2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [XPM] mtrlt Primecoin OCL GPU Miner, Communication problem ??? on: August 28, 2013, 02:07:48 PM
I've no stake in the game but I think when you're months late communicating efficiently should be the least you can do.

mtrlt has blocked his two thread to comments and the last update was :

New update!!!

The GPU primality tester works now! Finally.. Testing the first, very much unoptimized version on testnet, a HD6990 seems to be about 2x as fast as a Phenom x6 1055T. On mainnet, there's still the problem of having too few candidates left after sieving, which leads to GPU underutilization.

I'll write a better update in the morning, it's 4 AM..

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=273637.msg3008508#msg3008508

Correct me if I'm wrong but how is a 100% increase on a GPU (HD6990) that is 400% more expensive than a Phenom x6 CPU an improvement in the slightest ?

Unoptimized preliminary results,, But still... any real world expectation at this time ?

4  Economy / Economics / HSBC closing embassies and consulates bank accounts all around the world. on: August 06, 2013, 07:49:09 PM

The London-based bank said in a statement the missions  which they consider ‘commercial customers’  are a risk because they fear the money can end up in a money laundering or drug cartel.
Quote
"We were served by HSBC for 22 years, and when they threw us like that, it hit like a bombshell," John Bielawa, an official at Papua New Guinea’s High Commission said.

... Nobody should take for granted access to banking services .

Where will that end ? Could Bitcoiners eventually be at risks of being tagged as possible money launderer from a single transfer from/to a BTC exchange ?
5  Economy / Speculation / What happened with btccharts.com ??? dead for the last 3 days on: July 27, 2013, 11:13:10 PM
There was a thread about it but it got locked.

Any update ?
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [XPM] XPM per kPPS per days = ? 0.2 ... The mining market need a metric !!! on: July 27, 2013, 02:09:30 AM
0.201 XPM / k PPS / Days  +/- 5%

With difficulty 9.277 and HP8 optimization ,,,

Network currently estimated at ~65 000 000 PPS

Test made with 3.8 mPPS for 10 hours, cost 700$... result = not profitable ...
 not going to run large scale experiment every time I want to know the profitability factor.

Do we have anything better ? And how does it scale with difficulty ?

Update : I've been told getchainspermin is more accurate,, Thus...

0.201 XPM / 1.84 chain per minute / Days

or

0.1087 XPM / ChainPerMin / Days

*Based on 10000 hrs at 7 CPM @ 9.27 (HP8)

The bitcoin algorithm doesn't map well onto the Epiphany archtiecture and there are already a lot of a few really fast bitcoin mining ASICs out there. However, Parallella should do well on the next coin mining craze called "litecoin". @solardiz at Openwall (the good guys behind John the Ripper password cracker) are looking into it.

8  Other / Meta / ... Company specific Child board in /Custom hardware/ on: June 22, 2013, 08:54:54 AM
Given how important mining is to the bitcoin ecosystem, how hard of a task it is to produce ASIC chips and how much discussion is being generated by each of them I think the community could only benefits from allowing company specific boards.

Requirements :
  • Being requested by company owner
  • Produce own chips
  • Proven working devices

Benefits vs creating own website :
  • Clean the parent /Custom hardware/ sub, making place for new development
  • Benefits from bitcointalk's reputation system.
  • Lower barrier of entry for customer support.
(not all business have the resources available to run a safe and functional forum)

11  Other / Meta / Saving of sent PM in Outbox by default ! on: April 26, 2013, 04:47:20 PM
There is already a feature to delete post

I really don't see the point of deleting everything by default.

(I'd think less than 1% of post would prefer not to have traces left for the rare event of a compromised account.)

13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / FeatherCoin launch fair or "Pre-mined" ? discussion, no tech support request. on: April 17, 2013, 07:24:25 PM

... The joys of a Litecoin fork, are that we get to use Scrypt and follow a release designed for specifically for it.  There are a lot of Bitcoin forks but with the advent of ASIC miners we are starting to see how much havoc they can cause. To give us GPU miners shelter we need Scrypt based coins, as, in my opinion, Litecoin is currently the only valid one. Litecoin being as mature as it is makes it hard to join in the fun so let’s start with a new coin that follows Litecoin’s tradition.

FeatherCoin has a block reward of 200 and will have a total of 336 million coins. This makes it four times that of LiteCoin, this is the same position that LiteCoin was set against BitCoin. There is no private preming of this coin.

This coin is in beta like all cryptocoins.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178286.0

Do you consider gearing up for launch and announcing the coin as the same time as it start pre-mining ?

14  Economy / Speculation / Estimate of how many bitcoins have felt into the wrong hands ? (pirate40 & al ?) on: April 16, 2013, 06:42:41 AM
It would seems a small part of pirate40's bitcoins could have been enough to cause the massive dump we've seen the last few days.

Pirate40 500k ?
MyBitcoin ?
Bitcoinica ?

16  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Dedicated bitcoind node, 1gb ram ="errors" : "EXCEPTION: St9bad_alloc \nstd::bad on: March 24, 2013, 03:18:27 PM
Code:
{
    "version" : 80100,
...
    "blocks" : 227829,
    "connections" : 49,
 ...
    "errors" : "EXCEPTION: St9bad_alloc       \nstd::bad_alloc       \nbitcoin in ProcessMessages()       \n"
}
I've been told this meant it was low on memory.

This is a on dedicated bitcoind node on a ubuntu VPS with 1024mb and 2048 brustable ram.

I usually reach 950mb ram when at about 36 connections.

Since all I want it to do is seed the blockchain as much as it can, should I lower the connection number to 36 even if it sometime goes to 56 without any apparent issue other than that error message.

17  Economy / Trading Discussion / CaVirtex is coming with Leveraged Bitcoin trading on: March 22, 2013, 04:04:51 AM
Some very promising stuff comming from CaVirtex

As shown in Page 8 : https://www.havelockinvestments.com/fund.php?symbol=VTX

Quote
VirtEx plans to allow customers to short the Bitcoin and launch a new fund on Havelock
Investments (HAVELOCK), the VirtEx Shorting Fund (VTXSF). Just like the stock market, when
any short position is initiated a loan takes place and interest is charged on that loan. The
interest collected from short positions on VirtEx will be equally distributed to shareholders
of VTXSF and paid daily. VTXSF will pay up to 12% per year interest while guaranteeing the
initial Bitcoin investment. As of now, VirtEx would be the only exchange in the world paying
interest on Bitcoin deposits.
VTXSF will be created for the following reasons:
 Bitcoin Speculation: VirtEx does not take a speculative position on Bitcoin and so
customers interested in holding their Bitcoin may want to invest in the fund and earn
interest while taking a speculative position.
 Marketing: Once the word spreads that VirtEx is offering a Bitcoin interest paying fund
that is 100% secured by an exchange many more customers and investors will take
notice

(IPO got released today)

Here is Pool announcement page https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=10127.0
