24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin marketing lies on: June 03, 2013, 10:13:59 PM
I just heard Jeff Berwick or someone similar say: "with Bitcoin, you can send money totally anonymously from anywhere to anywhere for no fee and the currency is fungible down to 8 decimal places."

That quote cointains 3 lies.

I don't like lying and I think we should offensively discuss the issues that are fundamental to these lies and the fact these lies are being made (which is being done, don't get me wrong).

  • Bitcoin is not anonymous... why is that not a problem?
  • Bitcoin transactions are not free... why is that not a problem?
  • Bitcoin doesn't scale easily... why is that not a problem?

Now I know these issues are being discussed at length and widely on this forum and this thread is not for doing that.

This thread is for asking: What's the easiest to understand story that isn't fundamentally misleading we can give to alleviate these (perceived) problems in the eye of the journalist and the general public?

29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Casascius Coins: Am I doing "Proof of Existence" right? on: April 11, 2013, 11:51:30 AM
Mike Caldwell recently suggested to resellers (and others I guess) to insert a hash of a scan of coins into the blockchain to make checking for counterfeits easier. That way on can, by comparing the specifics of the coin with the scan and then verifying the hash of the scan has been in the blockchain at time x, prove that a particular coin has existed at a certain point in time.

This will only work for products I produce from today forward, but here is an idea you can do right now.  The counterfeiting hasn't happened yet.  Go throw your current stash of Casascius Coins on a scanner, scan a photo of them, take a 160-bit hash of the file, and then work that hash into the block chain somehow.  Convert the hash to a bitcoin address and send a satoshi to it (my Bitcoin Address Utility can do this, for example).  Your photo with its supporting hash in the block chain will be publicly verifiable proof that the coin in your photo existed today.

I want to do this for the 1/2 BTC coins I will at some point resell to add some value and am designed a process for this.

Best have it community-reviewed?

So here's an example:

(click for pdf)

This "certificate" is not really necessary, but it nicely wraps up the relevant information and I can give it to customers in printed form (adds value).

What is necessary to be able to verify existence of coin at specified time is the scan itself.

Here's the TIFF of the scan.

Here's the relevant data from the "Certificate" for easier access (you could copy/paste from pdf also I guess):

  • coin address: 1CsWiHgjQHHAfBhnfuxjLgLjjwh1Z6YN5E
  • scan hash: 7d12543c7f5f42e2aa18e1af1c2937a1ac33ca180f8c074446f4ab49fb6a1c8a
  • bitcoin address of scan hash: 1M92yAUsswQ5XfiPYpTyveaLvsQrYaSK6w
  • sent 1 satoshi to that address, tx_id: 11ac4700a5021579a8d5510911b3d33417b8075f5b657a389cfb6ac934aa65f9

Specific Question I have

  • Suggestions for changes in wording of the "proof of existence"
  • Should I put "Certificate" on top?
  • I used bitaddress.org to go from hash -> address, can I do that? Is there a better way that doesn't require any tools (I looked at casascius tools but it seemed more cumbersome to use than bitaddress.org).
  • Quality of the scan ok? (I forgot to clean the scanner glass, is that a problem?)
  • The way I made the tx ok?
  • Is TIFF a good choice or could I just as well go with something lossy like png or jpg to save on size?
  • ...

Looking forward to your input.

(I plan to share any scripts I write to automate this process and maybe also the certificate template which I plan to improve).
(In case someone wants to make a template, please use SVG, so a script can easily fill it with data and image and render it to pdf)

31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Is the goal of milliBit parity irrational? on: April 08, 2013, 05:10:15 AM
I think it's time to talk about bitcoin price in terms of the milliBit. (has a better name emerged?).

With bitcoin price now at $0.17 we are looking towards parity with the dollar.

Is that irrational? I think not.

Why? Because - to borrow a phrase from the silver crowd - the fundamentals are as solid as ever: Bitcoin really is a viable alternative to the global banking and monetary system (which requires trust that is continually being eroded - for a reason). It's a viable alternative to both the USD and paypal. Plus: the bulk of the population is still standing on the sidelines or wholly ignorant to even the problem, much less to Bitcoin being the solution.

I can currently see one possible danger that has the potential to stop Bitcoin in its roots: regulation, i.e. a Bitcoin prohibition.

How can we avoid something like a Bitcoin prohibition? It's quite simple really: if enough of the population have endorsed Bitcoin, are trusting and using it (for saving and payment), then a negative regulation is likely to be rejected by the constituents of the democracies in the west (where such regulation is most probably going to be tried to be introduced first).

I don't want 1 hedge fund to invest 100 Million USD, I'd rather like to see 10 Million people invest 10 USD each. That's much more powerful and a lot safer and it's going to probably reduce volatility by a lot.

So why do I think we're falling behind on general population adoption (and buying) of bitcoin? Because I hear it from all my friends: "I'm not buying, Bitcoin is too expensive now, it's in a bubble and I'll buy when it dips back to $30". $170 really does sound expensive, doesn't it? Does $0.17 sound expensive? No!

So here's what I'll do: I'm going to keep telling people about Bitcoin (not pester them to invest, just tell them what it is and why I love it). I'm going to explain to them why it's a viable alternative to the global banking and monetary system and why. I'm going to tell them how it works if they want to know. I'm going to tell them - to borrow another phrase from a metal stacker - to become their own central bank.

And I'm also going to tell them that just 21,000 milliBits will represent a 100 millionth of the wealth on earth should Bitcoin be successful in it's endeavor to conquer the world and become the no. 1 currency. I'm going to tell them that the global monetary base is about 2,000 trillion Dollars (correct me, please). A hundred millionth of that is 20,000,000 Dollars. I'm going to tell them that 21,000 milliBits might some day be worth as much as 2 million Dollars are worth today.

(of course I'll use EUR and with some people I'll use 2,100 milliBits)

33  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Could mining come back to CPUs? on: April 06, 2013, 06:20:42 PM
I've been thinking wether or not a cpu manufacturer could come up with the idea of assigning some die space to putting a bitcoin mining unit on one of their products.

What would be the cost for them and could it be a good-enough feature to increase sales by enough to make it viable?

35  Economy / Service Discussion / bitcoin-central.net say they detected a security-breach on: April 01, 2013, 06:31:21 PM

36  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / make no mistake... this is a revolution on: March 30, 2013, 08:38:15 PM
make no mistake... this is a revolution

This is what I want to tell the power-elite and their puppets, the bankers and politicians:

YOU FUCKED UP,
THANK YOU.
WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE!

We are taking things in our own hands now: we are introducing a new kind of money. A free market money. We welcome all other sorts of money to enter the competition, the free market for moneys.

Ah, Bitcoin: It really is the peoples money. As Gregory Mannarino says: you have to be your own central bank. And that's what Bitcoin does: it enables us, the poeple, to be our own central banks, to take control of the medium of exchange and store of value we use in our lives. This doesn't mean we control the money supply in any direct way in the case of Bitcoin... it just means it's outside anyones reach to control it... a sound money.

Us bitcoiners, we are not fighting the establishment. We live by the rules as far as we can and are not aggressive. We just happen to use our own money, thanks.

Consider Bitcoin: Bitcoin is not about accumulating wealth, it's about freedom: freedom of economic interaction and freedom of speech (those are interdependant: you can't have one without the other).

Consider the economy: The economy consists of the people participating in it, not some corporate monopolists. So the performance of the economy should be measured in the happyness and well-being of the people, not some aggregate value called GDP.

Consider our current monetary system: The central banks of this world are executing a "race to the bottom" between their FIAT-Currencies in order to keep GDP up (among other things), causing severe distortions in the otherwise functioning economy. Misallocations of capital continually produce bubbles and false price signals. Saving (setting aside money for later) is made impossible, hence money is not withheld from immediate spending (not because of the immediate need for products/services, but because of artificial inlfation). Manipulatd interest rates send false signals to the economy to do the wrong thing. The economy is sick... sick with a bad kind of money.

Consider how far this fiat-money-regime has gotten us already: there are puppets of the power-elite installed in parliaments in Europe. A blatant disregard of democratic values. These "technocrats" are not elected by the people of the respective countries, yet there they are shaping policy, legislature and the regulatory environment in general. Manipulating the rules that govern the police and the military. They put these puppets there to execute their will. They just do it with no legitimation whatsoever for us to swallow. They don't care about us. They don't represent us. Hell, they don't even respect us. They don't care.

But I care. I represent myself and respect myself and care about myself. And I think most of you care about yourselves and represent and respect yourselves. If speaking to a broader audience I could probably say: Some of you just don't know what to do at this point. Some of you might not quite understand the Internet and Bitcoin as what they are: a tool to be used by the people to take back control. And I'm not talking about the internet of Facebook and Google, those have become surveillance tools. I'm talking about the internet that nurtures creativity and cultural development. I'm talking about the internet that enables you to find like-minded people distributed around the globe. I'm talking about the internet that allows anyone to publish without fear. I'm talking about the internet that allows people to have communication in private and the internet that allows us to share what we want to share. I'm talking about the internet that allows everyone to give money to anyone else... in private, with no oversight, regulation or accountability. I think this is a basic human right: the right to engage in voluntary [economic, social, sexual, intellectual or whatever kind of] interaction with other poeple on a self-chosen basis that is not governed by anyone but the participants themselves.

Consider what the regime will do next: Surveillance of every aspect of your life is prevalent. The war propaganda machinery has been started. At the end of most fiat currency regimes, there is a war. It's used (among other things) to cover up the scam and keep it going one more time.

I don't want there to be a fucking 3rd world war... and I don't think most of you do, either.

I think there's a way to avoid it: if we transition to using types of money that are not controlled by the power-elite quickly enough, they simply wont be able to finance a war.

State controlled capitalism is called fascism. What do we call capital-controlled statism? Well whatever it is: it's sucking the motherfucking life out of us and if continued will end badly.

The era of the Nationstate is ending... The era of the corporatocracy is ending,... actually the era of aristocracy or whatever the structure of the current power-elite is, is ending.

This is the era of the people. We are now in the unique situation to be able to take back and defend our basic human rights, for example the right to privacy both of individuals and of groups they might form. The Internet and cryptography empower us to do this.
The right to privacy, both in being and communication, is a privilege I am not willing to give up and one that I want everybody to have.
Cryptography and the net give us the power to exercise this right... we just need to actually do it.

I don't want to be a serf,.. a slave, told by some institutionalized asshole how to act and think. I don't think you do, either. I don't want to be controlled by mass-channeled propaganda. And I don't think you do, either. I don't want to be constantly monitored in all my moves and analyzed in all my emotional state and thoughts. I don't want to be controlled, I want to be free. And I think you want to be free, too.

So what to do?

Here are some rules I wish I would live by:
  • keep educating people about bitcoin and what it really is, freedom of speech, freedom of economic interaction.
  • try to live a prosperous life. seriously: look after yourself, then look after others.
  • don't work for or support more than necessary the government, police, military or monopolist corporation.
  • actively select the sources of your information, talk to people, connect to their hearts.
  • be open to everyone but critical of any information you receive
  • keep the internet alive and as free as possible for as many people as possible
  • use Bitcoin as much as possible
  • offer goods and services for bitcoin
  • help others to understand and accept Bitcoin
  • encourage others (and yourself) to trade, perform services and/or make contracts among individuals
  • don't evangelize Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not a religion, just the currently best solution to a problem. Emphasize on currency competition and freedom of the people.
  • sell your bitcoins to anyone who wants to buy, but don't forget to re-stock
  • don't follow a leader, think for yourself
  • think... and feel... and be....
  • we are one world, all connected,... act accordingly and responsibly.
  • be not afraid, the greatest fear we have is fear itself.

All these cryptographic functions do not ensure your personal well-being per se.
All this digital gold does not make everyone equally wealthy,..
But what this cryptographic type of money does is to enable a functioning economy that serves the people who constitute it.
Those other problems will have to be fought in a differnt arena, not that of money.

I truly believe Bitcoin and the Internet empower us to ensure our freedom, well-being and prosperity of both the human culture/society and also of each of the individuals constituting it.

We just need to act accordingly...

We need to be the change we want to see!
37  Economy / Speculation / The coming change at mtGox and its implications on: March 29, 2013, 09:37:53 AM
Last night I finally understood what's with the gox engine lag:

Quote from: #mtgox
<MagicalTux> sturles: if you need realtime data, use socket.io
<molec> MagicalTux, "realtime" Huh ;-)
<MagicalTux> molec: socket.io feed is actually realtime
<molec> MagicalTux, so it's the engine that can't cope?
<MagicalTux> right now, yep
<MagicalTux> because it needs to do too many checks
<MagicalTux> we are working on changing the way all this works
<MagicalTux> but it needs a *lot* of changes
<molec> MagicalTux, I think you're doing something wrong. I can't see why it's hard... what's the reason?
<molec> MagicalTux, might be my ignorance, but I did quite a few dbs. I might be overlooking some problem,... maybe security-related?
<MagicalTux> molec: we need to change the way users place orders to solve this
<molec> MagicalTux, in what way?
<MagicalTux> disallow users to place orders they can't fill
<molec> MagicalTux, +1. oh...
<molec> MagicalTux, it's dawning on me
<MagicalTux> and disallow users to withdraw balance required for open orders
<molec> MagicalTux, you have to trickle down the whole order list to set invalid/open status
<molec> MagicalTux, go do it!
<MagicalTux> right now each time a user balance change (trade, etc) we need to recheck all his open orders
<molec> MagicalTux, I see. and that gives you concurrency issues like hell
<MagicalTux> we're working on solving this, but changing the way the site works need to be done right
<MagicalTux> so we're doing a lot of tests first
<molec> MagicalTux, I agree. don't haste
<MagicalTux> well
<MagicalTux> we need to haste, because current volumes cannot be handled anymore by current engine
<MagicalTux> we made it faster (no more 30min delays), but it still has troubles with large moves

What this means is: you can't have any order in the book that aren't backed by funds. Currently "un-backed" orders will have status "invalid" and wont show in the public order book, but they can exist and once funds become available to back the order, it will change its status to "open".

What are the implications of this?

Currently, in a uptrend market like we have had for a long time, when price rises and people who have invalid bids get their asks filled, fund become available and (some of) the bids of that user appear automatically in the orderbook. As I see it, this mechanism is rather bullish, because it keeps the bid-side of the book nicely filled up.

Once these invalid order cannot exist any more due to the change, the bid-side will not fill up like that any more. This might be interpreted by the market participant as a weakness of the bulls, especiall if the participants are not yet fully aware of the change.

On the bright side: we can expect the trading engine to perform much better.

I measured the density of my silver/gold coins unsing this setup

EDIT: a better method was suggested by mintymark and yielded better results.

these are the results:

Here's how I did it:

  • Weigh the coin itself
  • Put container with water and the coin attached to string on scale and reset scale to 0
  • pull on string, effectively measuring weight of coin minus weight of displaced water
  • calculate density (assuming water density is 1g/cm³) by dividing weight of coin by volume of coin (equals volume of displaced water)

I used a cheap scale I ordered from Hong Kong for around €5. Yet the results seem to be quite reassuring (error margin (EDIT: of my measurements) seems to be around 1%-2%)
