3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A big milestone - 2^70 hash operations on: May 12, 2013, 06:09:36 PM
The Bitcoin network reached a big milestone yesterday: it has performed over 270 (double) hashes since its conception.

Current count is:
1,191,253,457,820,256,820,938 = 270.01297 hashes

making it by far the most powerful distributed network computing system ever to have existed.
4  Economy / Games and rounds / 5 BTC giveaway! (Ended) on: May 06, 2013, 09:01:49 PM
Coinroll.it (Forum thread) is sponsoring a 5 BTC giveaway to lucky players.

All you have to do is play one game on our website - it can be as low as 0.00001 BTC. The amount of bets you make doesn't matter, and neither does the number that you rolled. What you need to do then is paste the bet ID of one of these bets as a reply to this thread.

The 3 winners will be chosen in 2 weeks using the following procedure:

We have chosen a random 12 digit hex ID in advance. The SHA256 hash of that string (plus extra padding to avoid brute forcing) is
Code:
f93e0d55b98e61dddfa4d3aae8204cfa727c909af15ef81ccdda9ac8313ceca4

The ID will be revealed in 2 weeks - the 21st of May.

The 3 winners are those with a bet ID which has the smallest modular distance to our random ID.

The modular distance is defined as
min((a - b) mod 248, (b - a) mod 248)
where a, b are 48bit integer representations of the hex IDs

Prize pool:
Winner: 3 BTC
2nd and 3rd: 1 BTC each

Winners will be asked to prove that they actually played the game by either signing a message from one of the originating addresses or performing an action on the website while logged in.

Why the modular distance? Why wouldn't a regular subtraction do?
If we used the absolute value of (a - b) instead then bets wouldn't have a uniform distribution of probability.

It's over!

The ID was e889acf0504e

The hashed message was
Code:
e889acf0504e_randompadding#gJ7n39u5

Script that was used

Winners:
Pokerfan: 3 BTC
danieldaniel: 1 BTC
kuriboh: 1 BTC

9  Economy / Service Announcements / Bitfetch - Anonymous Remote Torrent Downloading on: January 30, 2013, 08:50:47 PM
Bitfetch is a new torrent download service designed to make downloading torrents from your browser a breeze.

Many ISPs have adopted the practice of violating net neutrality and heavily throttling BitTorrent traffic along with every other protocol they deem inappropriate. There have also been many incidents lately in which ISPs have shown a blatant disregard for the privacy of their end users by inspecting their traffic or giving out their information to 3rd parties without due process. There is a way around this.

How it works:
  • Add a torrent URL, magnet URI or otherwise upload a torrent file. You can also type something in and search for it.
  • When your torrent is added its cost will appear on the right side. Click on Deposit and send a Bitcoin payment to the address listed.
  • Once it is done downloading you will be provided with a fast direct HTTPS link to the file(s).

Anonymous
Payments are only accepted in Bitcoin. We do not log IPs or any other data that may be used to identify you. There is no account to register - you are identified by a randomly generated unique token which you can use to access your balance.

All connections to Bitfetch - including downloads - are encrypted by default. Torrents can either be deleted manually by you or automatically after 48 hours (torrents over 10GB in size are deleted after 10 days).

Automatic zipping
You can choose to have torrents zipped so there is only a single file to download.

File selection
Need to download a small file out of a big collection? No problem!

Cost is 0.001 BTC per GB.

-

Some additional info:

Connectivity & upload
The server is on a gigabit connection so your torrent will be downloaded at the highest possible speed. Each torrent has a 8 MB/s upload allowance with 20 upload slots. Slow or stalled torrents are the result of low or nonexistent amount of seeds.

Slow downloads from the US
This applies to browser downloads only. As a cost-cutting measure some US ISPs (Comcast, Verizon) will limit the throughput of transatlantic TCP connections. To get around this you can use a multithreaded download manager such as DownThemAll.

Ratio
Ratio is not guaranteed to be 1, in some cases it will be much higher or lower. It all depends on the amount of leechers on the network. Average ratio of all torrents ever downloaded is currently 1.618 (BT total bytes out / BT total bytes in). I am open to suggestions on how to handle ratio for people that use private trackers.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / We shouldn't be recommending the Satoshi client to new users on: December 16, 2012, 04:36:16 PM
Why? It's so inefficient and provides a poor user experience.

Power users and developers will understand the need for it to download the entire 3.5GB+ blockchain, however the average Joe will not.

I understand that the 0.8 ultraprune client will reduce first run time to 30 minutes, however that is not enough. Until the official client is snappy enough and has a sleek & sexy interface (think Electrum on MacOS), I will be recommending Electrum/Armory or web wallets like BlockChain/Coinbase to people who ask me about Bitcoin.
