BlockCypher provides Bitcoin wallet services to larger organizations such as exchanges and payment providers. During the recent fracas of "dust" transactions crowding the Bitcoin network, one of their larger clients, Erik Voorhees' ShapeShift.io, suffered a double-spend attack amounting to 2.6 BTC. The biggest offering of BlockCypher is what they call a "Confidence Factor" which basically means what it sounds like – if the processor is reasonably sure (as in more than 99%) that a double-spend will not be attempted, the transaction is processed with zero confirmations. BlockCypher describes their method like so: In simpler terms, if an unconfirmed transaction returns a confidence factor of 99.9%, then our data says there's a 0.1% chance that an attempted double-spend will succeed. By design, we're conservative. Getting Bitcoin in the EU could change irrevocably today as the European Court of Justice Advocate General decides on whether to charge value-added tax on the sale of bitcoins or not. While some individual countries such as the United Kingdom have already implemented a strategy regarding Bitcoin, exempting it from VAT and treating it as a foreign currency, the whole EU is subject to the rules being decided on today. OKCoin's defense system was put the test on July 10 when a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack prevented some users from accessing its platform from 17:00 to 17:19. Xin Chen, chief financial architect at OKCoin, told CCN the attackers wanted to influence the bitcoin price, which they succeeded in doing for the short term. “There is an impact on the short-term price of bitcoin from the attacks,” Xin Chen said. “The attacks were simultaneously carried on OKCoin, Huobi, Bitfinex and perhaps others. It costs resources to carry out a DDOS attack and it is likely in our estimation that the malicious attackers acted with the intent to influence the price of bitcoin. ECUREX GmbH, a Zurich, Switzerland-based digital finance marketplace for traders and financial institutions, has become the first digital currency exchange platform to be fully compliant with the Swiss Banking Act. The ECUREX trading system is not yet operating, but the team announced that this is its next objective. The team has scheduled the system’s first release.
The company reported the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has released an opinion letter stating that ECUREX’s business model is compliant with the Swiss Banking Act. FINMA released the letter following 16 months of investigation, ECUREX noted.
A challenging regulatory environment
“Switzerland probably has the most challenging regulatory environment for such a business and we are thrilled to be the first with a business model that allows us to operate here,” said Paolo Tasca, CEO of ECUREX. “We think a stable regulatory environment is not only beneficial for us in the long-term, but also for our customers.”
ECUREX has also been the first digital currency exchange platform to be compliant with the Swiss Anti-Money Laundering Act since April 2014, the company noted.
Digital currency equivalent to foreign currency
Regulation of digital currency exchanges in Switzerland is stricter than in other countries because it considers digital currencies equivalent to any other foreign currency. The professional operation of bitcoin trading platforms constitutes financial intermediation with the requirement to comply with both the Banking Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
ECUREX uses a multi-level platform to provide users security and control over their own deposits throughout the trading cycle.
