62  Other / Archival / Why can't I edit the wiki? on: January 28, 2013, 03:51:40 AM
I have contributed to the wiki in the past. However, now I cannot even edit my userpage. Why is this? Can someone with proper permissions grant me these privileges? If even registered, contributing users are barred from editing, then it isn't much of a wiki.

Nevermind: It seems the wiki has put a barrier to editing so as to stop spambots.
63  Economy / Speculation / If 2013 repeated history... on: January 26, 2013, 01:00:34 AM
The values in the chart below would occur if 2013 decided to best match the patterns of 2011 and 2012, as well as the latter part of 2010. All values are in Mt. Gox USD. The spring slump, summer surge, fall correction, and winter renewal are clearly seen.
64  Other / Meta / Cap image width on: January 23, 2013, 03:30:33 AM
Add to the stylesheet:

Code:
img {
  max-width: 100%
}

This rescales all images to the maximum width possible without a scrollbar. We all think scrollbars are annoying, but so are downsized images by overzealous posters trying to avoid them. This seems to be a simple solution.

I would buy myself some headphones.

Continuing on this theme, find things available for sale for just one BTC or less. Take a picture or post a link. It should be fun to monitor what a BTC can buy over time. Advertising and self-promotion are both perfectly fine!

67  Other / Meta / Fatawa for forum etiquette on: January 06, 2013, 10:34:54 PM
We've had pleas for civility, Atlan rules for the forum, and various other proposals for order in the forum. Although I prefer a democratic, free forum where no rigid rules are in place (aside from, of course, legal considerations), I also find it helpful to incorporate general techniques that facilitate cooperation and constructive collaboration, rather than groupthink or libel (and yes, forum writings are libel and not slander).

As such, I intend this thread to be a collection of "fatawa", which are distinct from "laws" in that they are issued by the governing body. If you have a pet peeve about nonconstructive behaviour on this forum, please issue a "fatwa". I hope this thread to be education to all of us, even if we do not agree. The term "fatwa" originates from Arabic (فتوى), is properly pluralized "fatawa", and although it does not have a direct English translation, it means something akin to "opinion" or "advice", but more formally. Although fatawa are often in relation to Islam, they do not necessarily have to be—fatawa can just as easily be used secularly. Fatawa are not rules, but rather opinions of the issuer that promote healthy societies.

To start off, my fatwa for the day is inspired by recent events.

Fatwa 2013-01-06
I believe that BitcoinTalk members should respond, not react.

The recent events involving controversial user torac have brought the importance of this to light. Rather than remaining calm, devising a solution, and informing his customers accordingly, torac elected to enter a temper tantrum, in the process destroying whatever reputation he had. His reaction was rushed and nonconstructive. It was a waste of time to react, as it did not grant him any concessions—in fact, it did the opposite.

Anger is a powerful emotion, and displaying it causes other powerful emotions. Many healthy threads degenerate because of angry and rushed remarks.

To avoid this in the future, angry BitcoinTalk users should first consider the situation, take time off, and prepare a civil response that promotes positive and constructive communication. Well thought-out responses invite intelligent counterresponses, while rushed reactions only invite emotional flame-wars. This common childhood moral is equally applicable to an online forum.
68  Other / Off-topic / Should I join Facebook? on: December 01, 2012, 07:06:58 PM
Here's what my position of Facebook used to be: giving all this information to one company is unethical and I should never do it. But as time passes, it becomes increasingly evident how hypocritical my position is. After all, I have a Google account, and that is even more information in one place, and I have a Microsoft account which is pretty hefty too. Although I support decentralization, this position is becoming increasingly difficult to defend. My personal friends have urged me to sign up for Facebook numerous times, and I think it is time to reconsider my position. But I remain indecisive.

So I ask: should I do it?

(P.S.: Obviously, this isn't the most important thing going on right now. I don't expect Facebook to be around in a few years, and even if I decide to join I probably will not use it to much extent either. I know that it can be extremely damaging to employment chances, but on the other hand it can also help things. So either way, my life isn't going to change.)
69  Economy / Speculation / Price record broken! on: November 29, 2012, 02:47:08 AM
For the first time in Bitcoin history, the six-month trailing average price will go over 10 US$ in a few days. Currently, we've already broken the record set over a year ago:

Consistently high prices are healthy, and hopefully this trend will continue.
70  Economy / Service Discussion / Print services with [btc]? on: November 16, 2012, 01:43:30 AM
Hello all!

I'm interested in printing one (1) sheet of paper approximately A3 or A2 in size, in colour and on laminated paper. Is there any Bitcoin-based service that offers this?
71  Other / Meta / Suggestion: More watchlists on: November 13, 2012, 09:58:08 PM
Sometimes, one watchlist doesn't cut it. I might want to watch the Press board for one watchlist, have all the threads I posted in in another, and have a third watchlist for assorted random threads. Would it be possible to allow use of more watchlists, ideally an arbitrary number of them?

Going further, maybe shared watchlists can also be useful (for companies making sure customer service finds all complaints, and doesn't waste time rereading complaints). And I would also love filters for the watchlists: have it, for example, only accept threads started by pirateat40.

Practical idea, or just wishful thinking?
72  Other / Meta / Open applications for moderatorship: a big leap forward on: November 08, 2012, 02:23:41 AM
Disclaimer: I am not interested in becoming a moderator, as I simply do not have the time.

I noticed smoothie's and SaltySpitoon's public moderator application threads recently. I must say, this is a great step forward for transparency from the BitcoinTalk admins. I propose that we have a moderator application process, where any established members can publicly apply for the status. Although the admins will still have the final decision, the increased transparency will allow their power to be kept in check.

Thoughts?
73  Other / Off-topic / Congrats Obama on: November 07, 2012, 04:14:50 AM
Unless something extremely weird happens, Obama has won his second term. I personally prefer him to Romney, but find both options detestable. Either way, we can all sleep well now knowing that there won't be another election this big in four years.
74  Other / Meta / BitcoinTalk's biggest issue... on: October 19, 2012, 12:38:05 AM
...is posts like these.

European Union is run by homosexuals. They are installing electric heating in new government buildings here that consume about 2KW per hour per apartment. In comparison HD6990 consumes only 1/6 of that under load. And they also banned 100W light bulbs.

While the moderators are busy censoring opinions they don't support, arbitrarily applying scammer tags, and spreading FUD with their powers, these posts are let be. And this one isn't even the worst one: constantly, sexism, homophobia, racism, and other blatantly indecent posts flood these forums like rabbits. While BitcoinTalk has certainly been fun, it has now been corrupted time and again. Unless the balance of power is restored, it will eventually pass the point of no return, the point at which the forum would have degraded to be lower than 4chan and the likes.
75  Other / Politics & Society / Why the free market helps the environment on: October 17, 2012, 01:45:06 AM
This is what happens when protectionism and government intervention occur: a tax on solar panels.

We already well know the the US puts twice as much money into oil than sustainable energy, spends millions on increasing oil production in the US colony in Mesopotamia (Iraq), and continues to mass-produce weapons for the military, polluting the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. It was no surprise that the government just doesn't care that our planet will become a forsaken garbage-filled steaming wasteland. But this is just ridiculous: taxing solar panels?

The rationale given was that China doesn't have a free market. Well, guess what? Neither does the States. They can't get a free market until they stop this oil-run government from intervening in the market.
76  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin Foundation on: October 13, 2012, 05:08:50 PM
This has occurred in the past with Bitcoin Foundation: Gavin unfairly maintains its post in Bitcoin Discussion, with a sticky dedicated to it, while competing foundations are promptly and correctly moved out.

This is not entirely true.

Actually the only true part is that the threads started within 24hours of Gavin's announcement I moved to Service Discussion, fully expecting to move his announcement to Service announcements as well. But I wanted to hear his agreement first, which I didn't get so I asked theymos who told me this:

Gavin's thread definitely belongs in Bitcoin Discussion because this is an innovative new type of "service" and the announcement is significant to the Bitcoin ecosystem as a whole. I might have left discussion about the Foundation in Bitcoin Discussion too, but moving it to Service Discussion is fine, especially since Bitcoin Discussion was getting filled with Foundation-related topics.

As you can see, there was no censorship and ever since I got this instruction from theymos I left any thread that raised an important concern about Bitcoin Foundation in the Bitcoin Discussion. You can ask Atlas about that. And as far as I know no threads other than a poll were made sticky about Bitcoin Foundation.

Also any competing foundation threads were left in Bitcoin Discussion, even an announcement of an announcement of a competing idea that turned out to be nothing really was left there.

I suggest if you are going to raise issues, at least be honest and list complaints based on facts, not on fiction.

Best Regards,
hazek
Please do not accuse me of spreading fiction. I have monitored the Bitcoin Discussion boards for some time now, and my words were the truth and nothing but the truth.

1.
hazek, you're really annoying me.

First, you edited my OP and broke all of the links changing .org to .com.
Then you sent me a PM asking if it would be ok to move this thread to Service Discussion.  WTF?  If discussion of the Foundation isn't a good topic for the main Discussion forum what is?

Now you spout off about 'Gavin this, Gavin that.'

It isn't easy to piss me off, but, I'm sorry, you're really pissing me off. Bounties?  Really?  Point me to a successful security-critical open source project where bounties pay the rent.

I haven't tried kickstarter-like fundraising?  http://blockchain.info/address/17XvU95PkpDqXAr8ieNpYzSdRDRJL55UQ8  is the address for the Bitcoin Testing Project, which has received a grand total of 72 BTC, which isn't nearly enough to pay a QA grunt, let alone a QA lead.

You say "why change, Bitcoin has been working great for me!"

It hasn't been working great for me; I'm frustrated by the lack of resources and all of the distractions I have to deal with as the unelected, un-asked-for de-facto leader of this amazing experiment. I'm excited about the Foundation, because it is bringing together dedicated, effective people who all want Bitcoin to succeed.
Emphasis mine. It does not take more than this to prove that Gavin maintains the Foundation thread in Bitcoin Discussion. He neither allows the community to decide nor follows guidelines about thread placement.

2. This thread, although not anymore, was previously stickied and remained so even after I reported it. Had the thread been about, e.g., "What's your opinion on Mt. Gox", it could not have remained in Bitcoin Discussion, let alone being stickied there.

3. The precedent, and thereby the case law states, that the Foundation thread be moved out.

These, like Bitcoin Foundation, are services, and have been moved out (rightfully).

4.

Also any competing foundation threads were left in Bitcoin Discussion, even an announcement of an announcement of a competing idea that turned out to be nothing really was left there.
Please provide evidence of this.
77  Other / Off-topic / What does your username mean? on: October 06, 2012, 04:09:43 PM
Dree = English word (to endure)
12 = Number commonly found in European tradition

Dree12 = Combination of two random parts.

What does your username break down into?
78  Other / Meta / Moderator inaction and bias on: September 29, 2012, 10:43:57 PM
A while ago now, I reported the Bitcoin Foundation thread as being inappropriate for Bitcoin Discussion, and doubtlessly many others have done the same. Legal, Service Announcements, and Project Development are perfectly good areas to place this. In case these reports were ignored, I reported the thread again. However, it is becoming evident that mods in charge have a conflict of interest. Had anyone else created a "foundation", it would promptly be moved out of Bitcoin Discussion, even before the first report, and even without 800+ posts on the subject.

I hope this public thread will allow the forum to call into question the integrity of our Global Moderators, and force them to moderate without bias in the future.
79  Other / Meta / [BUG] Ignore fails on posts made after starting reply on: September 27, 2012, 08:33:17 PM
After beginning to reply, clicking the post button, seeing the new posts red text, and scrolling back to the Post button, I noticed that the new posts while I was posting are not ignored. Posts made before I clicked "reply" are correctly ignored, displaying "Show/Hide". Posts recently made are shown and no "Show/Hide" button is present. This is extremely annoying, because the recent posts are also just below the "Post" button.

If I can make a feature suggestion as well, I would suggest the red text not show up if the only new posts were from ignored members.
80  Economy / Speculation / In the horizon: difficulty crashes! on: September 26, 2012, 08:09:06 PM
I don't usually write posts about difficulty, being the secular (as in, separation of mining from price) person I tend to be. However, with the upcoming buzz on the reward dropping, I figure I'll give my take.

Mining will become insanely profitable weeks before, and a while after, the reward halving.

Why? Well, I see three reasons:

  • Miners shutting off or liquidating. This is already evident, as the mining, speculation, and goods subfora are buzzing with activity.
  • Price appreciating. Many speculators are likely waiting for November to buy in before selling in time for the Christmas dip. For weeks before the dropping, and one or two weeks after, the price will be insanely high.
  • Delayed ASIC No ASIC until 2013. Enough said.

Naturally, with lower difficulty and higher price, mining should be insanely profitable. Mine away!
