Yesterday Bitcoin was in trading at the level of $385. By the end of the US session, the price had dropped to $366 again, and then rebounded to $372. We asked Vishal Gupta, Founder of BitcoinCT r:  8 Alliance India, CEO at SearchTrade, and Director at Moving Trumpet: what the price of Bitcoin will be in the next 24-36 hours? Will the the price decline to $350? He said:

“Most traders who bought in at last fall seem to have booked their profits. Going forward I see buying support at $360 over next few days. In medium term I am bullish on price of bitcoin and see it breaching $450 again.”

What Is The Current State Of Bitcoin And Blockchain Technology?

What is the state of bitcoin and blockchain technology as of early 2016? originally appeared on Quora – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Susan Athey, Economics of Technology Professor, Stanford GSB; Boards: Expedia, Ripple, on Quora:

I have been working on many aspects of Bitcoin and blockchain technology for several years now.  I am on the board of Ripple, which uses blockchain-like technology for a variety of purposes, most notably helping financial institutions achieve instant settlement in cross-border payments.

First, a tiny bit of background for the uninitiated (experts can skip below for my thoughts): today we don’t really have a solid foundation on which to build modern, digital financial services. 4% of wires fail; it can cost $40 to send $40; even banks have to wait days for international transfers; and a large share of money remitted home by the world’s poorest goes to transaction fees. Most of the world’s infrastructure is decades old; old, analog processes have been digitized but not rebuilt in entirely new ways. As to what Bitcoin is, I have a YouTube video giving my version of an introduction to Bitcoin at the The Voice for Bitcoin & Blockchain Policy • Coin Center website (disclosure: I’m on the board) also has some excellent primers, and I also did an interview on Forbes awhile ago: Susan Athey On How Digital Currency Could Transform Our Lives.

Erik Voorhees: Two Moves Could End the Bitcoin Civil War

Over the past few months, the feud among bitcoin enthusiasts and developers in the community have reached its peak. Bitcoin Core attempts to relieve the tension of the community by engaging in various developments and initiatives to develop a friendlier environment for the network to scale.
Bitcoin Core has made significant progress over the past few weeks in creating a more viable atmosphere to communicate with the bitcoin community.

Core has successfully completed the launch of BitcoinCore.org to introduce updates of Bitcoin Core, the adoption rate of Bitcoin Improvement Proposals with a list of companies and their progress in integrating mechanisms such as Segregated Witness, which was proposed by Pieter Wuille at the Hong Kong Scaling Workshop in December, 2015. Core has also created a Twitter account to provide an official feed of Bitcoin Core and has set up a Slack chat group for bitcoin enthusiasts to arrange a variety of discussions.

To maintain the momentum of Core’s improvement on communicating with the community, Shapeshift CEO Erik Voorhees has suggested two proposals which could end the civil war between Bitcoin developers and the community.

Ukrainian Freelancers Can Now Accept Bitcoin Through Freelancehunt

Bitcoin is a very powerful tool to bring more financial freedom to people all over the world. One of the key groups of workers who could benefit from Bitcoin is freelancers. Dealing with different employers and different contracts is a big hassle, so the least a freelancer wants is to accept a uniform payment method that works all over the world. Despite best efforts by traditional finance, they are no match for Bitcoin in this regard.

Breadwallet CEO Aaron Voisine: SegWit Soft Fork First, Block Size Hard Fork Later

The ongoing block size dispute has catapulted to the center of attention again. One of the most talked-about developments is Segregated Witness, of which a public testnet iteration was launched last week. The innovation as recently proposed by Blockstream co-founder and Bitcoin Core developer Dr. Pieter Wuille is the centerpiece of a scalability “roadmap” set out by Bitcoin Core.
But relying on Segregated Witness as the next step of Bitcoin’s scalability process is opposed by the recently launched Bitcoin Core fork Bitcoin Classic. Rather than a Segregated Witness soft fork, Bitcoin Classic prefers to deploy a “cleaner” hard fork in order to increase the block size limit to 2 megabytes.
To find out where the development community stands on this issue, Bitcoin Magazine reached out to library and wallet developers – those who will need to do the heavy lifting in order to utilize Segregated Witness once rolled out.

BTCC, one of the world’s largest bitcoin exchanges by market share, has recently reported unusually high transaction volume following the recent slump in values of global stock and commodities.

How Bitcoin technology could change banking in Canada

The virtual currency Bitcoin has earned a reputation as a plaything for libertarians or a tool used to covertly buy drugs on the Internet.
But more recently the technology underlying the currency — referred to as “blockchain” or “distributed ledger” technology — is being touted as the next big thing poised to transform the financial services industry.
In order to prevent themselves from being blindsided, Canadian banks are jumping on board, exploring ways the technology can help streamline their processes.
“I do think blockchain is a massive opportunity,” Linda Mantia, executive vice-president of digital, payments and cards at Royal Bank, said during a panel discussion on financial disruption in Toronto late last year.

Pablo Gonzalez on Why Bitcoin Makes Sense for Mexico

Although bitcoin is often touted as a global currency, the reality is that some countries may find it more useful than others. While moving toward more generalized blockchain technology is the trend in the developed world, there are still plenty of people in certain parts of the world who don’t have much interest in permissioned ledgers.

Bitso CEO Pablo Gonzalez was recently interviewed on Trace Mayer’s Bitcoin Knowledge Podcast, and one of the main topics of conversation was why Gonzalez decided to build a Bitcoin exchange in Mexico. Mayer clearly understands Bitcoin’s potential in Latin America, as he noted the following near the beginning of the interview:
“BitPay’s transaction volumes are growing everywhere. They’re growing in North America; they’re growing in Europe; they’re growing in Asia; but far and away, Latin America is where the big growth is coming with BitPay.”

Egyptian Satirist Threatened for Giving Police Condom Balloons

An Egyptian comedian who works as a correspondent for a popular satirical television program could be in legal trouble for handing balloons made of inflated condoms to police officers in Tahrir Square on Monday, the fifth anniversary of the uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak.

Video of the prank showed the comedian, Shady Abu Zaid, and a young actor, Ahmed Malek, pretending to celebrate a national holiday in honor of Egypt’s police by giving unwitting officers the balloons. The video became a sensation on Facebook, where it was viewed more than 1.4 million times through Tuesday afternoon.

Most Bitcoin Users Don’t Understand Bitcoin – But Does it Matter?

An understanding of what bitcoin is, how it works and its various features and benefits have, in the bitcoin space, traditionally been viewed as a key component of mainstream adoption. How can the general public be expected to switch from things like PayPal, fiat, Visa etc., if they don’t understand how what they are switching to works? There is some common sense in this view. Individuals who lack an understanding of cryptocurrency are more often than not intimidated by its seeming complexity, and this puts them off using it to transact.

The conclusions of a recent study, however, go against these views. They suggest that while there is an element of uncertainty and – in turn – fear among non-bitcoin users, the majority of users don’t really understand bitcoin and its underlying technology, yet they don’t allow this lack of understanding to influence their willingness to interact with the digital currency space.

Denmark to vote on tough migrant law as Nordic refugee welcome wanes

The Danish parliament is set to pass measures on Tuesday to deter refugees from seeking asylum, including confiscating valuables to pay for their stay, despite protests from international human rights organizations.

The measures, which also include delaying family reunification to three years, are the latest sign that the Nordic welcome for refugees is waning as large numbers flee war in Africa and Middle East in what is becoming Europe's biggest migrant crisis in decades.

The "jewelry bill" is the latest attempt by Denmark's seven-month-old minority center-right government to curb immigration to a country that took in a record 20,000 refugees last year.

Under the bill, refugees could keep possessions amounting to 10,000 Danish crowns ($1,450), raised from 3,000 crowns after criticism from human rights organizations. Valuables of special emotional value such as wedding rings will be exempt.

The Liberals government has just 34 out of 179 seats in parliament and depends on support of rightist parties, including the anti-immigration Danish People's Party (DF), to pass laws.

The bill is likely to pass with most lawmakers from the main center-left opposition party Social Democrats expected to vote for, as Denmark's political landscape shifts to the right thanks to DF's popularity and rising concern over refugee numbers.

A poll showing 70 percent of voters see it as the most important issue, according to the daily paper Berlingske.

"I wouldn't say that I have become racist or anything," said Poul Madsen, a taxi driver, before the bill was passed. "But I may be more aware of the fact that this has some downsides and may be a potential problem for our society and our economy."

Brave to offer publishers, users, and advertisers a cut of the profits with bitcoin

Brave, a new open source internet browser, was made to compete with the likes of Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, but does away with the existing advertising economy, replacing it with a new one that works quite differently, running on Bitcoin.

“The new Brave browser blocks all the greed and ugliness on the Web that slows you down and invades your privacy. Then we put clean ads back, to fund website owners and Brave users alike. Users can spend their funds to go ad-free on their favorite sites.“

EU COMMISSION NIXES CALLS TO REGULATE ‘HYPED’ DIGITAL CURRENCIES

The European Union doesn’t see any need to regulate the “hyped” virtual currencies. At least, not yet.

EU commission nixes calls to regulate ‘hyped’ digital currenciesDigital currencies are largely self-regulated and not backed by a central bank, making it popular as an alternative to fiat currency. However, the collapse of bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox in 2014 raised the issue of consumer protection in the experimental sector.

Bitcoin has also gotten a bad rap in 2013 after authorities in the United States uncovered Silk Road, a notorious “deep web” operation known for allowing its users to buy and sell drugs and other transactions involving a wide range of illegal practices, including hiring hitmen, using virtual currency.

The attack on Paris—in which hackers claimed terrorists used Bitcoin to fund the operation—hasn’t helped either, and only sparked renewed debates on the potential of digital currencies to be used to finance terrorism and money laundering.

However, the EU’s European Commission believes that monitoring cryptocurrencies is more important at the moment than proposing new rules.
