6  Economy / Service Discussion / Was not able to purchase my food with Bitcoin at Waves in Vancouver. on: May 02, 2014, 07:30:24 PM
To anyone who has been following the Bitcoin scene Waves Coffee House in Vancouver is well known as a centre for Bitcoin not only in BC and Canada but also around the world.

Let us keep in mind this was the first worldwide location for a Robocoin ATM and received worldwide media attention as the first Bitcoin ATM
It has been the location of many Bitcoin events.
It is also the location of Bitcoiniacs that has a major retail presence for the trading of Bitcoin.
etc. etc.

So I am visiting Vancouver for a few days and decide to check them out. I come up to the counter and order a coffee and a sandwich. When it comes time to pay I say that will be Bitcoin. I am then informed by the person at the counter that their Bitcoin system is down. Furthermore that it has been down for over a week and they have been trying to reach the company that is handling their Bitcoin payments / exchange, and that they have not got back to them. I asked who the company was and she did not know.

Given the prominence of this location it is important for whoever this company is to own up, fix this issue and apologize to the Bitcoin community. If they are not up to the task I am sure there are other competent companies who can provide Bitcoin merchant services with much better customer support.

The only positive aspect of this was that I was by myself, and avoided the embarrassment of this happening when I was introducing someone else to Bitcoin.

If you wish to have some of us early adopters spend rather than hoard our coins this kind of nonsense has to stop.
7  Bitcoin / Press / [2014-04-05] CoinDesk - Unofficial Apple iOS Store to Allow Bitcoin Wallet Apps on: April 05, 2014, 11:26:04 PM
http://www.coindesk.com/unofficial-apple-ios-store-to-allow-bitcoin-wallet-apps/

This is really interesting because according to the developers:
1) This does not require a jailbreak
2) They have legal advice to the effect that Apple cannot censor their store. The latter needs to be seen as Apple is not likely to give up their lucrative business model based upon censorship and oppression easily.

Their site https://www.avalonic.com/ is definitely worth a visit.

If this works, and it is a big if, breaking the Apple censorship model could turn out to be a killer application for Bitcoin.

The part about backing up your bitcoins on a floppy disk is actually still very relevant today. I actually use both 3.5in and 5.25in floppies as part of my bitcoin backup strategy. Floppies are in my opinion a much safer option than a certain Bitcoin exchange in Japan when it comes to safely storing Bitcoins. Wink

Ottawa bitcoin exchange defrauded of $100,000 in cyber currency

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/business/Ottawa+bitcoin+exchange+defrauded+cyber+currency/9628321/story.html

One thing keep in mind here is that the data centre that was breached was owned by Rogers. Rogers is well known in Canada for providing totally abysmal customer service for well over a quarter of a century. To quote from the article
Quote
David Girard, senior security adviser for Trend Micro Canada, said while many of the attacks against other exchanges have been sophisticated, the way that Canadian Bitcoin’s walletwas accessed shouldn’t have happened.

“The guy at the data centre should have figured out that he was being phished,” said Girard, referring to a method of prodding personal information from a target. “He does everything that the person (online) is asking without authenticating the person by having him tell him his secret password, reveal his identity or call him back on a list of users authorized to be called back. You need to have some way of authenticating when you work in a data centre.”

This kind of customer service is typical for Rogers. For example Rogers decided to ground a cable modem by drilling into a live gas line and then refused to do anything about it when advised of the problem. www.ihaterogers.ca

Edit: They also pick people basically at random and ruin their lives with bogus collection actions. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/rogers-bill-ruins-credit-rating-of-man-who-doesn-t-have-rogers-account-1.1959175

14  Other / Meta / PM phishing attack on Bitcoin Forum - Potential theft of Bitcoin on Windows on: September 08, 2013, 11:56:51 PM
I wish to draw everyone attention to the following thread in Meta https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=289995.0 where the site bitcointalk.us is collecting users passwords in http://bitcointalk.us/passes.txt

Also a note from your friendly GNU / Linux user to those who use Microsoft Windows. If you run the .exe in the PM under Microsoft Windows your Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies could potentially be at risk from malware. Note: I have not tried the .exe on Windows so this is just a possibility.

16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Windows 8, DRM plus TPM 2.0 can pose a serious threat to Bitcoin. on: August 22, 2013, 03:49:45 AM
The following article shows the Big Brother potential of propriety software married with DRM and "Trusted" Computing. German Government Warns Key Entities Not To Use Windows 8 – Links The NSA. http://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-german-government-warns-key-entities-not-to-use-windows-8--links-the-nsa-2013-8 and also
http://www.testosteronepit.com/home/2013/8/21/leaked-german-government-warns-key-entities-not-to-use-windo.html#ixzz2cfIWGUt1

To quote the first article:
Quote
Now there is a new set of specifications out, creatively dubbed TPM 2.0. While TPM allowed users to opt in and out, TPM 2.0 is activated by default when the computer boots up. The user cannot turn it off. Microsoft decides what software can run on the computer, and the user cannot influence it in any way. Windows governs TPM 2.0. And what Microsoft does remotely is not visible to the user. In short, users of Windows 8 with TPM 2.0 surrender control over their machines the moment they turn it on for the first time.

It would be easy for Microsoft or chip manufacturers to pass the backdoor keys to the NSA and allow it to control those computers. NO, Microsoft would never do that, we protest. Alas, Microsoft, as we have learned from the constant flow of revelations, informs the US government of security holes in its products well before it issues fixes so that government agencies take advantage of the holes and get what they’re looking for.

This kind of centralized control by Microsoft and by extension certain governments can pose a very serious threat to the security and integrity of the Bitcoin network. Any thoughts on defensive strategies to counteract this threat?

18  Economy / Speculation / Is the MTGox - Coinlab deal in trouble? Yes. It is in litigation! on: March 18, 2013, 05:12:26 AM

19  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-03-02 Bitcoin Exchange Deal Repatriates Assets To U.S. on: March 03, 2013, 04:13:15 PM
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jonmatonis/2013/03/02/bitcoin-exchange-deal-repatriates-assets-to-u-s/

The latest article from Jon Matonis which in this case contains a serious error.

Quote
... Mt. Gox’s non-U.S. customers are not affected by the change and they continue with procedures as before the announcement.
This is blatantly wrong since the deal involves MtGox Customers in both Canada and the United States and last I heard Canada is not the 51st state. Also the title of the artilce is missleading since since there is no repratiation of assets when assets owned by a Canadian are moved from Japan to the United States.
