21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / SEC Commisioner Pierce: Crypto landscape is changing on: October 10, 2020, 11:37:10 PM
According to an interview to her by Cointelegraph, she says that the crypto landing is evolving. I do hope though that the changes she is talking about will be more on a positive upside to us.

Quote
“While we’ve been very slow in giving guidance, there is more and more interest from a wide spectrum of people, both inside the crypto space as well as inside the traditional financial institutions who are asking us for guidance. So I think we’re going to be forced to confront that more and more in the coming years.”

And as per the DeFi hype

Quote
“We need to be thinking about what we can bring to that as a regulator, where is it important for us to play a role. And that’s a conversation that not only we at the SEC need to be having, but as DeFi develops, society needs to be thinking about those kinds of questions too. And Congress needs to be thinking about those kinds of questions so that we can get from them directives on how they want us to handle some of these things.”

Ok so it seems that they are closely monitoring this DeFi thingy so I wouldn't be surprised if the DeFi bubbles and then SEC stepping up, in my opinion.

24  Bitcoin / Legal / US government imposing fines for those companies paying ransomware on: October 03, 2020, 10:32:24 AM
In a ironic move by the US federal government, companies that are going to cooperate and pay ransom to cyber threat actors are going to be liable as "even if it did not know or have reason to know it was engaging in a transaction with a person that is prohibited under sanctions laws and regulations administered by OFAC."

https://home.treasury.gov/system/files/126/ofac_ransomware_advisory_10012020_1.pdf

I guess what the US want is to really stop this attack on US soil specially those coming from state backup attacks, specially from North Korea. And now they are encouraging victims to contact relevant government agencies first before dealing with this cyber actors.
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 18.5 million BTC already mined on: September 28, 2020, 08:41:00 AM
Time is not on our side, 18.5 BTC has already been mined. So it means that only less than 2.5 million BTC is left for us to grab and accumulate overtime. So make the right choice, invest while there is still time, as there will be demand in the future because supply is getting short.

Sydney man sentenced for mining over AU$9,000 in crypocurrency on CSIRO kit

Quote
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Monday announced the sentencing of a 34-year old man from Sydney for using Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) equipment to carry out cryptocurrency mining.

The North Shore man was hired as a contractor in January 2018 and had access to the servers and supercomputers he used for mining to perform his employed role in data archiving and software support.

The AFP said the man accessed servers and supercomputers meant for undertaking a range of official scientific research and modified data within those systems, without authorisation, to mine cryptocurrency for his personal gain.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/sydney-man-sentenced-for-mining-over-au9000-of-crypocurrency-on-csiro-kit/

The lure of crypto mining, Lol, although is supposedly profits is not that big, but still how can of that intelligence will really fall for crypto mining and thought that they can get away with it? Not the first time though, Russian nuclear scientists arrested for 'Bitcoin mining plot'. I guess there will be people who are going to take advantage of their position to get their hands on crypto, specially if you have accessed to this kind of super computers.
27  Bitcoin / Legal / SEC Shuts Down Unikrn For Its $31M 2017 ICO on: September 19, 2020, 10:20:09 AM
SEC Shuts Down Unikrn For Its $31M 2017 ICO

Quote
Key Takeaways

The Securities Exchange Commission is effectively shutting down Unikrn for its $31.4 million ICO conducted in 2017.

Pro-cryptocurrency Commissioner Hester Peirce objected to the enforcement action, saying that it may set a precedent that would stifle future innovation.

Unikrn will serve as an example to other ICOs that the SEC is serious about securities registration requirements and will continue to ramp up enforcement.

https://cryptobriefing.com/sec-shuts-down-unikrn-31m-2017-ico-commissioner-hester-peirce-dissents/

So another one bites the dust, it looks like SEC is ramping up it's activity regarding shutting down known ICO's in 2017, during the hype, and sending messages that they need every projects needs to comply with them otherwise a legal case, worst their project are going to be pulled out.
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Aviatrade accepting BTC as payment for $40 million Gulfstream private jet on: September 14, 2020, 08:00:12 AM
Quote
Aviatrade just introduced a new payment platform for its aircraft inventory allowing buyers to pay with any kind of cryptocurrency and the first plane available for purchase with the virtual money is a Gulfstream G650ER that just came on the market. The six-year-old plane has spent time in New Zealand and Asia but is now returning to its birthplace at Gulfstream's headquarters in Savannah, Georgia as it undergoes routine inspections and awaits a new owner.

https://www.businessinsider.com/gulfstream-g650er-can-be-bought-with-bitcoin-for-40-million-2020-9

So Aviatrade is willing to accept BTC as payment for this luxurious Gulfstream G650ER, with notable owners like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. It will be interesting to hear as whether some whales are willing to purchase or even big time gamblers or billionaires willing to buy it in BTC.
29  Bitcoin / Legal / SEC Charges Film Producer, Rapper, and Others for Participation in 2 Fraudulent on: September 13, 2020, 04:16:34 AM
SEC Charges Film Producer, Rapper, and Others for Participation in Two Fraudulent ICOs

Quote
Washington D.C., Sept. 11, 2020 —
The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced charges against five Atlanta-based individuals, including film producer Ryan Felton, rapper and actor Clifford Harris, Jr., known as T.I. or Tip, and three others who each promoted one of Felton’s two unregistered and fraudulent initial coin offerings (ICOs).  The SEC also charged FLiK and CoinSpark, the two companies controlled by Felton that conducted the ICOs. Aside from Felton, all of the individuals have agreed to settlements to resolve the charges against them.

The SEC’s complaint alleges that Felton promised to build a digital streaming platform for FLiK, and a digital-asset trading platform for CoinSpark. Instead, Felton allegedly misappropriated the funds raised in the ICOs. The complaint also alleges that Felton secretly transferred FLiK tokens to himself and sold them into the market, reaping an additional $2.2 million in profits, and that he engaged in manipulative trading to inflate the price of SPARK tokens.  Felton allegedly used the funds he misappropriated and the proceeds of his manipulative trading to buy a Ferrari, a million-dollar home, diamond jewelry, and other luxury goods.

In a settled administrative order, the SEC finds that T.I. offered and sold FLiK tokens on his social media accounts, falsely claiming to be a FLiK co-owner and encouraging his followers to invest in the FLiK ICO. T.I. also asked a celebrity friend to promote the FLiK ICO on social media and provided the language for posts, referring to FLiK as T.I.’s “new venture.” The SEC’s complaint alleges that T.I.’s social media manager William Sparks, Jr. offered and sold FLiK tokens on T.I.’s social media accounts, and that two other Atlanta residents, Chance White and Owen Smith, promoted SPARK tokens without disclosing they were promised compensation in return.

“The federal securities laws provide the same protections to investors in digital asset securities as they do to investors in more traditional forms of securities,” said Carolyn M. Welshhans, Associate Director in the Division of Enforcement. “As alleged in the SEC’s complaint, Felton victimized investors through material misrepresentations, misappropriation of their funds, and manipulative trading.”

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, charges Felton with violating registration, antifraud, and anti-manipulation provisions of the federal securities laws.  FLiK and CoinSpark are charged with violating registration and anti-fraud provisions. White and Smith are charged with violating registration and anti-touting provisions. Sparks is charged with violating registration provisions.  The complaint seeks injunctive relief, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, and civil monetary penalties, as well as an officer-and-director bar against Felton. Sparks agreed to disgorge his ill-gotten gains plus prejudgment interest, and Sparks, White, and Smith each agreed to pay a penalty of $25,000 and to conduct-based injunctions prohibiting them from participating in the issuance, purchase, offer, or sale of any digital asset security for a period of five years. The proposed settlements are subject to court approval. Three of Felton’s family members and an LLC that he established were also named as relief defendants. The SEC’s order against T.I. requires him to pay a $75,000 civil monetary penalty and not participate in offerings or sales of digital-asset securities for at least five years.

https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2020-207

So there's some sort of justice here, however $75K? I don't know if that is enough or not. But I just the point that SEC is sending is that they are in top of the game and everyone will be accounted for and going to be chase regardless of who you are.

31  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Jackpot! User turns $200 into $250K thanks to a buggy DeFi protocol on: September 10, 2020, 12:28:13 PM
An anonymous user managed to net a profit of $250k from a $200 outlay due to a flaw in a DeFi protocol clone’s rebase code.

Quote
The token SYFI was launched as a soft-pegged adaptive cryptocurrency that expands or contracts its supply automatically. The concept was popularized by Ampleforth which uses a rebasing mechanism to adjust the supply to reflect changes in demand.

However, the Uniswap price of the cloned token was not adjusted to account for the rebase and the trader managed to sell the tokens at the previous price, wiping out virtually all of the liquidity in the pool. A flaw in the SYFI-rebasing mechanism allowed the anonymous user to obtain a large amount of tokens during its first rebase on September 3.

A DeFi trader using the Twitter handle Amplify has admitted that he was the one who netted 740 ETH from an initial investment of just 0.5 ETH. This works out at roughly a $250,000 return for a $200 layout.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/jackpot-user-turns-200-into-250k-thanks-to-a-buggy-defi-protocol

Lucky guy indeed, but I was just thinking, if you're the guy in this situation? Are you going to take advantage of the exploit or will simply inform the devs about it? It's a question of ethics and morals and values here.

Crypto Friendly trading app Robinhood being probed by SEC for Civil Fraud

Ok, it seems that the investigators steam from this, 20-Year-Old Robinhood Customer Dies By Suicide After Seeing A $730,000 Negative.

And we have been discussing that Robinhood should be held liable, and it seems that SEC has step up with probably a civil case against them and it's just about time, in my opinion.

Mike Novogratz and Dave Portnoy Say Buy Bitcoin and Not Gold

Quote
In an appearance on Bloomberg Television, Novogratz — founder of Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd. — said that although he sees gold climbing above its record highs, Bitcoin is still the more worthy investment because it’s “harder to buy” than the traditional haven. He said about 25% of his net worth is tied up in the cryptocurrency.

“It’s only got a $20 billion market cap, while gold is over $10 trillion,” Novogratz said of Bitcoin. “So it’s got a long way to go to catch gold in terms of just adoption.” Still, he doesn’t recommend beginners put in more than 1-2% of their money into the digital currency.

Barstool Sports founder Portnoy, meanwhile, was sold on the cryptocurrency after being pitched by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. In a video posted on Portnoy’s Twitter feed, the twin brothers — who founded crypto exchange Gemini Trust — say Bitcoin has the potential to replace gold as a store of value. Their reasoning? They claim that Elon Musk has plans to mine gold from asteroids.

In a tweet after his interview with the Winklevoss twins, Portnoy suggested he has bought $1 million worth of Bitcoin.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/mike-novogratz-dave-portnoy-buy-211820610.html

More institutional money flowing to bitcoin? It's obvious shilling, but we all know that they have a point here. And as much as majority here hates Mike N with his exorbitant predictions or sometimes gloom and doom, hehehe.

Steve Wozniak Sues YouTube Over Twitter-Like Bitcoin Scam

Quote
Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Wozniak says YouTube has for months allowed scammers to use his name and likeness as part of a phony bitcoin giveaway similar to the one that was quickly extinguished by Twitter Inc. last week.

Scammers used images and video of Wozniak, who left Apple in 1985, to convince YouTube users that he was hosting a live giveaway and anyone who sent him bitcoins will get double the number back, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in state court in San Mateo County, California. “But when users transfer their cryptocurrency, in an irreversible transaction, they receive nothing back.”

The scam also uses the names and images of other tech celebrities, including Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, according to the suit.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-23/steve-wozniak-sues-youtube-over-twitter-like-bitcoin-scam

Steve W. is not the first high profile personalities that sue Youtube over this scam. Brad Garlinghouse of XRP, https://fortune.com/2020/04/21/ripple-sues-youtube-scam-videos-crypto-garlinghouse/.

I think Youtube should step up and better police their service with this rampant fake giveaways promoted on their platform. It's about time, specially on what had happen to Twitter in recent days.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ethereum Calls On Hackers to Attack Ethereum 2.0 in Exchange for Bug Bounty on: July 21, 2020, 10:14:13 PM
Ethereum is now calling hackers either ethical or black hat hackers to try and break their Ethereum 2.0 and received a reward.

With Ethereum's plans to launch its 2.0 protocol network, the open-source platform has also decided to tweak its blockchain project to perfection by calling all hackers and challenging them to break into two Ethereum 2.0 attack networks.

I think this is a good move in my opinion, they have open the floodgates for others to test it because going full live. At least this is sort of like testing it extremely thorough and careful way instead of releasing it then hackers breaking it and stealing money in the end.

Argentina’s telecommunications hacked and called for rescue in Monero
by Amber Baxter July 19, 2020
Telecommunications, Argentina’s largest telecommunications company was the victim of a ransomware attack as reported by several users on Twitter. Hackers are demanding $ 7.5 million in Monero (XMR), an amount that would increase to 15 million if the company doesn’t pay in less than 48 hours.

https://www.europeworldnews.com/argentinas-telecommunications-hacked-and-called-for-rescue-in-monero

It's interesting that the hackers are now demanding Monero, instead of the usual BTC which is the mode of ransom for many such attacks. Its for $7.5 million, and that is huge amount, I don't know if the company are willing to comply though, so let's see how things will turn out.
