This question is aimed at normal users, not those running a webservice or transaction processor. Of course you want your own node if you do the above. Unsure if this question's been asked before, searching comes up with tutorials on how to set up a node server, which I fully well know how to do. I only see the following benefits for running a Bitcoin node: - Using it as a "vote" on the Bitcoin network, signalling support for protocol changes, or even hard forks
- You want to contribute to the network by ensuring high transfer rates and network stability, with lower latency
- You want to keep your address and IP totally seperate by broadcasting to your own remote node
- When syncing your wallet, you want to connect to a node you trust
1. This doesn't necessarily require a relatively expensive and high throughput webserver 2. If you want to do it a AWS server in California, there's already a bunch of people doing it there. I don't see a point, since there are already people doing it there, who are probably putting them to good use, probably web services relying on their own node. 3. From my understanding, when a node is broadcast a transaction, they don't differentiate between relating information from other nodes and say relating that from an SPV client . 4. By connecting to multiple peers and nodes and adding trusted and reputable ones to your node list, you can prevent a malicious attack. If your client would be fooled into using an incorrect blockchain, the same thing would happen with a node, connecting to other nodes. So all in all, the only reason would be to support another hard/soft fork. But then, why pay $35+ a month for a node when you can run it from your computer or even start up a server when you find a fork you support? If I've got anything wrong, please correct me, because I'm trying to understand all the newbies trying to start up their own node without justification. To me, running a node is an investment, not a charity. |

The merit mechanic is great. It encourages users to post well to rank up. Maybe in the future signature campaigns can pay out using Merits instead of BTC  Thats something I think merit sources could be used well for. But right now, why don't we make every 10 merits we recieve, translate to 8 or 10 sMerit? People with current ranks become the merit sources, and the merit can be passed around while the 8 merits recieved will stop merits being too common. Besides the example above, can someone help me try to justify the need for merit sources? |

EDIT - I've had enough. Seen multiple reports on Reddit, Bitcoin.com, and finally here on Bitcointalk. If people are going to keep getting their money stolen from them, I'm just gonna put out this warning.
It doesn't look like a software vulnerability, since Blockchain would have received a huge wave of reports and put out a statement by now if so.
My assumption is that this is some sort of malware accessing your decrypted wallet file after you open blockchain.info with the software installed.
I really urge everyone to use a secure wallet. Not Core, not Electrum (Unless you're running them cold). Use a multisig or hardware wallet. If you're someone who is new to Bitcoin, I wouldn't care if you Coinbase. As a new user, they'll probably store your money better than you. Your money is, as opposed to what most of the sig spammers say on the forum, quite safe. Coinbase is insured and a registered company with people liable in the event that they are hacked.
TL;DR - If you're using blockchain.info (or any wallet where you are solely in control of your private keys), don't. Unless you are taking the proper safety precautions. In most cases, 2FA isn't enough.

Read some reports on forum.bitcoin.com and Reddit of people having heir balances swept out from blockchain.info, even with 2FA. No email whatsoever. I don't see any thread here, so just posting this as a warning. No statement by blockchain.info has been issued.
Reading Reddit, there are posts going back to late October 2017 relating to this. Most people complaining about this post the address 13wahvu3FP8LK8P51UmEkhBUhyC7mzkrn3, which is constantly receiving more and more Bitcoin. This leads me to think that this is some sort of attack.
I'm urging everyone to sweep their coins off of blockchain.info into a new address on a different wallet, preferably multisig. After this is cleared up, maybe you can deposit back.
This is just a little bit of googling and a couple of reports on another forum, I'm not sure whether this is a hoax or not. If someone can confirm this is an attack, that will help.

I know that buying accounts in general is strongly frowned upon. But if there's an inactive account with a username I like, and I have managed to contact the original owner through external social media, can I purchase the account? I will publicly state that I own the account, and don't plan to do anything but on that account.
I don't see any problem regarding this, but wanted to make sure.
