21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Crypto for the Masses - Israeli Bitcoin documentary film on: August 20, 2014, 12:18:18 PM
An independent team of Bitcoin enthusiasts is now raising funds for the feature-length documentary film "Crypto for the Masses".

The film will discuss what Bitcoin is, what it can do, explain the flaws in the current state of the economy and aim to change the perception of the illusioned. It will be filmed in Israel and will feature mostly Israel's Bitcoin experts and activists, but it will be watched and push Bitcoin forward everywhere.

The trailer for the film is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-O--m7Uz80 (dialogue in Hebrew and English, subtitles in English).

The crowdfunding takes place at http://www.headstart.co.il/project.aspx?id=11322&lan=en-US. The goal is 94,500 ILS which is approximately $27,000. Bitcoin payments are not integrated into the Headstart platform, however you can pledge bitcoins in one of two ways:

1. Anonymous donations to 189kiya3XFc8g1vD2CfV1gTj58Cyzz72xZ. You will not get benefits for this.

2. Depositing bitcoins with Ariel Horwitz, also known as WiW. He can be reached at crypto@alefbit.com. You will get the same benefits as with donating through the Headstart platform, and if the drive fails, you will get the money back.

The film will be produced with the financial and professional support of the Israeli Bitcoin Association.

Join in and help making this a reality!
22  Bitcoin / Meetups / Israel Bitcoin Conference October 19-20, 2014 on: August 11, 2014, 05:45:56 PM
Hi all,

On October 19-20 we will be holding a Bitcoin conference in Tel Aviv, a joint work of the Israeli Bitcoin Association and Media Bistro's "Inside Bitcoins" brand. More details about the event are available at http://bitcointlv.com/.

This will replace the original conference planned for July 28-29, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the recent conflict in Israel. We expect the situation to be fully resolved by the time of the new date.

We expect hundreds of people from around the world to participate, and we have ~40 speakers consisting of both Bitcoin's worldwide experts and Israel's local talent. The agenda will be based on the original agenda, with some modifications that will be finalized moving forward.

We're designing the conference to have something for everyone, with topics covering both Bitcoin's industry (businesses, start-ups, commerce, communities, regulation and authorities) and technology (core protocol, software, features, algorithms and academic research).

The tentative agenda is available on the site, but it is still actively developed with new sessions added and existing sessions being finalized.

The early bird registration price is $179 for the whole conference, though there are some discounted ticket options.

The deadline for enjoying the best rates will last until the end of August, so make sure not to miss this opportunity to network, learn about developments in the Bitcoin world, and visit the Bitcoin empire that is Israel.

Any questions or requests can be directed to conference@bitcoin.org.il.

I hope to see you all there!

23  Economy / Services / [Closed] Wanted: PHP Script to collect data on addresses on: July 09, 2014, 12:55:17 PM
Hi, I'm offering 0.2 BTC for PHP code that does the following:

1. Accepts a list of Bitcoin addresses as a parameter.
2. Queries each address on blockchain.info or equivalent.
3. Outputs a tsv of all transactions involving one of the addresses in the list. For every such transaction there should be a row with the following fields:
* The address involved
* The balance change for the address in this transaction (total value of all outputs to this address, minus total value of all inputs from it)
* The date at which the transaction occured.
4. For addresses that do not appear in the blockchain at all, there should be a row with the address and 0 in the other fields.
5. The rows should be sorted by the address (in the original order the addresses were given), and then by the transaction date.

The code should be safe against injection attacks (if there is such a risk in the first place).

25  Bitcoin / Press / [2014-06-10] Bitcoin in Israel's central news edition on channel 2 on: June 10, 2014, 07:46:38 PM
We've had our fair share of Bitcoin coverage on TV; but for the first time, there was a story about Bitcoin in a central news edition in Israeli TV, on channel 2, June 10 2014 (the program starts at 19:58).

The story focused on a new Bitcoin ATM placed in the "Town House" hotel in Tel Aviv (a Robocoin machine, operated by the Israeli BitBox). For various reasons the program referred to it as "the first Bitcoin ATM in Israel", despite the fact that we already have a Lamassu ATM.

In addition, the Bitcoin Embassy in Tel Aviv was shown, along with some general discussion about Bitcoin.

33  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Feedback wanted re paper wallet tutorial on: December 01, 2013, 12:16:32 AM
When people ask me how to store their bitcoins I always recommend a paper wallet, but lacked a good tutorial to refer them to - so I decided to write one, and put it on my blog: http://fieryspinningsword.com/2013/12/01/how-to-create-a-reasonably-secure-bitcoin-paper-wallet/

Since I am not a security expert, I was hoping someone could go over it and tell me about any faults, before I announce this post.

I also have a specific question about bitaddress.org's entropy model. When the website is loaded, it asks for some mouse movements to generate entropy. But if I save the file locally and run it, it doesn't repeat the process, it picks up where it left. Is it safe to save locally, disconnect from internet and the click "Generate"? Or does something extra need to be done? (Edit: Downloading the source from github should fix that).

38  Economy / Service Discussion / Netsolus - Incompetent, terrible communication on: October 23, 2013, 05:25:08 PM
I don't know how many have heard about Netsolus, so I hope I'm not doing them a favor by merely mentioning them.

But Newton's 3rd law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. And the reaction to their atrocious behavior is that I let you all know that they're terrible.

Netsolus is a server hosting company that, among other things, works in collaboration with BFL to offer hosting to owners of BFL hardware (yes, we know about the problems with BFL, let's not make this thread about them).

Having purchased 3 BFL 500 GH/s rigs, with the original plan being hosting them with Inaba, I was offered to host them with Netsolus (actually at first it was a different host, also not so great).

Since the rigs arrived one by one, the situation was a bit messy. Whenever I asked them for clarification about the status of my rigs, I either received no response at all, or a belated and incomplete one. I believe that for extended periods of time, rigs that were in their possession were not actually running, and it was a struggle to extract from them some information to allow me to investigate this.

The most egregious incident is for a rig that was delivered to their premises last Monday. I inquired last week, got a template response. After the weekend, again a template response.

This morning I received an invoice, I had to leave early so I noted it for future handling. Not having heard anything about the new rig I inquired again. First, I was told that the rig hasn't been brought online because of the outstanding invoice - that's no way to treat a customer who has already paid past invoices, trusting them with expensive equipment generating $200 per day. Second, they said that they have multiple times informed me that the outstanding invoice is a blocker to putting the rig up - which is a lie, they have not once said anything about this invoice beyond the automated invoice generation message, which of course did not say anything about being a blocker.

Their behavior has probably caused me more losses than the payment to them, which itself is arguably too pricey. That's on top of all the time (which I have very little of) wasted chasing them for some answers.

I'm highly dissatisfied.
39  Economy / Service Discussion / Mtgox manual withdrawal with extra 5% fee? on: October 16, 2013, 02:58:05 PM
Rumor has it that it is possible to withdraw USD from Mtgox by paying a 5% fee.

Has this been confirmed by Mtgox?

Where can I find more information about it?

Is the money collected by Mtgox or their bank?

When did this option start?

How is it actually done? I could find no mention of it in the withdrawal interface.
40  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Meni's Blog - Fiery Spinning Sword on: October 02, 2013, 09:09:26 PM
I have started a new blog, Fiery Spinning Sword. It will be mostly about Bitcoin stuff. You are welcome to visit.

Still playing around with the design.
