Since the big sell-off that occurred on December 11, the price of Bitcoin has steadily appreciated with some interesting price action along the way. The $442 area is now a fairly established pivot zone; acting twice as resistance and another two times as support.

There is another major pivot zone that can be observed on the 30-minute chart, which just happens to be preventing the market from breaking higher. Of course I am referring to $461.50. This level gave the market some pause on the 15th, and is now acting as resistance once again.

5  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-12] royalgazette.com : Understanding the concept of Bitcoin on: December 12, 2015, 12:35:33 PM
Introducing Bitcoin, the new, newest thing in the global medium of exchange. We know our current mediums as variously, cash in hand, stock values on a piece of paper, gold bars in a vault, sterling silver on our wrists, real property immovable on the ground, in the ground (oil, coal, diamonds), and under the sea.

The thing about Bitcoin is that as ordinary individuals, we may only have a vague idea of what Bitcoin is — gathered say from media commentary. Most of us don’t yet have a sense of whether such an intangible product is for real, no feeling for where it is, what it is, where it came from, whether it is something we will ever use, or whether it could possibly impact our financial lives.

Latham & Watkins, the world’s largest law firm with approximately 2,000 attorneys in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia has recently released a research on today’s enforcement trends in cryptocurrency.

Since the beginning of 2015, an increasing number of government and law enforcement agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) have attempted to regulate the circulation of bitcoin and restrict the operations of cryptocurrency-related businesses and startups.

Virtual currencies have become a haven for black market entrepreneurs, for libertarians in love with privacy and, apparently, for those with a penchant for financial fraud. The federal government puts Homero Joshua Garza in the final group.
A digital entrepreneur, Garza launched a computer repair company while still in high school. By age 21, he was running two tech companies with more than 20 employees. Last year, still not yet 30, Garza was being described by a national publication as a "cryptocurrency tycoon" who had launched his own competitor to Bitcoins — a virtual currency called Paycoin.

9  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-1212] Judge Judy Just Doesn’t Understand Bitcoin on: December 12, 2015, 03:34:44 AM
Judge Judy is arguably the face of daytime justice. Those of us who have worked from home or gone through a period of unemployment or maybe just taken a day off likely have a story of turning on the television and seeing Judy Sheinlin stare down at some unsuspecting defendant from her short-rimmed glasses with an angry and accusatory look, haranguing them for their less-than-stellar behavior. No doubt Scheindlin is a smart woman who can figure out just about anything in the eyes of the court. Recently, however, she came across something that she admits to knowing nothing about: bitcoin.

10  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-05 Alleged Silk Road accomplice arrested in Thailand on: December 05, 2015, 01:37:57 PM
NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A Canadian man was arrested Friday in Thailand as an alleged "senior adviser" to the creator of Silk Road, an online black market where illegal drugs, weapons and goods were sold.

Roger Thomas Clark, 54, is pending extradition to the United States on narcotic and money laundering charges for his alleged role in helping Ross Ulbricht create Silk Road, which allowed anonymous users to buy illegal goods and services with virtual currency Bitcoin. Ulbricht was sentenced in May to life in prison for running the site.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Clark, who went by the online monikers "Variety Jones," "VJ," "Cimon," and "Plural of Mongoose," advised Ulbricht and was considered his trusted "mentor." Federal prosecutors said Clark was paid "at least" hundreds of thousands of dollars to help Ulbricht improve and expand the website's technical infrastructure, create and enforce the site's rules and skirt law enforcement investigations.

"In that vein, Clark repeatedly advocated the use of intimidation and violence to keep members of the Silk Road support staff from cooperating with law enforcement," federal prosecutors said.

12  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-05] Lawyers' lives being made easier thanks to Bitcoin blockchain on: December 05, 2015, 08:33:48 AM
Lawyers' lives being made easier thanks to Stampery and the Bitcoin blockchain

Blockchain notarisation provider Stampery says one of its main user groups is lawyers dealing in sensitive documents. Stampery, released to the public barely a month ago, uses the Bitcoin blockchain to generate an immutable record of existence, integrity and ownership for any set of data - files, documents, pictures and emails.

Daniele Levi, CEO of Stampery, told IBTimes UK that there were three types of users emerging – lawyers looking to certify documents, creatives using it to establish rights ownership and businesses generating prior art of their intellectual property.

Levi said: "We were speaking to one Spanish lawyer who said this makes his life very easy. He receives a lot of documents, he does a lot of due diligence. He would receive documents on a CD which he would take to a Spanish notary to prove this was the set of documents he received on this specific day.

13  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-05] Suspected adviser to Silk Road creator arrested on: December 05, 2015, 08:16:35 AM
A Canadian man has been arrested in Thailand for his supposed involvement as a senior adviser to an illegal website. Silk Road was an online black marketplace that was used to illicit drugs.

Roger Thomas Clark was arrested on December 3, facing extradition to the US on charges related to his role in helping Ross Ulbricht, the convicted creator of Silk Road.
A criminal complaint had been filed in federal court in Manhattan, New York, under US Attorney Preet Bharara against the 54-year-old Canadian citizen. An IRS agent documented that Clark had helped to sell heroin, cocaine and other drugs online on the Silk Road platform between January 2011 and October 2013.
Authorities said that during that time Clark went by the online alias "Variety Jones."

14  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-05] Bitcoin in Another Uneventful Session on: December 05, 2015, 08:10:54 AM
Bitcoin had another uneventful trading session. On BTC-E we opened at $356.84. While we hit a high of $359.89 and a low of $352.88 during the day, ultimately prices went nowhere and we closed at $356.99 dollars per coin. We are currently quoted at $356.77 on this exchange.

n OKCoin we saw a similar session, with highs of $365.00 and a low at $354.24 dollars. Prices closed $3.20 higher at $364 dollars flat. Futures on the same platform advanced about $3 dollars as well and they’re currently quoted at $367 for the nearer and $372 for the further-out contract.

As we can see on the chart above, BTC/USD has been trading flat for the past two and half days. In the process prices have remained wedged inside a symmetrical triangle. The top of this formation is around $360/$361 dollars on BTC-E ($364/$365 on OKCoin) and the bottom is around $352/$353 dollars ($355/$356 OKCoin). But while a move beyond either price extreme may have some follow-through, the breakout points are set a bit higher/lower. This is especially true for the lower bound of the triangle.

On the downside, a move below the triangle lows would quickly bump into the $340-$350 support area. A breakdown below here could lead to some losses. All these levels are for OKCoin’s spot USD exchange. In order to see a sustained downtrend however, the the $307 swing low has to give way as well. Notable support levels below here include $300 dollars (weak), $290 and $278 dollars per coin.

For a sustainable rally, a decisive break of the $383 swing high is needed. Further up the next resistance is set at the $400 dollars round figure. A breakout above here could lead to extended gains towards $450 dollars per coin.

15  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-05] Finally, interesting uses for the blockchain that go beyond bitcoin on: December 05, 2015, 08:05:39 AM
Most people who have heard the term think that the “blockchain” is only something to do with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, litecoin, doguecoin and others. It’s the technology that underpins digital currencies and ensures that all transactions are properly conducted and recorded. But what is stored on the blockchain need not be just a currency unit – it can be put to all manner of other interesting uses.

The blockchain is defined as “a system that’s secure without a higher authority, distributed across many strangers' computers, yet tamper-proof, and promises a mechanism for trust mediated directly between individuals.” Essentially, by providing a distributed means to guarantee and verify transactions, the blockchain offers the ultimate opportunity to cut out the middleman.

The international trade in counterfeit goods is growing at an alarming rate. The International Chamber of Commerce estimates that the total value of counterfeit and pirated products could be as much as US$1.77 trillion in 2015.

With more counterfeit goods on the market, consumers have an even greater need to find trust suppliers, and quality information since there are many dangers in using counterfeit products.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) warns consumers against buying counterfeit goods which can cost them more than just financial loss. Using counterfeit goods can cause illness, disability or even death. For example, some fraudulent medicines have been found to contain highly toxic substances such as rat poison, according to the UNODC.

Food is another area where trust is paramount. Tainted milk formula containing melamine, a chemical normally used in plastics, made 300,000 Chinese babies ill in 2008, about 54,000 of which were hospitalized and six died. There have also been cases where rat poison and other dangerous chemicals have been found in food, where other more expensive and legitimate additives should have been.

17  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-12-4] Even China's crypto-brothers don't entirely agree onscaling Bitcoin on: December 04, 2015, 06:35:59 AM
Next week in Hong Kong (6-7 December) some of the biggest players involved in Bitcoin will try to reach agreement on how to shape the cryptocurrency to successfully meet mainstream adoption in the future.

A major point of contention is the size of the blocks in which bitcoin transactions are batched, on average every 10 minutes by the network. This is currently limited to 1MB. Put in the simplest terms, increasing blocksize is a necessary part of the scaling up of Bitcoin to become comparable to the sort of transaction capabilities of other payment systems.

The second Scaling Bitcoin workshop hopes to move the debate closer to consensus on how best to increase Bitcoin's capacity, in particular because most of the Chinese bitcoin mining industry will be represented at the event - a factor missing from the first meet-up which happened earlier this year in Montreal.

Much has been made this week of the news that combined trading on bitcoin exchanges has reached a record high. As the BTC/USD exchange rate has climbed towards $400, so exchange volume has risen to close to 4 million bitcoin a day. As this Coindesk article points out, there are some who believe that the reported numbers are questionable and may be inflated by “fake trades” designed to give some exchanges the appearance of liquidity but, as with price, trading volume is not the metric to which those who believe in the future of bitcoin should be paying attention.

Crypto currency bitcoin is gaining popularity in India, especially among companies and high-net worth individuals, for buying and selling, or as an asset.

There are now online wallets that allow one to trade, buy vouchers of e-commerce companies, and even recharge one’s phone in bitcoin. Ahmedabad-based mobile wallet Zebpay allows one to buy, store, send and spend bitcoins through cell phone numbers.

“One can park money in the wallet in the hope that the value of bitcoins would go up. So in a way, it is like an asset class,” said Sandeep Goenka, co-founder and chief operating officer, Zebpay.

He added that companies and wealthy individuals have expressed interest in buying bitcoin as an asset class.

According to the Zebpay website, one bitcoin was valued at Rs 23,019.

I became interested in Bitcoin during the fall of 2013, while leading the inside sales team for Oracle ORCL -2.70% open source support in Kansas and Iowa. Our territory isn’t the first states that come to mind when one thinks of technology and financial innovation; our customers were the excellent university systems, as well as staid financial service companies and enterprises in Des Moines and the western suburbs of Kansas City.

Starting in August I watched every video and read every white paper I could get my hands on that contained the all important keyword “blockchain”, which I had learned was the underlying technology enabling Bitcoin. I attended Bitcoin related events in the Bay Area and I shared my fascination at work, so much so that my coworkers began calling me “that Bitcoin guy”. Across the hall, so to speak, in the technology side of Oracle was another Bitcoin guy, John Lindsay. A mutual friend noticed our shared interest, arranged for an introduction, and we began plotting.

The field was already full of cryptocurrency exchanges, wallets, and payment processors. We engaged in a gap analysis, looking for something unique that would have ongoing transactions, which didn’t depend on speculation. John realized that there was nothing happening in terms of payroll processing. Remember that in late 2013 each Bitcoin was worth over $1,000 and bitcoin insiders believed that mass adoption was right around the corner.
