1  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / 60 GH/s Profitability on: September 20, 2013, 02:49:08 PM
So BFL is finally sending me my 60 GH/s miner and I am trying to calculate profitability to determine if I should sell it or if I should mine with it. I am using: http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/

With the default settings, except wattage I bumped up to 400 Watts, Hash rate to 60 GH/s, cost of hardware to 1,500 and time frame to 12 months. I am getting a profit of just under 8k in the first year, but I must be missing something. The deal seems to be too good. Can someone tell me what I am missing?

Bitcoin difficulty: 112,628,549
Bitcoins per Block (BTC/block): 25.00
Conversion rate (USD/BTC): 130.16

Power consumption (W): 450.00 (computer on some sort of inactive mode, while miner at 300+? dunno if this is accurate)
Time frame (months): 12
Cost of mining hardware (USD): 1500.00
Profitability decline per year: 0.61

2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Best/Most Creative Cold Storage Method on: March 22, 2013, 05:09:33 PM
I just read an article that featured Charlie Shrem's ring and Casascius Coins as methods of cold storage:

http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2013/03/bitcoin-ring/

So I was wondering what other creative methods of cold storage people are using, or they imagine using and haven't gotten around to yet.

I am thinking of setting up a cold "savings account" for some of my coins and was looking for an interesting way to do it. Especially that would allow me to know what the address is, but most everyone else who saw the same thing wouldn't be able to tell. Hopefully there will be several good ideas here that I can mix and match into a pretty awesome result.  Grin
3  Economy / Scam Accusations / Unconfirmed Scammer on: March 04, 2013, 04:48:06 PM

I'm looking to see if anyone has information as to who this person might be, they defaulted on BTCJam for a loan. In the defaulting loan, they claimed their name was Stefanie Heinze. I would appreciate any information that would allow me to get a hold of them, or give them a scammer tag or something. Most likely nothing will happen, but thought I would try. https://btcjam.com/users/1061

They used the name heinz, which I am not sure if it is presumptuous to assume it matches heinz  on these forums? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=23869

I don't want them to get a scammer tag without something a little more. Unless someone can back it up and associate the two heinz accounts, or has done business with heinz and can associate that name with the name Stefanie Heinze. Or maybe if there is a way to figure out which people with the name Stefanie Heinze like bitcoin or the BTCJam app on facebook. If there is any way to link this evidence, then I will request a scammer tag.

Let me know if you can help me with anything along these lines.

Thanks

5  Other / Politics & Society / Added Gun Control Irrelevant on: January 17, 2013, 01:36:13 PM
So first of all, Obama didn't announce anything. He came up with a list of things he would like to do with guns. Half of them he could have done anyway without a large, showy press conference (for instance writing a few letters). The rest of the things he is waiting on Congress to approve. Most likely, the House will not approve them, which then can turn into a 2014 political ploy in which Republicans didn't pass the "No Longer Shoot Children in the Head Act" or something to that nature.

Besides this hysteria, I would like to point out that gun control is quickly becoming obsolete as an idea to begin with:
http://defensedistributed.com/

When the average person can load up their 3D printer with plastic, download a CAD drawing for free off of the internet, and print a gun with minimal assembly, it puts the means of production into the average person. The government wants to outlaw high-capacity mags? Looks like I can print one in my home with no registration that plugs right into my gun. In the very near future, the idea of gun control will be laughable.

Not only that, but it shouldn't be long before a 3D printer may be able to print a new 3D printer. In this situation, even outlawing 3D printers will not prevent the people from gaining the means of production and being able to download designs from the internet for free or for BTC.

People will always find ways around these rules.
6  Economy / Scam Accusations / Can Someone "Work Off" a Scammer Tag on: January 14, 2013, 08:47:18 PM
This is more for curiosity purposes than anything. Say someone gets a loan and then gambles it on SatoshiDice or something, loses the money and can't pay back. They probably get a scammer tag. The question is "Is that permanent?" I mean obviously they can create a new account and rep and start from the beginning. However, does the scammer tag last for an amount of time? Proportional to number or amount of coins scammed? If they work and repay the loan with added interest late and the lender says they made up for it does it get removed? Let me know if there's any policy in this area or maybe just post a forum link to where I have overlooked the information.
