21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin Core, Win7, BSOD on: July 11, 2015, 07:24:15 PM
So I've been installing Bitcoin Core v0.10.2 for over a week now on a 2Ghz AMD system having 4G ram and 1TB drivespace with Win7 Pro.  I've had to shut down repeatedly for BSOD failures.  It presently is installing but slowly after putting the Bitcoin Core into Win7 compatibility mode.  Is it running slowly, compared to non-compatibility mode, because of what's described in this article?  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2015/07/09/10624293.aspx

22  Economy / Service Discussion / MtGox on: July 03, 2015, 07:23:12 PM

Any rumors or changes in the MtGox situation?  When do I get my bitcoins back?
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin-qt reindexing again? on: June 30, 2015, 06:11:32 PM
I updated my bitcoin-qt and the newer version, Bitcoin Core, reindexed the blocks.  It shuts down every day and now today it says it has to reindex all the blocks again.

Yesterday I sent ~.1 btc to Coinbase.

Is this maintaining a blockchain getting abusive?  Some kind of scam to force the use of an online wallet that will incur charges?
24  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / small home mining, the future? on: March 21, 2015, 05:08:57 PM
So, where are we.  Home mining is only marginally profitable.  Small business owners running miners at work are only robbing Peter to pay Paul and it will probably become noticeable eventually.  But the large farms must pay rent and wages that the home miner doesn't - even if the large farms get their mining gear cheaper.  And that Novec ain't cheap.

Payout halves next year.  We've seen that as GH/s/$ decrease, the value of Bitcoin correspondingly decrease.  An optimist might project that when payout halves the value of Bitcoin will double.

But the large farms dump inefficient mining gear and buy huge lots of the most efficient.  Meanwhile for the home miner, getting the most efficient miners at a reasonable price is now met with delays or unavailability.

I'm expecting that next year when the payout halves, the competition between the large farms for a bigger share of the pie will intensify.  They will have no real incentive to see an effective doubling of Bitcoin value to match the halved payout.  Instead the best will work to drive the Bitcoin value down expecting large marginally profitable farms to quit.

So, home mining will continue until home heating isn't needed in the spring and remain off until it gets cold.  That or lose money.

I could be wrong.

25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Does Bitcon-QT use BONIC in any way? on: March 07, 2015, 06:10:17 PM
Does Bitcon-QT use BONIC in any way?
26  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / When payout per block halves, how will that effect difficulty? on: March 03, 2015, 02:31:59 AM

Difficulty is almost always rising.  Profit has gone to a low level compared to last year.  Miners get more efficient.  To stay profitable one must have an efficient miner.  How many early ASIC miners have already been retired for lack of efficiency.

So, when payout per block halves, if profit has been cut to a more fine margin at the current rate of 25btc/block, what happens?  Will difficulty change allowing power for solving a block to be halved?  Or will we all need to either stop mining or mine at a loss?
27  Bitcoin / Group buys / Would a group buy of solar panels be allowed in this forum? on: February 07, 2015, 04:46:54 PM
Living in landscape that's essentially a bowl having sides on the east, south and west is a bummer but if I cut down and sell the hardwood clearing most of the center I could put a sizable solar farm on my north side and the wood sale might pay a good chunk of cash.

Integrating solar energy with the power utility is a bear and they don't like it down here in rural Georgia, it cutting into their profits and all.  But, driving my 12vdc miners would seem ideal.  That with 12 volt marine batteries would work immediately and could be done without involving the power utility.  As it is my electric bill is 2½ times what it was this time in 2012.

So, would group buys of solar panels and marine batteries be allowed in this forum?
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin-qt network fee on: January 29, 2015, 03:14:27 PM
I maintain two copies of the blockchain, two running instances of bitcoin-qt.  The other day I sent 10.00 btc to Coinbase and was informed by bitcoin-qt that there would be a .0012 transaction free.  Fine.  Today I went to send roughly 9 btc and was told the fee was over 0.06 btc?  I don't understand the increase.
29  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / China mining farms on: January 21, 2015, 06:47:38 PM
I see from this Aug. 2014 article that another building was being added.  Has that come online?  What is the expectation of hashpower increase in China by mid-2015?  http://www.thecoinsman.com/2014/08/bitcoin/inside-one-worlds-largest-bitcoin-mines/

Are any more large farm additions anywhere in the world visibly on the horizon?

30  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin as an investment on: December 15, 2014, 05:36:02 PM
The long term slow drop in Bitcoin value, is it the result of bad press foist by banks or the dumping of mined Bitcoins by large farms like those associated with KnC?

A long slow decline is bad for miner/investors like myself who don't dump the mined Bitcoins.  But, it would seem ideal for owners of large farms who see the decline as reducing the number of users getting into mining and therefore the reduction in private purchase of mining gear.

Historically, since KnC's gear came on the market, the best thing to have done with the mined Bitcoins is to have dumped the Bitcoins for cash.  Did they foresee the result of constantly dumping the Bitcoins?  Would the slow decline in value have happened anyway?  We know the banks don't object to Bitcoin become useless as an investment.
31  Economy / Economics / So I'm staring at the MtGox 3 page post card, the loss, and IRS 2014 on: December 04, 2014, 05:05:24 PM

Any opinions as to the safest way to apply the MtGox loss to this year's income tax?  Perhaps a wash sale/repurchase of all BTC and apply the loss?
32  Economy / Economics / MtGox btc when? on: June 10, 2014, 03:51:31 PM

I would like to know a time frame for getting all or part of my 11.82627776 BTC from MtGox.  Getting on in years and want to buy a cemetery plot up in NY rather than stay down here.  That would go a long way to buying the plot and prepaying my shipping.  Still waiting for mullet sporting bounty hunters/skip tracers to haul Karpeles to the US, apprehension to be seen on TV, so he can appear before court.
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / exporting data from a cold storage wallet on: March 19, 2014, 05:11:06 PM

Not actually in cold storage, I backed up an encrypted wallet before moving to a larger hard drive.  The blockchain went south in the move so for the time being that bitcoin-qt isn't accessible.

Is there a way to extract the transaction data from the encrypted wallet backup aside from dropping it onto the blockchain.info wallet retrieval mechanism?
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Understanding a transaction page on blockchain.info on: March 12, 2014, 11:13:51 PM
I'm having a problem understanding the blockchain.info page on a transaction.

I enter the transaction ID into the blockchain.info search box.

I know how many BTC were sent in the transaction.  I know the approximate value of that send.  I see blockchain info can give a more precise dollar value of the particular transaction.

The problem is that the transaction shows six sends from my address, each roughly the value of the single transaction.  I don't understand.

----------------

Later....  Okay, I changed the readings from dollars to btc.  The btc sent is correct.  The value of the btc in the transaction can only be correct if calculated by today's current btc value rather than the btc value at the time of the transaction.

Wonder if there is a way to have the blockchain.info display the transaction with values at the time of the transaction.

I'd buy a blockchain.info for Dummies if one were offered.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / reindexing blockchain on: March 10, 2014, 02:26:07 PM
Had to migrate to a larger hard drive.  Did this not too long ago with another machine.  Seems prudent to have a backup.  Last time I had to rebuild the blockchain from a concatenated file of blocks from the other machine.  This time perhaps reindexing will suffice, time will tell.

I wonder if bitcoin-qt machinations while building or indexing the blockchain bear any resemblance to mining and if a way could be devised to dedicate a miner to rebuilding or reindexing then turning it over to the CPU so one could put the miner back to mining.
36  Bitcoin / Legal / US reporting mined btc to the tax man on: March 08, 2014, 03:17:31 PM
Is it true in the US the mined bitcoins must be reported without any reduction for mining costs, i.e. miner costs, power, and the value is what btc is valued at the time they were mined?

This seems grossly unfair for the hobbyist miner.  If mined bitcoins were only taxed when finally sold or bartered a retiree could pay those few extra thousand dollars in bills, that accrue each year from nothing more than living, by cashing in a few bitcoins without reaching a level of income that would be taxable.  As it is, paying tax on every bitcoin mined, tax will have been paid on those sold making up the difference between the retirement SS check and the taxable income level that for everyone else would be non-taxable income.

Last year and this will for most of us hobbyist miners be the only years with appreciable bitcoins mined.

37  Bitcoin / Legal / MtGox records versus Bitfloor records on: March 07, 2014, 05:15:55 PM
MtGox is not allowing users to view their trading histories and ongoing balance records.  Figuring tax now makes this very difficult.  My saved webpages of transactions records on MtGox seem obtuse and difficult.

Bitfloor stopped all trading last year.   My records there are clear.  One can still download statements of every month showing all transactions.  Working with those is much easier and those are completely available.  I suspect it was closed because US bitcoin buyers via BOA did panic with the April crash.  Too bad.

Who would have a problem with MtGox allowing its users to view their records?

38  Economy / Service Discussion / Firstbits not found on: March 06, 2014, 06:37:37 PM
Okay, I sent 1btc from MtGox to an address on 2/22/2013.  Not sure what that was about I went to blockchain.info and punched in the address.  The blockchain.info response was "Firstbits not found".

What does this mean?

Edit: It means I didn't enter the address properly.
39  Bitcoin / Legal / US income tax and MtGox on: March 02, 2014, 08:30:52 PM
Since MtGox declared bankruptcy I suppose we can't declare a loss on a US tax return until next year.  Nice that Coinbase was good and stable for a few days, $588-$580 around the time of the bankruptcy court session.  It looks like MrGox is claiming a basis value for the missing btc rather than market value.  Perhaps the new US tax code Ponzi scheme provision will be applicable after he answers the federal subpoena but again that would be for next years taxes.
40  Economy / Service Discussion / If MtGox can ident the Bitcoins, why not fix it? on: February 25, 2014, 03:01:37 PM
Given that every transaction is listed in the blockchain, why not identify the double spent Bitcoins and stop them in their tracks, make them worthless, and reissue the Bitcoins?  Or would that just pass the buck as it were, putting the bad debt where ever the stolen bitcoins are now?  It would be pretty difficult to spend that much money on merchandise that quickly.
