Bitcoin could see a 47% correction, but some say it's going to $6,000
  • Bitcoin rallied to a fresh record high of over $2,700 on Thursday.
  • One analyst said that the cryptocurrency is close to a key level of $2,800 which could signal a correction.
  • The analyst told CNBC that the correction could see bitcoin fall as far as $1,470, marking a 46.5 percent decline.

Bitcoin is close to hitting a price that could see a 47 percent correction, according to one analyst, following a huge rally for the cryptocurrency that has led it to record highs.

On Thursday, bitcoin hit an all-time high of $2791.70, according to CoinDesk data, marking a 180 percent rally year-to-date.

Meanwhile, the number of long positions – those betting on bitcoin to rise – has risen 18.2 percent, while short positions – those thinking the cryptocurrency will fall – have declined 10 percent since the start of the week, showing that traders are getting more bullish on the cryptocurrency, according to data from Bitfinex.

One technical analyst, who looks at historical trading patterns to determine future price moves, told CNBC that the $2,800 could mark a level of resistance where the bitcoin pulls back. Bitcoin was as little as $9 off of that price on Thursday morning.

Nicola Duke, an analyst at analysis platform Forex Analytix, uses a form of technical analysis known as Fibonacci retracement, which looks at the peaks and troughs of previous "waves" or rallies and falls in bitcoin to get a sense of where the future price of an asset could move.

Bitcoin price established its new all-time high at $2,087 earlier today after surging past its previous all-time high set at $2,050, with demand toward Bitcoin rising from institutional investors in the US, Japan and South Korea.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is being traded in Japan and South Korea, the second and third largest Bitcoin exchange markets in the world, at around $2,350, at an 11 percent premium relative to the global average Bitcoin price and the price listed by US-based Bitcoin exchanges.

Analysts including Charles Hayter, the CEO of CryptoCompare, explained that the Japanese and South Korean Bitcoin exchange markets played a key role as the driving factor of Bitcoin’s recent price surge. In an interview with CNBC, Hayter stated:

4  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-05-2017]Bitcoin Is An Asset, Not A Currency[Forbes] on: May 18, 2017, 03:01:51 AM
Over the past year and a half Bitcoin has been on a spectacular run, rising in value 140% in 2016 and now an additional 49% in just the past month. This surge in value has invigorated Bitcoin backers convinced this boost in value makes Bitcoin a more credible currency, that it is a sign of the cryptocurrency’s strength. Yet the wild swings, both up and down, in the value of Bitcoin do not make it a more plausible substitute currency; they make it a speculative asset, a get-rich-quick scheme.

Is Bitcoin the currency of the future? No. There are two big problems with bitcoin as a currency: its value is unstable and its transaction processing is too slow.

The most important feature of a currency is that it be a stable store of value. This credo, ably explained by Steve Forbes here (among many places), is vital for a developing country economy to attract the investment it needs. Even in developed countries, as John Tamny explained here on Forbes.com, a stable currency value is the key to investment because those who invest are expecting a stream of future earnings to earn back their investment plus some profit. Instability in currency values mean that an investor cannot accurately predict the value of those future earnings. This uncertainty makes investments less valuable; thus, less investment happens.

5  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Novo ciberataque é "muito maior" que WannaCry, dizem especialistas on: May 17, 2017, 04:51:21 PM

7  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-05-13]The strange mix of reasons why bitcoin has soared to all-time record on: May 13, 2017, 03:34:55 PM
Bitcoins traded at over $1,800 late last week, marking a new all-time high. To understand how significant this is, even in the volatile bitcoin market, the cryptocurrency’s previous record price of $1,165 took three years to topple, which happened in February this year when bitcoin traded at $1,210. That milestone has now been crushed just two months later. What’s going on?

Be careful with your price comparisons.

by Lorcan Roche Kelly

With a 94 percent year-to-date gain, and a single "coin" now worth $1,843, bitcoin has been on a helluva run lately.

The increase in the cost of the massively-volatile electronic tokens has led to many comparisons with that other favorite outsider "currency'' — gold — recently.

True, a unit of Bitcoin passed the dollar value of one troy ounce of gold this year, and is now more than $600 higher.

9  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-05-08]Bitcoin hits $1,600 for the first time on: May 09, 2017, 02:36:54 PM
Bitcoin hits $1,600 for the first time and one investor says it could rally to $4,000 in a few months

The bitcoin price. could rise to about $4,000 within 8 to 14 months, investors say.
The recent price rise has been driven by positive developments around the underlying technology with a rival cryptocurrency called litecoin.

Bitcoin is "fully valued" and could see a pullback in the short term after hitting $1,600 for the first time on Monday, according to one investor, but the price could go as high as $4,000 over the next 14 months.

The cryptocurrency has been on an upward move since April and was trading around $1,575.52 by early afternoon trading in London after hitting an all-time high $1,601.05 during morning trade, according to the Coindesk bitcoin price index.

In the last 30 days, bitcoin has risen over 33 percent.

10  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-04-20] Why some Venezuelans have turned to bitcoin mining on: April 20, 2017, 10:14:57 PM
In crisis-ridden Venezuela, mining this digital currency is providing a lifeline but comes with the risk of arrest.

In 2005, Randy Brito, aged 14, and his family fled Venezuela.

Back then, the country's oil-based economy was still booming. But under President Hugo Chavez's socialist agenda, widespread nationalisations and takeovers of private enterprises compelled many middle-class families such as Brito's to leave.

In 2011, while browsing the internet, Brito discovered the world of bitcoin on a dedicated forum.

A post described "bitcoin mining", a fully decentralised process where "miners" compete by making their computing power available to process and confirm transactions coming from a peer-to-peer network.
