9  Other / Politics & Society / Girl, 14, cuts her brother's girlfriend's throat and tells her 'Have a nice afte on: July 31, 2016, 08:47:30 AM
Kali Jade Bookey from New Richmond, Wisconsin, was charged as an adult by police on 28 July with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. If convicted, she could be jailed for up to 40 years. Bookey is currently held without bail in juvenile custody before a preliminary hearing slated for 8 August.

Police documents claim that she attacked her victim – her brother's girlfriend – in the girl's bedroom, by attempting to suffocate her. She is then alleged to have smashed two bowls on the victim's head, and finally cut her throat with a shard from one of the bowls.

10  Other / Politics & Society / Kim Jong Un’s aunt speaks up after 18 years of silence in the U.S. on: May 28, 2016, 01:35:33 PM
For nearly two decades, Ko Yong Suk and her husband, Ri Gang, have lived a modest, middle class existence in the United States, working long hours at their dry cleaning business to provide a comfortable life and opportunities for their three children.

But before embarking on their pursuit of the American Dream, Ko and Ri lived a life of luxury inside one of the world’s most reclusive and repressive regimes. Ko’s sister, the late Ko Yong Hui, was married to former North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il. Her nephew is Kim Jong Un, the country’s current leader, who is known for his penchant for threatening nuclear war.

For the first time since defecting to the United States with the help of the CIA 18 years ago, the couple broke their silence in a series of interviews with the Washington Post that offer a fascinating look at life inside the mysterious Kim regime and insight into the childhood of the man who would become one of the United States’ most hostile adversaries. To protect their identities here in the U.S., the Post story uses the names by which they were each known back in North Korea.

Keeping up with the Kims

The Washington Post writes that Ko was “catapulted” from a modest upbringing to the “top echelons of North Korean society” when her sister became Kim Jong Il’s third wife, in 1975.

Soon after, Ko was married to Ri — a husband chosen for her by the future supreme leader himself — and taking care of her own children as well as her sister’s at the Pyongyang compound, where they all lived together.

“We lived the good life,” Ko told the Post, which included dining on caviar and cognac and taking joyrides in Kim Jong Il’s Mercedes-Benz.

12  Other / Politics & Society / Obama says Trump, Cruz doing Democrats a 'favor' on: April 09, 2016, 11:26:02 AM
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday told donors that Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz were doing Democrats a "favor" by exposing extreme views within their party on issues such as immigration and national security.

"I actually think that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have done us a favor," Obama said, referring to policy positions that would restrict Muslims and Mexicans from entering the country.

Obama said Trump and Cruz, the two front-runners in the Republican nomination contest ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election, have upset mainstream "establishment" Republicans with their insurgent campaigns.

But he told about 100 people at the annual "signature" fundraising dinner for Nancy Pelosi, Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, that Trump had laid bare what some in the Republican party had been saying for years.

"He said, 'You know what? I can deliver this message with more flair, with more panache,'" Obama said.

Speaking in an opulent two-storey atrium with marble pillars in the home of billionaire oil heirs Gordon and Ann Getty, where donors paid $33,400 per couple to benefit the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Obama mocked Trump.

"In 10 months, I will no longer be president of the United States. But in 10 months, I will - contrary to Mr. Trump's opinion - still be a citizen of the United States," he said, drawing laughter and cheers from the crowd.

Trump had long raised questions about whether Obama, who was born in Hawaii, was actually born outside the United States.

It was Obama's fourth stop on a fundraising swing through San Francisco and Los Angeles. Earlier, in San Francisco, Obama held a private roundtable at the Potrero Hill home of Susan Sandler and Steve Philips for the Democratic National Committee with about 25 people who paid up to $33,400 to attend.

He started Friday in Los Angeles with a breakfast event at the Brentwood home of "Spiderman" actor Tobey Maguire, closed to the media, where an undisclosed number of $33,400-tickets raised money for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

On Thursday, he spoke at a fundraising dinner for the DCCC in a tent with seating for about 80 people outside the Bel Air home of Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, and Cindy Horn, an environmental activist.

13  Other / Politics & Society / Turkey's Erdogan says Obama spoke 'behind my back' on press freedom. on: April 04, 2016, 10:22:18 AM
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused U.S. counterpart Barack Obama of going behind his back for criticizing Turkey's press freedom record and linked it to efforts to "divide" Turkey, media reports said on Sunday.

Obama said on Friday after meeting Erdogan on the sidelines of a nuclear summit in Washington that he was troubled by curbs on the press in Turkey and said he had urged Erdogan not to repress democratic debate in his country.

Turkey has drawn international condemnation for charging two journalists with treason for publishing footage that purportedly showed the intelligence agency shipping truckloads of weapons to opposition fighters in Syria in early 2014. Can Dundar and Erdem Gul of Cumhuriyet face life in prison.

"I was saddened to hear that statement made behind my back. During my talk with Obama, those issues did not come up," Erdogan told reporters, according to Hurriyet daily. He returned to Turkey after a five-day trip to Washington on Sunday.

"You cannot consider insults and threats press freedom or criticism," Erdogan said.

Turkey has seized control of opposition newspapers and TV channels and cut the satellite feed of a pro-Kurdish channel, accusing them of terrorism-related activities. Erdogan has personally brought more than 1,800 criminal suits against individuals, including journalists and children, for insulting him since becoming president in 2014.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said at least 13 journalists are in jail for their coverage and described a "massive crackdown" that includes self-censorship and harassment of media-business owners.

'MASTERMIND'

Criticism of Turkey's press record seeks to "divide, shatter and if they could, swallow up Turkey," he said. "This is what I mean by mastermind. A mastermind is playing games over Turkey.

Erdogan and his supporters occasionally refer to a shadowy foreign "mastermind" that seeks to destabilize Turkey, a NATO member that shares borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Separately, Erdogan said the U.S. and Turkey had edged closer in their stances on Syrian Kurds, close U.S. allies in the fight against Islamic State.

Turkey sees the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and its political arm, the PYD, as part of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade insurgency against Turkey. U.S. officials have said they distinguish between the groups.

Both Vice President Joseph Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry promised Erdogan during meetings they would not allow the formation of a PYD-run state in Syria, the Turkish leader said.

Turkey is putting forth the names of 2,400 trained Arab and Turkmen fighters to battle Islamic State, Erdogan also said, describing them as part of the moderate opposition. This was "so the U.S. no longer has an excuse" for co-operating with the YPG and PYD, he said.

15  Other / Politics & Society / Did Obama just send Hillary Clinton the all-clear on the FBI investigation? on: January 28, 2016, 11:29:27 AM
Each day brings new details about the classified information Hillary Clinton had on her homebrew server. The disclosures are inevitably followed by demands that she be indicted.

Color me skeptical that she will face criminal charges, especially after President Obama’s kind words for her.

His praise of Clinton’s experience in an interview, twinned with his comparison of Bernie Sanders as a “bright, shiny object,” were widely interpreted as a Clinton endorsement.

Correctly so, but there’s more to it. Obama wouldn’t be endorsing Clinton if he intended to let the Justice Department indict her. Thus, I believe his remarks also were meant to signal the all-clear on the FBI investigation.

As interviewer Glenn Thrush put it, Obama “couldn’t hide his obvious affection for Clinton or his implicit feeling that she, not Sanders, best understands” the complexity of the job.

While the White House insists that Obama remains neutral, Thrush quoted an aide saying the president is “clearly thumbing the scale for Hillary.”
