Bitcoin Price Spikes Above $1,300 as ETF Decision Nears

Bitcoin prices saw a significant price spike this morning, briefly shooting above $1,300 to hit a new all-time high.

Markets peaked at an average of $1,325.81, according to the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (BPI), before falling sharply back below that level to hit a daily low of $1,178.54 – a change of roughly $133 within minutes. The price drop appears to have been seen most directly on digital currency exchange Bitfinex, reaching $1,120, BPI data shows.

At press time, the price is an average of $1,263.98, BPI data shows.

The price developments come as the US Securities and Exchange Commission nears a decision on a rule change that would clear the way for a proposed bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). That decision is expected today, though as of press time, the agency has yet to release any information regarding the ETF.

From First Filing to Final Decision: The Journey of the Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF – CoinDesk

t’s a looming decision that has sparked global headlines, turned the heads of financial analysts and kept the bitcoin world on the edge of its proverbial seat.

This refers, of course, to the bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposed by investors Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. That ETF – first proposed in mid-2013 and subject to a range of public comments and exchange switches – is effectively waiting in the wings for a decision by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which is weighing a rule change proposal that would clear its passage.

While most in the digital currency space likely know the ins-and-outs of the ETF story, those not so familiar with it might not understand all the details. In this feature, CoinDesk explores the journey - from start to near-finish – of the proposed bitcoin ETF.

In the beginning

Before getting into the story of the bitcoin ETF’s early days, it might help to understand who Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are exactly.

Both graduates from Harvard University, the two took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men’s rowing competition, where they advanced to the finals and ultimately scored sixth place, according to ESPN.

Another major event in their pre-bitcoin days was the now-infamous legal battle with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, documented in the 2010 film The Social Network. While at Harvard, the Winklevosses conceived a social network, ultimately dubbed ConnectU, for which they began working with Zuckerberg. Yet Zuckerberg soon opened the well-known Facebook platform, sparking the legal fight that resulted in a $65m settlement.

123  Other / Politics & Society / The real impact of the Vault 7 CIA data leak on: March 09, 2017, 01:54:40 PM
The leak of almost 9,000 documents detailing hacking and surveillance techniques used by the CIA is shocking, but not for the reasons many people think. Reading that your Smart TV or mobile phone could be monitoring what you say in your own house is alarming, but the real issue isn’t that the CIA spies on people. It’s not even that they do it through the devices in our homes.

The ease with which the code can be accessed and manipulated has created the real issue – that the source code, and the hacking tools used to access it is now available to anyone who wishes to use it. Criminals, hackers, terrorists, they all now have access to the hacking power wielded by the world’s most powerful intelligence agency.

124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin ETF Will be Approved Even if SEC Renders no Decision on: March 09, 2017, 09:01:16 AM
There is an interesting article I read saying that if SEC does not necessarily need to renders its decision by March 10 or 13, if they stay silent or did not make any rule, the rule will take effect automatically. To be honest, I'm not well versed on this kind of things so I don't know if this true or not. Maybe someone can shed light on this? He is getting technical on this issue and talking about Securities Exchange Act etc...

125  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-09]Investors chained to bitcoin bets as US ETF decision looms – Reuters on: March 09, 2017, 06:33:20 AM
Investors are betting market regulators will approve what would be the first U.S. exchange-traded fund to track the price of bitcoin.

From investment funds to wealthy individuals and even a Las Vegas strip club, the bitcoin ETF is generating a lot of buzz for a financial product. The surge in interest in the digital currency is driving upbeat outlooks from several gauges of investor sentiment on the proposed fund. Investors Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have an application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for the digital currency ETF, which was filed nearly four years ago. The twins are expected to receive by March 13 the final decision on whether they can list their ETF on the Bats Exchange. "We have spoken to a number of our investors, particularly from the U.S., who have indicated to us that they have been buying bitcoin," said Daniel Masters, portfolio manager of Global Advisors Bitcoin Investment Fund Plc.

126  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-08]Investors Who Missed Bitcoin Rally Go for Dash, Ether, Monero on: March 08, 2017, 03:17:13 PM
With bitcoin on a tear, Mira Kwon decided there’s more money to be made elsewhere. A little over a month ago, the University of Maryland economics graduate began pouring more than $2,000 into a different crypto-currency called dash.

“Bitcoin is expensive,” Kwon, a mother, investor, Korean interpreter and U.S. Army veteran, said in a telephone interview. “I think dash has a bigger growth rate.”

So far, it’s worked. Dash has risen to $46 from $15.20 when Kwon started, according to prices at CoinMarketCap. With a market value of $326 million, dash has become the third-largest crypto-currency, behind bitcoin and ether. Other digital currencies are on the move, too, including monero and zcash, to name some of the 700-plus out there. Investors who feel they missed out on bitcoin are seeking a different path to crypto-riches.

128  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-07] Bitcoin plunges sharply and suddenly on: March 07, 2017, 01:56:55 PM

Bitcoin plunged by more than $100 in a matter of minutes on Tuesday morning. The cryptocurrency was down about 1.5% at $1,260 a coin just after 6 a.m. ET before tumbling below $1,160 within 30 minutes. As of 7:12 a.m. ET it was down 5%, or $62, near $1,218 a coin.

While no headlines can be directly tied to the plunge, about two hours earlier a Bloomberg headline cited a People's Bank of China official as suggesting the recent bitcoin regulation wasn't temporary.

The PBOC recently announced it was cracking down on bitcoin trading, and China's largest bitcoin exchanges have since introduced a flat 0.2% fee on each transaction and announced a blockage of withdrawals.

Tuesday's sell-off could also be tied to nervousness over a coming Securities and Exchange Commission ruling. The SEC is expected to issue a ruling on whether it will approve at least one of the three proposed bitcoin-focused exchange-traded funds by a Saturday deadline.

129  Other / Politics & Society / Philippines slams US drama for president's sexual advance on: March 07, 2017, 08:42:32 AM
Manila on Tuesday "strongly protested" at an American television drama for showing a fictional Philippine president making a sexual advance on the US secretary of state.

In the trailer for the latest edition of "Madam Secretary", the lead character punches "the Philippines' unconventional new president" in the face and gives him a bloody nose in reaction to his unwanted pass.
s
"I clobbered a world leader instead of saving a major regional agreement," the secretary of state says.

The Philippine embassy in Washington released a statement saying it had written to the producers of the show, the CBS network, to urgently request it "take the necessary corrective actions"

I have never seen the trailer yet but looks like CBS is riding on the popularity of Pres Duterte
to get ratings on their show.
130  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-07] Bitcoin Price Technical Analysis for 03/07/2017 – Reversal Underway on: March 07, 2017, 05:51:47 AM
Bitcoin Price Key Highlights

- Bitcoin price recently broke below a short-term ascending trend line visible on the 1-hour chart.
- This could be indicative of a reversal or a larger correction to a nearby support level.
- On the 4-hour time frame, bitcoin price is safely inside its ascending channel pattern.

Bitcoin price broke below a short-term support area but might still resume its climb if it bounces off the ascending channel bottom.

Technical Indicators Signals

The 100 SMA is above the longer-term 200 SMA so the path of least resistance is to the upside. In addition, the gap between the moving averages is widening to suggest strengthening bullish pressure. Also, the 100 SMA coincides with the channel support at $1100-1150, which is also a long-term area of interest.

Stochastic is pointing down to show that sellers are in control of bitcoin price action at the moment, possibly taking it all the way down to the channel bottom. A larger correction could last until the 200 SMA dynamic inflection point just slightly below $1100, but this would be the line in the sand for the uptrend.

RSI is also heading south to show that sellers have enough energy to push for losses. Once both oscillators hit the oversold regions and turn higher, buying pressure could return and allow bitcoin price to regain ground back to the channel resistance at $1300 or at least halfway until $1200.

131  Other / Politics & Society / North Korea fires four ballistic missiles into sea, angering Japan and South on: March 06, 2017, 12:36:18 PM
North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan's northwest on Monday, angering South Korea and Japan, days after it promised retaliation over U.S.-South Korea military drills it sees as a preparation for war.

South Korea's military said the missiles were unlikely to have been intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), which can reach the United States. The missiles flew on average 1,000 km (620 miles) and reached a height of 260 km (160 miles).

Some of the missiles landed in waters as close as 300 km (190 miles) from Japan's northwest coast, Japan's Defence Minister Tomomi Inada said in Tokyo.

Bitcoin is not vulnerable to Quantum computer attacks, Andreas Antonopoulos has confirmed.

Speaking in a Q&A session, the celebrated commentator explained how Bitcoin’s hashes are resistant to quantum algorithms, making it all but impossible to infiltrate it with current technology.

“We don’t have very good algorithms for breaking hashes with quantum computing,” he said.

Responding to a question regarding whether the US National Security Agency, hereinafter NSA, had the quantum technology to crack Bitcoin, Antonopoulos simply replied, “yes,” but that they wouldn’t use it for that purpose.

“It is certain that the NSA has already built quantum computers. Google has one in their data center, and if they have one, the NSA has one that’s ten times better,” he continued.

“...Do they use that to break Bitcoin? The simple answer is ‘no.’”

134  Other / Politics & Society / Tony Blair denies pitch to be Trump's Middle East envoy on: March 05, 2017, 01:44:09 PM
The denial comes after the Mail on Sunday reported that the former British prime minister met the president's son-in-law and key adviser, Jared Kushner, at the White House last week.
The paper claims the meetings were to discuss working for Mr Trump.
Mr Blair's office said the story was an "invention" and that he continues to work for peace "in a private capacity".
After he left Downing Street in 2007, Mr Blair took the role of Middle East envoy for the Quartet Group, made up of the European Union, US, Russia and United Nations.
His spokesman said: "Mr Blair has made no such 'pitch' to be the president's Middle East envoy.

The year 2017 hasn’t turned out to be a great one for few information technology solutions providers. In the past few weeks, two major incidents have made the customers take a step back and reevaluate their contingency plans.

Online platforms experienced severe disruptions and tense days after two of the leading providers, Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services faced issues. The whole Cloudflare incident labelled as “Cloudbleed” was caused by a bug in the system which potentially compromised the privacy of a small group of users. According to certain reports, over 1.2 million users on over 3,400 websites including the likes of Uber and OKCupid were affected by the memory leak.

Cloudflare’s services are used by a majority of the cryptocurrency platforms. The possible leak of sensitive information including passwords, encryption keys, messages, IP addresses and HTTPs requests due to Cloudbleed has got them concerned. Many exchanges and cryptocurrency services have started sending emails to their customers, asking them to take precautions to prevent any unauthorized access to their accounts.

137  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-04]A (Short) Guide to Blockchain Consensus Protocols on: March 04, 2017, 01:43:43 PM
We hear plenty of talk of how public blockchains are going to change the world, but to function on a global scale, a shared public ledger needs a functional, efficient and secure consensus algorithm.

A consensus algorithm, like bitcoin's proof of work (the one we hear about most often), does two things: it ensures that the next block in a blockchain is the one and only version of the truth, and it keeps powerful adversaries from derailing the system and successfully forking the chain.

In proof of work, miners compete to add the next block (a set of transactions) in the chain by racing to solve a extremely difficult cryptographic puzzle. The first to solve the puzzle, wins the lottery. As a reward for his or her efforts, the miner receives 12.5 newly minted bitcoins – and a small transaction fee.

138  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-04]What Bitcoin Lacks to Become Major Currency on: March 04, 2017, 07:20:40 AM
Over the past few months, the Bitcoin community has been debating about the purpose of the Bitcoin network. Is it supposed to serve its global network of users as a settlement network? Or should it perform as digital gold for investors using it as a safe haven asset and to process large sums of money?

Bitcoin is best described as a peer-to-peer digital currency. Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto described the Bitcoin network in its official white paper as an electronic cash system designed to facilitate payments from one party to another without the presence of a mediator or financial institution.

Growing mempool
Processing transactions within a peer-to-peer network with a complete absence of mediators, network administrators and third-party participants is difficult, expensive and technologically challenging, which is the reason why Bitcoin needs an open source community of developers to maintain its codebase.

Bitcoin is still at its early stage of development and adoption. Anonymity is yet to be introduced to Bitcoin users and scalability is an urgent problem still to be dealt with by Bitcoin developers within the open source community.

Currently, Bitcoin operates as digital gold. Average transaction fees are valued at $0.32 per transaction and the network requires at least one hour for a transaction to be verified. As of late, the traditional system of transaction approval based on six confirmations from miners has been delayed due to the Bitcoin network’s limited block size and growing mempool of transactions.

The UN-linked International Narcotics Control Board on Thursday condemned the use of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines, where President Rodrigo Duterte's much-criticized war on drugs has claimed more than 6,500 lives.

Duterte was elected in 2016 after promising to eradicate drugs in society. Since June, police have reported killing more than 2,550 people while more than 4,000 others have died in unexplained circumstances.

In a new annual report, the INCB said that "extrajudicial action, purportedly taken in pursuit of drug control objectives, is fundamentally contrary to the provisions and objectives" of international drug conventions.
