1  Other / Meta / BTCTalkAccounts buying selling pawning bitcointalk.org user accounts?! MODS? on: June 12, 2013, 12:52:21 PM
Please tell me this is not allowed.   Please tell me you will handle this.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=224745.msg2450505#msg2450505

User BTCTalkAccounts is buying selling and pawning accounts on this forum.

That way the scammers can buy their way into a brand new Full Member account, while the newbies sit in prison.

That's bullshit.
2  Other / Politics & Society / Pardon Edward Snowden Petition on: June 10, 2013, 12:40:33 PM
This courageous whistle blower has completely uprooted his life and risked his freedom to expose the illegal NSA wiretapping program.  Let's make a statement that we want to keep honest people here in the US and not chase them away to China or Iceland.  He has currently fled to Hong Kong to avoid 'detainment' and then heavy handed legal tactics which would likely completely destroy his life.

4  Other / Meta / # of Posts limit for spamming ALT Coins? on: May 20, 2013, 07:34:05 PM
This forum is grinding to a halt with all the spamcoins, giveaways, and ALT coin trades.

Could there be a posting limit for new coins?  I'd say like #250 or something, so people with 12 posts aren't creating spamcoins.

I don't know what the 'donations' to the forum have gone to, but I'd love to know that too. What is the total, what are you doing with it?

What is the state of this place?  Should we attempt to jump ship to a new forum?  Should we kick out alt coins?  Should you kick me out?

I don't know the answers, but I'd love some input.

Cheers,
deadweasel

5  Other / Off-topic / IRC, Freenode, Bitcoin, and you! on: May 14, 2013, 06:39:11 PM
Hi Folks,

A couple of things have come to light for me:

  1) The administrators of the Freenode network are unpaid volunteers

  2) Bitcoin Channels are being targeted in the Denial of Service attack against Freenode (<---unconfirmed FUD, I have discovered later)

  3) The Bitcoin community relies on Freenode as an exchange (#bitcoin-otc), support counter(#cgminer, #bitfunder, #ozcoin, #bitcoin-assets, #bitcoin-dev, etc.), and most of all it creates a community of people working together on differnt Bitcoin Projects.

Those of use who feel a kinship and responsiblity to our IRC brethren should do what little we can to ease the strain that our fledgling currency has put on the Freenode network.

If the PDPC existed still, we would simply flood them with BTC donations, unfortunately this is not the case.  The PDPC was dissolved when the Freenode network moved the the UK and its one paid employee pass away.  There is no longer a non-profit org to donate to.  The only thing left is our time and server support.

http://blog.freenode.net/2013/03/bye-bye-pdpc/

If you are an IRC smarty, consider donating your time:

http://freenode.net/volunteering.shtml

If you have an unused server somewhere or could spawn an instance w/out inflicting major costs, considering running an ircd server:

http://freenode.net/hosting_ircd.shtml

What ideas come to mind for supporting Freenode beyond these?  Do you think we should allow Freenode to be DOSed until it adapts or we jump to a new IRC network?  Other thoughts?
6  Economy / Services / Looking to purchase profitable trading bot on: April 20, 2013, 09:25:15 PM
This is a long shot.

Doesn't have to be a big profit, just something I can make sure is working for me while i sleep.

I currently use goxtool and would prefer a strategy.py implementation.  But if it's easier some other way, convince me.

I figure name your price and we go from there.   PMs only.

8  Economy / Gambling / Bitbet.us --> New Bitcoin Related Bets Posted Here! on: April 05, 2013, 02:11:10 PM
Bias and motivation:

I win bets there and make BTC.  I like it so much I even own some shares of the company (had to re-appropriate funds for other ventures).  Also, I'll be using reflinks and hopefully you'll use them so my time is well spent updating this list.  Now that's out of the way, what are some of the more interesting bets?

-------------------------------

BTC at $200 USD before end of April?!

LTC will move to .1 BTC by May 1st

Bitfinex insolvent by end of April

Bitcoin price to rise above $500 by the end of 2013

A third competitor company to BFL and Avalon will enter & deliver to the ASIC mining market in 2013

S.DICE Profit to increase in April

Bitcoin price to rise above $1000

Litecoin will top 5$ in 2013

BTC/USD Exchange Rate to top $100.00 at 23:59 May 31st 2013

-------------------------------

Some Tips and Tricks:

1.  Early bets get heavier 'weight', meaning more of the winnings go to you than later bets.
2.  Make sure the return BTC address can receive BTC..  Avoid MtGox, use a hot wallet with not too much BTC in it.
3.  Hedge your bets -- if you're betting on the price of BTC, maybe buy some puts or calls in the opposite direction on CoinBr
4.  Never bet more than you are willing to lose.
5.  Don't bet on closed or very nearly closing bets -->  your BTC will be considered a donation if not in before closing time.
6.  Have fun and make BTC!   Grin

Feel free to PM me with Questions.   Cheesy
9  Economy / Service Discussion / Coinbase is "Down for maintenance" -- Missing 100BTC sent 10 hours ago. on: February 16, 2013, 02:19:38 AM
Sent 100BTC from Coinbase.com today at 11:15 AM eastern time to Blockchain.info.  Was in PENDING all day.  Now coinbase is "down for maintenance".

Pending in their sense meant not yet included in a block.  Unfortunately I see a .10BTC deposit to my address about 5 hours later.  Not expected from anyone at all, never get these.

Very scared about this.

No response to support emails sent about changes to their service that were sent 3 days ago as well as today.

Anyone want to chime in with their experience?

10  Economy / Service Discussion / Havelockinvestments.com: Who are they and why would anyone trust them? on: January 18, 2013, 05:08:23 PM
I can't find anything about havelock investments that would convince me to trust them with my bitcoins.  I don't see havelock investments thread here that convinces me this is anything but another scam.

https://www.havelockinvestments.com/contact.php

Has pretty basic and easily faked stuff.  I know they are a mining group, but that doesn't convince me to invest in their shares.

Bitcoin reviews single comment doesn't give me any trust either:

http://www.thebitcoinreview.com/site.php?site_id=965

Who are they?

If you have invested with them, what made you feel safe enough to invest your bitcoins?

Why can't I find any real information about them?

What is your personal opinion?

Thanks in advance -- I very much want to invest in SDICE but none of the available options put me at ease enough to do so.
11  Other / Meta / Is there a way to filter keywords in this forum? on: January 17, 2013, 06:09:19 PM
I like to watch the recent posts roll in but I get a headache watching all the ASIC bullshit and few other items.

If there is, great!  If not, let's include it in the new forum software, if it ever gets 'delivered'.

Gracias.
12  Economy / Service Discussion / Coinbase is down on: January 16, 2013, 06:58:27 PM
Coinbase is down.  Wanted to get in at 14.4 but couldn't login.  Very sad.   Undecided

14  Economy / Economics / Defaltionary Spiral -- Is there a way to make this workout? (hoarding bitcoins) on: October 18, 2012, 07:12:45 PM
I am ignorant on all the ins and outs of this.  I am posting this to try to learn what the possible economic outcome is of bitcoin.  I am prompted by this comment from the 'Hoarding Bitcoins' 'study' that hit slashdot and everywhere else.   Huh

Comment:
"So what you're saying is that there is a limited resource which we cannot make more of that people are hording? And the more people horde it, the higher the deflation? And people watch their value rise in USD as this happens? And you're surprised?

What motive is there to spend your BTC? Isn't this how deflationary spirals [wikipedia.org] occur? Wasn't this an effect of The Great Depression and lead to FDR implementing a pump-priming strategy [wikipedia.org]?

Could someone explain how they would escape that spiral? I'm not an economist so I don't know if there are other routes of which I'm unaware."

What are the economists thoughts on this?  Could small businesses such as satoshidice and webhosting for bitcoins spark an actual economy?  Or is this just a long term pump and dump?

EDIT:  I was made aware below that the article being commented on was funded by institutions that have something to lose if bitcoin goes primetime.  Does anyone have information about this?
