubbers on Capitol Hill that pass self-interested legislation.

For example: the United States has very punitive drug prohibition laws. These laws, which imprison people (citizens and foreigners alike) for drug possession, trafficking, sale, and manufacture, artificially inflate the prices of many drugs such that the profit potential is simply irresistible for people that are willing the break the law. Law enforcement officers arrest criminals, criminals go through the justice system, and criminals get put behind bars: all on the taxpayer dollar.

See where this is going? By using the dollar, you are passively participating in this entire system. Now, you could be very actively involved in politics and lobbying and grassroots organization... And if you are, then bravo. Much more likely, however, is that you are not. In that case, the most important way you vote is with your dollar.

Bitcoin allows you to decouple your everyday life from the tainted politics of the United States Dollar, freeing you from the Fed and allowing you to participate in a truly market-driven currency. Vote with your bitcoin--or vote with your cryptocurrency of choice if bitcoin isn't it. But please: consider the effects of lending your support for the dollar and consider weaning yourself from it, or else go get active in politics and try and change our odious laws.
5  Other / Off-topic / How, in the end, do you think the world will end? on: April 23, 2014, 03:18:41 AM
Seeing how things are going right now, i'd guess that either nuclear warfare+winter or yellowstone erupting does us in

note: for this substitute "world" with "all of humanity"

7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Forget China woes, there's potentially an even bigger player India!! on: April 22, 2014, 11:51:16 PM
India is in reality a sleeping giant. It has the largest middle class in the world, and an exceptionally gifted, intelligent and innovative young generation coming through.

At the moment India seems to be sitting on the fence with the concept of cryptocurrencies.

If doge was to get in through some charity work in India - either something similar like doge4water, or helping to improve the plight of the poor then the Indian community would sit up and take notice.

Importantly for the poor in India the movement of crypto through mobile phone apps rather than using a bank would work well in villages and small communities. No need to run around with wads of cash that could get lost or stolen.
