1  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Is my GPU dying? on: August 19, 2012, 05:44:09 AM
My shader unlock 6950 was fine mining at 930MHz @ 1.200V all day long. I had it at that speed for a couple of weeks with no issues, but it randomly started crashing again and again. It won't even run stable at 900MHz @ 1.200V without giving a BSOD after 5-10 minutes of mining. I haven't changed any settings which would make it do this. It's still fine for gaming at 920MHz @ 1.200V. Temperatures are always below 80°C. I just get the feeling that the GPU is on its way out and I can't understand why it was perfectly stable but now it's not.

If I flick the BIOS switch back to the original BIOS it's even more unstable. It has to be over volted on the stock BIOS just to mine at stock clocks without crashing.
2  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Gaming vs mining clock speeds and volts on: August 12, 2012, 11:00:21 AM
I'm finding that with my shader unlock 6950 I need more voltage for the same clock speeds to be stable in BF3. Usually I run 930MHz @ 1.200V for mining, and it's stable at that all day using -v -w 128 flags, but for BF3 it keeps crashing even at stock memory clocks so I have to either increase the voltage or decrease the core clock speed. I thought that mining would place a lot more stress on the card than gaming, and therefore present stability issues more quickly than gaming. The card is otherwise fine.
3  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 6950 mining problems on: July 30, 2012, 05:48:10 AM
I'm using GUIMiner v2012-02-19 with a reference 6950 with a shader unlock BIOS mod. The card is perfectly stable with Furmark at 900MHz core for a few hours @ 1.2V. The problem is when I'm mining if I run it at any higher than the stock 800MHz clock speed it will mine for a few minutes, even up to 30 minutes and then it will just stop mining. GUIMiner will say that it's still mining, but looking at Afterburner it says the GPU is idling, and Deepbit will also say that it's not mining. I've tried increasing the voltage to 1.225V, but then it still gives the same issues. If I run it at stock speeds and volts then it's fine all day long. The GPU temperature doesn't exceed 70°C.

Sometimes the screen will flash and I'll get a message in the system tray stating that the AMD GPU driver has crashed and successfully recovered, other times I don't get that message. I'm using Catalyst 12.6.

EDIT: Now I just got a BSOD with 870MHz @ 1.2V.
4  Other / Off-topic / Anyone here know much about boats? on: September 19, 2011, 12:27:24 AM
I'm looking at buying a ski biscuit, water skis or a kneeboard to tow behind a small inflatable boat with a 30hp engine. Which one of those things would require the least amount of power to tow? I'm thinking that a kneeboard or water skis has a smaller surface area than an inflatable tube, therefore having less water resistance which will make me go faster. Anyone know much about this sort of thing?
5  Other / Off-topic / How do I hide my internet traffic? on: September 07, 2011, 02:08:44 AM
I'm worried that the government over here is watching what people download, so what is the easiest way to hide my traffic? I'm looking at hiding p2p traffic for Bittorrent downloads and was thinking about setting up a VPN. I'm prepared to pay up to US$10 a month to hide my traffic, but since I'm a complete noob at this kind of thing I'm after something that is as easy as possible to configure as well as giving me a high level of anonymity.
6  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5850 voltage control on: August 30, 2011, 10:57:18 AM
My XFX 5850 doesn't seem to have any voltage control. I tried to adjust the voltage with Afterburner and Trixx, but the voltage is locked. I can easily change the voltage on my 6950. Would voltage control be available if I make a new BIOS with Radeon BIOS editor or if I downloaded a new BIOS? My card is this one here http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/g...ries/5850.aspx
7  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Flashing 6950 BIOS on: August 30, 2011, 10:52:26 AM
I edited a BIOS using RBE but I can't figure out how to flash my card. I tried using WinFlash but I just get the "SubsytemIDs mismatch" error message, and ATI Flash doesn't work because I get a message saying that it's not compatible with my OS (Windows 7 Pro x64). All I really want to do is unlock the shaders and increase the overclocking limit because I think the 6970 BIOS I have on it at the moment is leading to a few stability issues.
8  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / GUI Miner won't work on: August 29, 2011, 09:02:48 PM
This morning when I turned on my computer I tried to start GUI Miner as usual, and it came up in the system tray and in the task bar when I clicked it with Windows 7 but I couldn't get the app to pop up on my screen. I restarted the computer and same problem. I updated to the latest version of GUI Miner and it still won't work. Any suggestions? Last night after I stopped my miners for the night to shut down the computer the computer BSOD as I tried to quit GUI Miner.

I just downloaded Diablo miner but that app won't even open.
9  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / I killed my 5970 on: August 25, 2011, 11:43:29 AM
I took the Accelero cooler off my 5970 because it's a crappy cooler which made the VRMs overheat, so I then put the stock cooler back on. Now the motherboard makes the "No VGA detected" series of beeps, so I put a 5850 in and connected the monitor to that so I could boot into Windows with the 5970 in the middle PCIE slot and the device manager won't detect the 5970. Yes, I did put thermal paste on all the right places on the 5970, on both the top and the bottom of the card. How could the card have died just by changing the cooler?

The 5970 fan still spins up loudly for about 2 seconds just after I do a cold boot, before going quiet again.
10  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5970 doesn't want to overclock on: August 16, 2011, 05:25:34 AM
I've just overclocked both GPUs on my 5970 to 900MHz at 1.225V and I got BSOD within about 2 minutes. GPU temperatures are in the low 70s. What kind of overclocks are you guys getting with your 5970s?
11  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Furmark benchmarking on: August 16, 2011, 02:41:55 AM
I'm using Furmark to test my overclocks, should I select the "Xtreme burn in" option? Temperatures are not an issue as I have an Accelero cooler on it.
12  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5850 - can't change fan speed on: August 13, 2011, 01:08:28 AM
I've got a 5970 and 5850 together in the same computer. I use Afterburner to set a custom fan profile which works fine for the 5970. However, I can't change the fan speed for the 5850. I have selected the 5850 in Afterburner, and it just won't let me change the fan speed to either a custom fan profile or just a different speed at all. I have tried using CCC and I still can't change the fan speed on the 5850.

13  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5970 + 5850 won't work together on: August 12, 2011, 05:24:22 AM
I put my 5850 into the top PCIE slot (slot 1) and the 5970 into the lower slot (slot 2) on my P8P67 Pro.

I plugged the monitor into the 5970 and nothing comes up on the screen. I plugged the monitor into the 5850 and it works fine. I then removed both cards and put the 5970 into slot 1 and it worked fine. How can I get both cards to work on the same motherboard? I haven't tried to Crossfire them.

Putting the 5970 into slot 1 with the 5850 into slot 2 isn't going to work because the 5970 is a triple slot card.

When I had both cards in at the same time I tried plugging a monitor into the 5970 to see if it would work and it won't work.
14  Other / Off-topic / MSE + Windows Defender on: August 11, 2011, 11:42:17 AM
I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials at the moment, and I know that Windows Defender gets automatically disabled when MSE is installed. Is MSE all the security software I need, or do I need a separate firewall to provide my computer with adequate protection?
15  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Testing OC on: August 09, 2011, 11:15:18 AM
To test the overclock of a mining card do you just increase the clocks and run GUIMiner (or other mining app) until it crashes, and then reduce the clock frequency or increase voltage?
16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 6970 + 5850 + 5970 on: August 09, 2011, 05:28:25 AM
Long story short, I got a little over excited on an online auction site and bought an XFX 5970 with an Arctic Accelero Extreme cooler, an XFX 5850 and I also have my existing flashed 6970 2GB.

I bought these extra cards for Bitcoin mining. I don't think my PSU (Corsair TX950) has enough power to run all these cards under full load, so one of them is going to have to go because I can't afford a bigger PSU and my case only supports 1 PSU.

So I was thinking I could sell the 6970, and use the 5970 for mining and gaming and the 5850 only for mining. Or I could use the 5970 for full time mining and the 5850 for gaming, but the 5850 obviously has less power than the 5970. I could then Crossfire the 5970 + 5850 at a later stage if I wanted to.

The only problem with this is that I will still only have 1GB of usable GPU memory instead of the 2GB that I have with my 6970. I only plan on gaming at 1080p, but I think that future games in the next year or so might benefit from more than 1GB GPU memory.

What should I do?!
17  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Dual GPU cards on: August 09, 2011, 04:32:04 AM
If I were to mine with a 5970 then would I run 1 worker for both GPUs or is there any way to get them to run independently of each other?
18  Other / Beginners & Help / Yet another wallet.dat question on: August 08, 2011, 07:52:21 AM
I know that by default the wallet.dat is stored in C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\BitCoin

To secure this wallet, do I remove the wallet.dat (eg. ctrl + x the file) away from C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\BitCoin and then put it in an encrypted folder on multiple HDs to prevent theft?
If I do this then do I copy the wallet.dat back into the default folder to add BTC to the wallet, then remove the wallet again and encrypt the updated version?

So basically if I open the Bitcoin app, since there is no wallet.dat will it just show up as having 0 BTC unless I manually copy the wallet.dat back over to the default directory?
19  Other / Off-topic / Bank interest rates on: August 07, 2011, 09:46:35 AM
Quick question: For example, if a bank advertises a 5% interest rate on a particular savings account, and the inflation rate for that country is 4%, does that mean the overall interest gain over 1 year is (5% interest - 4% inflation) = 1%?

Or is the interest rate advertised calculated after inflation has been taken into account?
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Paypal on: August 05, 2011, 06:48:36 AM
Is it possible to sell my BTC and get the money paid into a Paypal account, then get Paypal to send the money to a New Zealand bank account? If so, what are the fees for doing this? I've had a look on the Paypal site but I can't find anything regarding this. I have a Visa card as well if this helps. The Paypal website says that the $NZ is on their list of supported currencies.
