42  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Tags (offline address - or a way to explicitly freeze an address - part 2) on: March 02, 2013, 01:00:09 AM
Frozen / Locked / Offline addresses

tl;dr - "vijay" <uniquebits://vijay>

All I want is to have single unique id, to use it for my BTC transactions, like this above link, that would return my then current bitcoin address (or whatever I set).  Grin

And yes, this would make all my transactions "nonymous", but that's ok with me.

https://blockchain.info/tags

This is another way to implement what I was asking for. now I can't casually own and use single bitcoin address forever, but this solves my problem in a different way.

If allowed to retag, I can associate my tags with new addresses. I think, that's not possible now, and it is only blockchain.info specific.

Interestingly blockchain.info allows to tag multiple addresses with the same tag name.

This is not the same as offline / frozen addresses, but I can use new address everytime.

but, firstbits was so cute.. Cry
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin unit name suggestions on: March 01, 2013, 04:26:13 AM
Bitcoin unit name suggestions,

1. using single currency symbol; subfix / superfix 1, 2, 3 to distinguish among micro / mega units

2. get two symbols approved; B & b. BTC 0.1=1b100; 0.003=1b3; 0.00004=2b40; 0.000000009=3b9; 1234=1B1.234; 5670000=2B5.67

Makes any sense? Roll Eyes

46  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Cheep devices for offline address generation on: February 27, 2013, 03:36:58 PM
old (>2010) nokia phones, with Symbian S60. ($20 - $30)
opera mini + offline bitaddress.org
With no SIM, WiFi & Bluetooth (or, turned off)

Technically, other phones could also be useful.

47  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / offline address - or a way to explicitly freeze an address on: February 25, 2013, 01:54:44 AM
Frozen / Locked / Offline addresses

What is a 'frozen' address?
An address locked for spending (but yet it can receive money)

Why you want to 'freeze' an address?
To prevent spending in case of stolen / compromised private key

How is that possible?
Simple. protect it with another key.

How you protect this 'freeze' key?
Generate offline. Use one key only once (twice, for lock and unlock)

but, turtles all the way down?
two turtles better than one turtle?  Roll Eyes

What is made possible now by this 'freezing'?
you can use your cool firstbits address forever without worrying about stolen key

Why so much attachment to some random bit, after all it is free?
may be it is trivial in my case (1vijay), but what about these firstbits 1, 1paypall, 1citi, 1microsoft, 1google, etc.

Is this some kind of planned loophole / backdoor that allows access to .. ?
no, only who can spend can freeze

How safe is this 'frozen' address ?
the safest; safer than a paper wallet

Safer than a paper wallet?
yes, spending is prevented by implementations

The safest, huh?
yes, hm.. I mean, only as safe as your 'freeze' key

How will this be implemented?
A team working on this (now, its only me)

I want this to be implemented, what can I do?
let the world know. participate in the poll of this thread

51  Economy / Trading Discussion / Is it possible for an exchange to manipulate prices for own profit? on: February 20, 2013, 05:31:01 AM
Is it possible for Mtgox, or some other exchange to manipulate BTC price, by introducing fake buy / sell orders?

As far as I know, all trades that happen within exchange need not be logged in to block chain. Even if it is logged in blockchain, it is equally impossible to know the exchange rate.  Sad
52  Other / Beginners & Help / Firstbits address transfer proposal on: February 18, 2013, 07:59:21 AM

Abstract

To enable users to transfer ownership of firstbits address to others

Motivation

In case of compromised private key, or other reasons (for profit), to allow users (owner) of address

Use Cases

  1. companies or banks might want to use fancy firstbit addresses, 1google, 1citi, 1paypal or 1, etc.
  2. compromised private key, so user wants to use different address with the same firstbits pattern

Procedure

when a user does a transaction and following three points are true,
    1. user transfers all (100%) BTC to new address
    2. to-address firstbits pattern matches with from-address
    3. from-address owns the current firstbits address

then, it is considered firstbits address ownership transfer

Considerations
  1. bitcoin APIs, https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Original_Bitcoin_client/API_Calls_list could optionally support usage of firstbits address

53  Other / Beginners & Help / Converting large amount of BTC to fiat on: February 15, 2013, 06:59:09 AM
No,  I am not converting. Smiley

Just saw this message from, Bitcoin Forum > Economy > Trading Discussion >  forum, by Rampion, and answering here as I am new to bitcointalk.  Sad

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=142156.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=80216

so,  here is my answer,

1. trade no more than 1BTC at a time
2. you can startwith 100BTC for first time (only once), so than you will have some fiat money in your account
3. choose an optimum amount, like, $0.1, $0.2, or $0.5 (this is difficult, but if you are in hurry choose less)
4. lets' say you have chosen, $0.2
5. If BTC/Fiat exchange rate is up, (like, $25.5 to $26.7), place 1BTC sell order
6. If BTC/Fiat exchange rate is down, (like, $25.5 to $26.3), place 1BTC buy order
7. in the end you would have got much better exchange rate

this is not the quick way, but you would earn much more profit this way.  Cool

all the best.
