1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / How best to store output descriptors/wallet backups on: July 27, 2023, 04:54:51 PM
I am wondering what the best practice is for storing output descriptors. Currently I have them offline on USB drives. However, there is an obvious risk of physical/environmental degradation over time. My instinct is that it would be foolish to save them on a cloud. I guess the tradeoff is physical degradation vs. being hacked. I'm guessing the latter is probably more likely.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Multisig derivation paths and xpubs on: June 27, 2023, 09:12:05 PM
I am having trouble wrapping my head around derivation paths in multisig setups. I had a multisig wallet with the derivation path m/49/0/3 (i.e., each key used that path). I wanted to swap a key to set up a new wallet. I used Sparrow and, even though the new device used the derivation path m/48/0/0/2 and the other two had m/49/0/3, it still generated the multisig wallet (i.e., Sparrow detected no error).

My question is, can each device in a multisig setup have a different derivation path? I always thought every device had to refer to the same one.
3  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Using Electrum private server in Sparrow wallet on: June 18, 2023, 12:54:49 AM
I have been using the .onion address for my Electrum server for a while now. This afternoon it stopped connecting, giving me the message "socks: host unreachable. check if the proxy server is running."

I used the 192.168.0.16 address no problem.

Any idea as to why the .onion address no longer works?
4  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Sparrow wallet update 1.7.3 on: March 22, 2023, 02:34:39 PM
I recently installed the Sparrow update 1.7.3, verified the PGP key, but my antivirus package started going crazy when I tried to sign a transaction, quarantining all the .tmp files. Is anyone else having this issue?
5  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Master fingerprint on: March 12, 2023, 07:36:52 PM
Hi all,

I am trying to get my head around the master fingerprint and fingerprint.

Am I right in thinking that every xpub has a fingerprint, and the master fingerprint is the fingerprint of the signing device?

Many thanks.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Public keys and derivation path on: March 12, 2023, 07:10:18 AM
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knew a tool like Ian Coleman's BIP 39 mnemonic converter, but that could show you the public key changes according to the derivation path?

Thanks.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Cold storage dilemma on: December 14, 2022, 04:18:29 PM
The single sig/multisig debate seems to be coming to the fore again.

As a current collaborative custodial multisiger, I am keen to be fully self sovereign. I had thought I'd go the route of 2-of-3 multisig. I believe I have the knowledge after educating myself (backup xpubs, seeds, derivation path), but reading about multisig "degradation," and conscious of the fact that there may be many other aspects of multisig that could break that I don't know about, would a Coldcard with a backup in a commercial vault be less risky? I mean, I'll know if the vault gets raided (highly unlikely). With far fewer moving parts, this has to be the safer option, surely?
8  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum multisig for long-term cold storage on: December 01, 2022, 11:58:36 AM
I am thinking of establishing a 2 of 3 multisig with Electrum, creating a watch only wallet from the xpubs, and leaving it there for a long while, backing up all seeds in separate locations.

I'll probably use native segwit as a derivation path.

My question is, should Electrum be unavailable, will I be able to reestablish access to the multisig wallet if in 10 years I want to spend funds and have all seeds and xpubs available to me?

Also, I assume I can use one of the seeds for my multisig wallet for a single sig wallet?
