Russian authorities are reportedly planning to abandon efforts to institute criminal penalties for bitcoin users.

The news comes from a report issued today by Russian news agency Interfax in which it asserts that representatives from the country's Ministry of Finance, central bank and other government bureaus are increasingly supportive of this action.

According to the report, representatives from these groups are planning to submit a report to Russian President Vladimir Putin containing this recommendation sometime in 2016.

The past couple months have been quite the roller coaster in the world of public blockchains. $125 million has been stolen and the communities of Bitcoin and Ethereum have been scrambling to pick up the pieces.

First there was the $50m Ether heist from The DAO, a company which had raised over $150 million based on the premise that its management was a distributed autonomous organization. According to law experts in South Africa, most banks are scared of blockchain for its power to disrupt their sector.

A Senior Associate at Norton Rose Fulbright in Johannesburg, Nerushka Bowan, said the adoption of blockchain among banks has the potential to disrupt the global banking industry.

Using the blockchain technology and its digital distributed ledger to confirm batches of transactions just as it does for bitcoin, it can take over functions such as verifying payments. She added that though banks are a trusted intermediary for the exchange of funds, they will be cut out once the use of blockchain is embraced. Hence the fear in the banking sector.

Cryptomate, a UK-based peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchange marketplace, is launching an international crowdfunding campaign to finance its expansion worldwide, the company said earlier this week. It intends to launch websites in new markets and to offer stakes in them in exchange for financing.

As part of the crowdfunding offer, Cryptomate seeks to attract international partners who would fund its regional services. It is set new websites in the UK, Australia, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Germany, and Canada. The company offers 20% stakes in these websites in exchange for $10,000, except for the new UK website in which a 20% stake is offered for $20,000. The dark web once used to be a place where anonymity was virtually guaranteed, and internet criminals got away with just about anything.
