1  Other / Beginners & Help / Cautious of the Web on open source on: May 12, 2024, 10:58:32 PM
So I found out today that Bitget wasn't open source but searching online it usually shows that they open source
Same as trust wallet which was but no longer open source.
This is evidence that not everything read online is correct. Some sites even consider Ethereum as the most decentralized cryptocurrency.
I believe many had experienced cases similar to this before
Back to the topic
To find out if a platform is really open source
Search for them on github and check their repository or code to see if it's public or private
Public means is open sourced while private means closed.
Take notice of the date too
Some that were open source like Trustwallet might still leave their previous code online
Despite it already been changed.
There you can find yourself rather than relying on answers from the web.

DYOR is underrated.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Principles Of Bitcoin on: May 03, 2024, 10:27:05 AM
Just like there exist the principle of money said applies to Bitcoin.

Principles of Bitcoin

The principle of Bitcoin are the fundamental proposition that serves as the foundation where the belief system or behavior of Bitcoin. They are the fundamental attributes that makes Bitcoin,Bitcoin. These are

21 million coins: The total supply should never exceed 21million coins (the true total supply is 20,999, 999.9769 if not approximated)

Censorship Resistance: There should be certain resistance to power or individual from preventing valid transactions from being confirmed.

Permissionless: As the name implies, Been in the network should require Nobody permission. It is opened for everyone, there's no gate keeper or guardian whose permission would be needed to join the network. Permissionless is usually used interchangeably with Trustless.
Quote
What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust

Open-Source: This is a term I believe everyone here has come across one way or the other. Bitcoin source code should always be open for anyone to read modify copy or share.

Pseudonymous Or Incognito: this principle state that there should be no requirement for IDs to access the network.
Quote
The necessity to announce all transactions publicly
precludes this method, but privacy can still be maintained by breaking the flow of information in
another place: by keeping public keys anonymous. The public can see that someone is sending
an amount to someone else, but without information linking the transaction to anyone

Fungible: Every coin, every Sats are equal and should be spent equally.

Immutable: The Blockchain history should never be changed. Every transactions should be irreversible.
Others are Decentralization, peer to peer system, verification of rules etc.
We can tell that from the above, the keyword is should. If Bitcoin starts failing in the above then it starts becoming something else that isn't Bitcoin.
No principle is ever fully perfect because of the unpredictability of human factor.
I would highlight some things that seems like they going against the principle.

Pseudonymous: The advent of KYC goes against this principle. ID's are not needed to use the network but a pseudonym that's your wallet address.

Fungible: the two words I would say is runes. He created runes a non fungible token by placing values on individual Sats. The believers here are of the notion that all Sats are not same and shouldn't be spent equally like we saw an individual buying a Sat for $3.3M won't say stupid but.....

Decentralization: This is some kind of a sore topic but Bitcoin of today isn't fully decentralized and might not get better in the future. One of the prohibited changes even if there come about unanimous decision on bitcoin is introducing centralization. This change can be considered as been against the spirit of Bitcoin and like i said before the end result shouldn't be called Bitcoin.

Now knowing this principles there are certain individuals I call the Bitcoin Police or accountant that helping in keeping this principles in order. The Bitcoin Nodes, but we can't talk about them without throwing some lights in Miners and Developers.

Bitcoin Miners : information on this individuals can be found in the Net and wouldn't want to bore you with them. In simple term they mine Bitcoin like we have mining Gold and help in the security of the Blockchain.

Bitcoin Developers : these are individuals that are focused in proposing, designing and optimizing protocols that define the function of the Bitcoin Blockchains. They are involved in BIP(Bitcoin improvement proposals) and if interested you can apply or check ongoing or finished BIPhere

Bitcoin Nodes :Here I would be focusing on Full nodes. They perform quite similar job in the blockchain but ain't rewarded for their actions (miners needs to be rewarded because it's more expensive mining than owning a full node. It can be considered altruistic.
Like I said earlier they are like a security force in the Blockchain and helps in keeping datas and work in accordance with the consensus Rule.

The more Full nodes in the network the better Bitcoin gets Decentralized, this is why it is encouraged to run a full node if you have the capacity.
Full nodes have been on the rise if you check https://bitnodes.io

The 8 year chart of reachable Nodes.

These individuals The miners, developers, and Nodes are needed in the maintenance and running of the Bitcoin Blockchain .

Funny how despite been reading or learning about Bitcoin and stuff, I have never read the white paper until today.
For those that haven't try it out its worth the time not to mention is barely 8 pages long.
The quoted portion were from the Bitcoin white paper. If you interested in downloading you can try
here.

3  Other / Meta / Post per day/ per month falling. on: April 15, 2024, 08:15:19 AM
I came across the chart of the posts per day and month in ninjastics and was surprised that it has been falling for the last days /month  despite the halving of this year.

Is there a reason For this continuous fall in posts?
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Be cautious when copying wallet addresses on: April 06, 2024, 07:51:23 PM
I made same post in Altcointalk.
Can't really start writing another different speech so will do well to copy it here.

Quote
I never knew this was possible so usually just copy the address and send without confirming much. Well turns out that was a big mistake on my part. Never knew that clipboard can do such. I don't know if it's a malware, I ended up using an address that wasn't mine and funny holds some units of Bitcoin.

Still confused how something like this could happen,  but try to be cautious and don't feel too lazy to cross check your address before sending or posting. Recall Bitcoin transactions are irreversible after 6 confirmations, once confirmed it's gone. You can tell the wallet address it went to but not the owner. Except they are careless,  which I doubt they are
.

I would suggest using a phone or system you don't usually use to browse the web to hold your coins or better still an Hardware wallet.
5  Other / Meta / What's Beginners and help section really about on: March 27, 2024, 07:11:09 AM
With the name, I was of the notion that it would entail threads like "How to" and "What not to". But most of the time I get there I usually find threads with nothing relating to help or guide filling the section.
Call me old school but I feel the section is not living up to its name currently.

Not excluding the fact that every new member usually try to introduce themselves by creating a Thread.
Imo the idea that was implemented where a notice shows when viewing a thread by a scammer( this function I recently found out) since this member is not trusted and such message will show because I haven't spent up-to 7 days online in the forum, I have forgotten the exact wordings though.

What am trying to say is if it would be possible for a pop up or notice with link show in the homescreen directing the newbie to a thread they can introduce themselves and maybe get some ideas and knowledge about how the forum works.

My idea could be one sided or narrow, so would appreciate our thoughts on this.
6  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Where do you buy your usdt from now on: February 29, 2024, 10:57:05 PM
It's going to be short
Someone should help me with a platform I can buy usdt through p2p that wouldn't be stressful.
Safety should be at least as good as Binance.
Thanks.
7  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / CBN sold $300million to Banks on: February 28, 2024, 02:52:08 PM
https://punchng.com/cbn-sells-over-300m-to-banks-as-naira-gains/.
Came across this
Which I believe is the reason for the naira gain to dollar
At the time of writing dollar to naira is #1430 down around 7%.
This action taken by the CBN would it have any effect on the long run?
Despite this fall
Price of goods for market nor gree fall
The country people themselves just dey use dollar as opportunity to increase goods prices.
Currently Bitcoin has finally crossed $60K and I believe holders of usdt are fewer than Last week.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Is Bitcoin ETF really the best to hold? on: February 03, 2024, 07:49:05 AM
I'm not trying to undermine the impact the ETF has/would have on Bitcoin, especially as a form of advertising mechanism and providing some element of legality to it.

I still don't understand why one would prefer owning an ETF rather than holding the true thing (Bitcoin).
Bitcoin ETF is more expensive to hold with fee ranging from 0.2% to 1.5% than one holding the real Bitcoin
Not to mention unlike Bitcoin, it isn't permissionless nor does it provide any private key that shows one is the sole owner.

I know that it could serve as a bridge to bring to the awareness of individuals about Bitcoin and maybe let them realise its utility and start using it.

But I'm still curious why individuals would prefer to own an ETF rather than Bitcoin itself?  Does it stem from their mistrust against anything that goes against the norm?

Note: My question stems from my miniscule understanding of ETF.Clarifications would be appreciated.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin an opportunity like land on: January 20, 2024, 11:23:55 AM
This might not be applicable everywhere but in my Country Nigeria i can attest to it.

Land price is ever growing and its supply is gradually reducing(limited supply) which has helped pushed the price more, unlike some fixed assets which depreciates in value with time.

Lands in the time of old was barely of any value. Something man just met and didn't know how valuable it is. In the past, couple of decades ago the prices of land were cheap due to its abundant supply in my country but now to buy a land is not something one can just wake up and do. Its very expensive especially in developed areas and even the rural areas increased the prices because demands is getting higher than supply. A land that could be bought for #5000($3.8 ) is been sold in millions of naira (>$2000).

This phase of growth to me could be likened to Bitcoin, while Land is in the physical realm Bitcoin occupies the digital. During Bitcoin inception its price was zero, many didn't consider its value but as times goes on the world started seeing its importance and many smart individual are holding already. It reminds of grandparents who kept their lands for years and later sold to school their kids abroad or improve the status of their family.

Now the price of land is so high that it would be difficult to get some acres by an average family but not Bitcoin. Since its divisible one can buy as little as a dollar and enjoy the privilege of fore fathers in getting their land at a relatively low cost.

Land was an opportunity for the past century and still till date, Bitcoin is one of ours. We were fortunate to be around the era where it can be bought by anyone. So try to take advantage of it.

Land owners who didn't enjoy their investment paved a great foundation for their children.
Bitcoin supply is limited like land and would continue to grow in price as inflation continues to affect the world.

In my country, especially in products gotten from lands like agricultural products, the law of gravity doesn't apply. As it rises yearly, the increase continues.

Buy now and don't start waiting for huge dip before entering. Trust me you would miss out.
There are people that sold their lands around 5 years ago and are regretting not keeping till date.
In the case of having a land, i believe leasing is better.

Its better for your regret to be not buying more than for it been not buying at all.

How's the price of land in your country?
Have you ever thought been in the time where land was cheap and bought alot?
Are you boarding the train(cheap) of Bitcoin holders or you want to wait for private jets? Grin
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Social engineering a risk to security on: January 16, 2024, 09:18:39 AM
Social engineering in security is the act of Manipulating individuals into divulging their confidential information. This method has been used by many hackers to gain access and also use individuals information for fraudulent act.

Techniques

  • Water holing

  • Pretexting

  • Baiting: This one is something i never expected. The hacker Purposely drops a Malware infected usb, floppy disk or CD rom in strategic places where is common for people to forget things like a public toilet or bus and rely on victims curiosity and greed to take actions. The drives are usually tagged with something that would arouse the victim curiosity or greed to plug into their system to find out whats inside. This would give them access to the computer to perform any fraudulent act or collect victims personal datas

Now what brought about my research on social engineering was a method called sim Jacking.

Sim Swapping
To be honest i never knew it was possible to gain a person 2FA code without having access to the sim. I have always be paranoid with leaving my Mobile number online and this made me affirmed by decision. KYC is dangerous in the hands of reputable platforms but more so in individuals hands. Binance p2p merchant (some) usually ask for their customers number and this number can make one vulnerable to sim swapping attack.

Known Victim
This was used against the former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey which was quite embarrassing for one so renowned. Proof that been popular or rich doesn't protect your data. You have to be active about it and not passive.

Sim swapping uses the weakness of 2FA and two steps verification since they are sent via sms or call to the specified number. This method start by the hacker gathering confidential information about the victim either through phishing or social engineering.the fraudster contacts the victim's mobile telephone provider. The fraudster convince the telephone company to port the victim's phone number to theirs. This would enable them receive the OTP code that can be used to login in place of the original owner. It can even be used as a method to gain a log in password through forgot password setting.

This https://haveibeenpwned.com/ can be used to check your Internet presence using email, phone number and linked online services.
VPN especially paid ones can help reduce your Internet presence. Torr is also an important privacy method.

You might think why should i protect my privacy or keep my internet presence secure when i barely have any funds to loss. Don't forget collecting your data can make it easy to impersonate you of a crime you know nothing of. Medical report ain't excluded too.
As it is said
Prevention is better than sacrifice
Protect your datas
Improve security continuously.

"At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security"-Jodi Rell.

The thing is,I have read quite some thread on security but never knew it was possible to deceive ones network provider to transfer a phone number to another. There are alot of threads that have been created in the forum to assist with privacy.
You can tell by my text am kinda lazy so you can check it out via the search button (search privacy).
I am sure others would drop their opinions as well as link to said thread.

Thanks in Advance.
11  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Who has tried buying via Bank on: January 16, 2024, 08:37:43 AM
I don't know if there are others still feeling cautious towards the ban been lifted
I personally haven't tried it
So would like to ask has anybody tried buying via bank?
If so how was the experience compare to P2P?

Hearing about Social engineering has affirmed my decision not to share my number via P2P.
12  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin core,Developers and maintainers. on: December 19, 2023, 04:59:22 PM
I decided to check up about Bitcoin core developers but something's still feels confusing for me.

What I could gather was:

Bitcoin core is an open source software that act as a gateway to the Bitcoin blockchain. There exist others but Bitcoin core is the most influential since it was created by Satoshi.

Bitcoin core developers are most time anonymous and could leave and join at any time. There also exist organizations that helps in funding their activities.

Bitcoin core maintainer's are five in numbers and can be changed if they go against the Bitcoin consensus.

My confusion:

Bitcoin core developers was a term I came across for the first time during the reign of ordinals early this year, where a post criticized the core developers for allowing such thing occur.

They still appeared when discussions on increasing Bitcoin block size is been discussed. Does that mean that through consensus Bitcoin core developers can make changes to the blockchain or does their control only end in the Bitcoin core.

Bitcoin core maintainer's role still confuses me. Their role look similar to that of core developers.

Is there any group that checks and balance the activities of the Bitcoin core developers?

I always thought I knew about Bitcoin core
until I asked myself what it entails and it came out blank.

Clarification would be appreciated.

14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Individuals attached to Bitcoin history on: June 01, 2023, 12:47:08 PM
This thread was created to discuss about Bitcoin history based on the people attached to its adventure and to share the stories of individuals that have contributed and encouraged Bitcoin growth. I can't really surf the internet for all, I believe it would be easy if contributions are added.

There are already popular guys like GameKyuubi the Creator of Hodling(HODL), laszro the first person to make transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain and Lot's more. Would like to kick this off by talking about Wences Casares . Casares wasn't convinced of Bitcoin claims and hired security teams for $500000 to hack the bitcoin blockchain around 2010. After 6 months of having No result he gave up and became a Bitcoin evangelist, ironic that he even created a Bitcoin security firm Xapo.
Contribution will be appreciated. It shouldn't be a wall of test something concise and straight forward.  Thank you
15  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin block halving a criteria for Bitcoin survival on: May 26, 2023, 06:23:52 AM
Before I start please I don't understand this statement
Quote
No third-party sites/clients, bug reports that do not require much discussion (use github), or support requests.

Change is usually accompanied by some resistance, and Bitcoin aim was to deviate from the traditional reliant on centralized to decentralized, was satoshi reason for halving to increase the public knowledge on Bitcoin before it is fully mined?

If there wasn't any halving Bitcoin would had been fully mined around 2019-2020 with 50Btc per block, would it have been another digital currency implementation failure or would it still be surviving?

this is my personal opinion since the coin currently dey on presale and don start their airdrop with lockdrop program to prevent sell pressure wey affect coin like Arbitrum(ARB).
