1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / blockchain.com BTC wallet "affected by a third party software security issue" on: November 28, 2023, 12:06:15 PM
https://login.blockchain.com/en/#/home is telling me:

Quote
The following legacy addresses have been identified as possibly affected by a third party software security issue. To secure these funds, click the ‘Transfer Funds’ button below. This will mover the funds from the legacy addresses into new, secure addresses in your DeFi Wallet.

It is my main BTC wallet, there is only option to "Transfer funds". When i click it, it says: There was an issue transferring your funds. Please contact Support.
Then i end up at https://support.blockchain.com/hc/en-us/sections/4585337100180-Account-Security

Do you have any security-wise suggestion. Is now good time to import my wallet into an Linux desktop wallet app https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet?step=5&platform=linux&important=transparency ? I am very rarely using the wallet, just storing my BTC there.

3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / When will Bitcoin be more energy efficient? on: December 08, 2017, 01:56:34 PM

According to environment news site Grist, if the currency’s growth continues on its current trajectory, it will use as much as the entire USA in just 18 months’ time.

By July 2019, the bitcoin network will require more electricity than the entire United States currently uses. By February 2020, it will use as much electricity as the entire world does today.

(August 2019 update: wrong, "Recent published estimates of bitcoin’s electricity consumption are wide-ranging, on the order of 20‑80 TWh annually, or about 0.1-0.3% of global electricity use" (Ireland is 26TWh) - source)

Quote
Bitcoin network consumes at least 2.55 GW of electricity currently, and that it could reach a consumption of 7.67 GW in the future, making it comparable with countries such as Ireland (3.1 GW) and Austria (8.2 GW).

(seems correct nearly 2 years later according to iea.org article linked above)

Other person thinks digiconomist numbers are wrong and power consumption is much lower:

hypothetical Bitcoin market cap of $1 trillion still fails to incentivize miners to consume more than 800 TWh per year, or 0.74% of the world's consumption of energy

4  Bitcoin / Mining / What is the power needed to complete one transaction? (aka CO2 footprint) on: October 25, 2016, 03:35:08 PM
Someone said: "The current transaction fee for BTC is over $6 per transaction. Only supported by the large amount of inflation BTC currently has."

So i see one transaction might be CO2 emission intensive task..

What is the kWh electricity consumption of one BTC transaction?

https://s20.postimg.org/8ts7gv9zh/bitcoin_electricity_consumption.jpg

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DIFC8qdXoAAmnzI.jpg

Above image (src) shows that electricity consumed by a single transaction is 166KWh. Another source claims 94 kWh.

Quote
A new index has recently modeled potential energy costs per transaction as high as 94 kWh, or enough electricity to power 3.17 households for a day. To put it another way, that's almost enough energy to fully charge the battery of a Tesla Model S P100D, the world's quickest production car, and drive it over 300 miles.
Shocked

According to this calculator, 10kWh is 4 kg CO2e

If we count one transaction needs 100 kWh, then it is 10x4=40 kg CO2, happy global warming.. But not only that but also health impact of the coal burning and CO2 to mine and transport it. To create solar panels and recycle them at the end of the life.

Another quote:
"Doh | Each bitcoin transaction is backed by approx 90% of an American household's daily electricity consumption"

Googling "average household electricity consumption daily" i see numbers of around 10-30KWh/day for a household electricity consumption.
5  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / How cryptocurrency can be killed & people money lost? on: October 03, 2016, 08:20:28 AM
Hello,

not sure if all cryptocurrency have same kind of "protection" against this, but im mainly interested in Ethereum and Bitcoin now.

If 20 years old person wan to use BTC and ETH cryptocurrencies to store main part of his/her life savings for next 60 years, how big risk is there the developers of the cryptrocurrency will steal his money or cryptocurrency will "bankrupt" some way so his json wallet key file will become useless?

How the cryptocurrency can be damaged so people loose 60-100% of their money saved there?

I would like to evaluate risks saving money in cryptocurrency for the term of tens of years. Thank You
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Long time to sync block chain, can i get my money out? on: September 23, 2016, 08:48:52 AM
Hello,

i downloaded an altcoin software https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases
And it offered me to create wallet, then invited me to fund it. I sent a few dollars thru Shapeshift.io exchange.
But then blockchain syncing started
And it is around 5 days, 100% HDD usage and i may not be in the middle of the sync!
So my question is if i can withdraw money from my wallet without completing the sync? How? (update: here is the way, go to https://www.myetherwallet.com/#send-transaction and upload your wallet keystore file located in Win+R , %appdata% , Ethereum\keystore ; in my case Wind10 it is at C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\Ethereum\keystore)

When i open Windows App, it shown no wallets inside
Or if possible how to do some fast sync on the Linux and then transfer downloaded block chain data to my Windows computer?

Windows 10:
C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\Ethereum\chaindata - 010009.ldb ...
C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\Ethereum\keystore - 3 files like: UTC--2016-09-19T11-17-48.380481800Z--someLongPhrasseHere
So far the size of App folder is 20GB :-(
I have some RAM free, but found no configurable option to define higher RAM cache

----
As mentioned, while i was able to Withdraw my wallet just by having keystore file, i can just one-time backup this file and then be able to use/withdraw wallet just having this keystore file right?
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Computer based wallet, what if i loose HDD but have very old backup? on: September 19, 2016, 12:35:45 PM
Hello,

when i download Bitcoin application, create wallet from within it, then i backup whole application folder to external drive.

Then i deposit some coins into wallet and after some time, primary hard drive is lost and so i restore old app backup from time i had no coins in the wallet.

Will that mean i lost money on the wallet? In which file is stored most important data that i want to backup and protect?
8  Bitcoin / Legal / Coins from drugs, how big problem for coin mixing/coinjoin service users? on: September 18, 2016, 07:01:48 AM
Hello,

assuming coin mixing services like Tor Helix and other coin mixing services are used to launder money obtained in exchange for illegal drugs, when i use that service (which i assume is not illegal to do) and receive some dirty satoshi's (part of the drug money), how big problem (legal) is it for me if i withdraw (SEPA,WIRE) these coins thanks to service like Kraken which hold verified personal data of me?

Would it make any difference if i use clearnet based bitcoin mixer? I want to highlight that i would not know coins are from drug and i will probably not receive whole drug money, just fraction thanks to nature how mixing services works.
------------

Money transfer:
DRUG ADDICT ---> DRUG SELLER ---> Mixing/coinjoin service distribute money directly to the wallets of me and other people ---> Kraken.com --> My bank account
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Zero confirmations, im being warned on: August 30, 2016, 08:25:57 AM
Hello,

spectrocoin.com is the bitcoin payment gateway provider for the online merchants warns me before marking invoices paid without BTC confirmations - 0/zero confirmations, just based on the fact transation appeared on the blockchain (i came with this idea nd my BTC knowledge is low, it may work different way):

Quote
If you need to make paymet "paid" in the system immediately after it appear on the blockchain, you can do it, but we not support this method, because it is unsafe.
...
this is not good Idea, we not support this method. Becose here is to much risk and you can be scammed
...
WE NOT SUPPORT THIS METHOD, AND THIS IS YOUR OWN DECISION!

So i wanted to ask here how unsafe is it to do it my way, without confirmations being small online service provider.
10  Economy / Web Wallets / Blockchain.info - Authorize log-in attempt - someone know my password? on: August 16, 2016, 12:54:30 PM
Hello,

i received "Authorize log-in attempt" e-mail from blockchain and they says: "If this login attempt was not made by you it means someone visited your wallet login page from an unrecognised browser."

IP Address: TOR Hidden Service
Browser: Mozilla
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0

it was not me who tried to login, so it mean that

a) someone know my password

or

b) someone know or guessed my identifier

?

Thank you
11  Other / Off-topic / My passwords are stolen when using Tor non-HTTPs ? on: March 13, 2016, 01:52:29 PM
Hello,

on http://en.bitcoinwiki.org/Tor i read:

Quote

if that is so, is there any way to prevent exit node see my password when login form support only HTTP ?

Or any plugin that notify me before submitting HTTP form password?

15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Anonymous Bitcoin source which do not know who am i and what was the BTC source? on: August 21, 2015, 02:45:44 PM
What are sources from which one can get Bitcoins while no one can prove for what/which purpose Bitcoins was sent and what was actual source of Bitcoins?

Im not looking for an anonymization service on which claims i have to relly. Im looking for something which do not logs any identifiable data about me from its nature.

Is there something like that and is there any country in which such a service is legal?

17  Economy / Currency exchange / Reliable Paypal&PM supplier / accepting Bitcoin, PerfectMoney, WesternUnion on: October 20, 2014, 10:48:28 PM
If you need an reliable long term paypal or PM (PerfectMoney) supplier for your bitcoin, it is me. 10 years in ecurrency world

To buy paypal or perfectmoney from me, you need to cover 10% fee (perfectmoney = 2% fee). Minimum exchange amount $50 (first testing amounts can be lower)

im quite daily online via googletalk, ym, icq, msn, i can be contacted via email or chat

im interested to deal only with clean persons who dont want to be bothered exchanging money in difficult way, instead doing quick exchanges via instant messenger or email. (i dont like wasting my time with paypal and bitcoin), you probably also want just money on paypal which you can spend for the things you like or things you need to pay.

PS: i may not monitor this topic so dont expect replies here. i provided my contact form in the link above. Thank you
