3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [botnet down] Security researchers kill Kelihos @ArsTechnica on: March 28, 2012, 07:02:44 PM
116 000 immobilized zombie machines is definitely good news.

Does it come as any surprise that the bulk of the machine population were running the dated Windows XP?
Neglected, unpatched and unprotected machines are not only a risk to their owners but to the Internet as a whole.
If only the owners were technical enough to realize that...
4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Kepler architecture overview @Real World Tech on: March 23, 2012, 05:30:54 PM
A very competent - if brief - overview of the Kepler architecture basics.
An excellent read which goes well with a cup of espresso.
5  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Antec HCP Platinum 1000W is a very decent GOLD unit on: March 22, 2012, 10:10:53 AM
The ugly marketing tricks are back, this time courtesy of Antec.
While boasting 80 PLUS Platinum certification on the box, by the vendor's own admission efficiency of only 87 to 90% (i.e. Gold) is to be expected from the retail units.

In other words, a superior hand-picked sample was sent for 80 PLUS certification.
While it is the manufacturer's prerogative to do so, such attitude towards the end users should be pointed out and stigmatized as unfair competition.

Other manufacturers whose units had reached unexpectedly high certification levels (e.g. SilverStone or Corsair with their HX850) opted to stick with the lower certification level as more representative of the typical efficiency of their products, as a fair play gesture.

Priced at $260, the Antec HCP 1000W is tied with the renowned Seasonic Platinum 1000W and significantly more expensive than most Gold certified units(1).
In fact, it is even more expensive than the Kingwin LZP 1000W meeting its rated (Platinum) efficiency, and merely $6 less expensive than the Seasonic-manufactured XFX ProSeries 1250W.

While Delta-manufactured Antec HCP 1000W is without a doubt an excellent PSU well worth recommending, a store-bought unit is very unlikely to reach the 80 PLUS Platinum efficiency levels.
Apples to apples, Antec - doling out the big bucks for a mining PSU I'd really prefer the unit to be able to meet its advertized efficiency.

(1) there are five links here, mind you.
6  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO images on: March 01, 2012, 01:29:53 AM
are now publicly available.
Coupled with AMD drivers(1), it could make a free Windows-based mining platform.

Anyone interested in playing with this?

Notes:
(1) Latest version of AMD drivers for Windows 8 Preview doest not support hd7000 series cards yet. 7xxx owners please stay tuned, update should be available within a couple of weeks.
7  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / GPU chip degradation on: February 16, 2012, 12:16:38 PM
My ASUS 6950 DCII 1GB seems to be affected at last(1).

The card has been hashing since early September. Since late October the core speed was 942 MHz resulting in 389 MHash/s.
945 MHz would drop the card on its knees in a matter of hours. 942 MHz was stable for months... until this week.
The card hung a few days ago and twice yesterday.
935 MHz has been stable for a day now...

I was fully aware that setting the "cruise speed" so close to unstable clocks left me with no buffer zone - I did that more as an experiment into degradation progression than anything else.

I never liked this particular card much for its forced 125 MHz memdiff and locked core voltage resulting in power use of about 150W and temps in the high 70s.
Still, the degradation rate has been slower than I expected it to be.

Once the card is incapable of pulling 900 MHz I'll give it a second life in some gamer's rig provided no other issues emerge.

Just a data point for anyone interested in the subject.

Notes:
(1) Unless its just the latest cgminer pushing it harder than previous versions. The hash speed hasn't changed so I don't think the miner is responsible for the loss of stability.
I don't feel like digging deeper into the matter or trying different kernels, I'll just drop clocks until stability is regained.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Attack? on: January 02, 2012, 10:57:47 AM
Half an hour ago, this was happening:

What alerted me most was the fact that the forums were down.
Has there been some attack?

Is Bitcoinwatch broken - which I really hope it is - showing VERY low block generation per hour?
