The Bitcoin market is booming.
The internet's favorite virtual currency is up over 230 percent since the beginning of the year and up 40 percent from Monday to Wednesday alone.
The latest leg up may be because it looks like the market may finally be going mainstream – now, U.S. banks are getting involved.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / The Promo Bay and Bitcoin on: February 15, 2013, 05:17:41 PM
For those unfamiliar, The Promo Bay is a program where The Pirate Bay promotes independent artists by putting their logos and links to their websites on The Pirate Bay home page for the weekend. The artists' works are distributed as torrents for free but they typically direct users to their website where they provide donation options.

TorrentFreak has an article up today about how this weekend's Promo Bay Artists (game developers) found themselves in this fortunate position: http://torrentfreak.com/pirated-indie-game-devs-get-full-pirate-bay-support-to-crack-steam-120215/

These game devs just learned about bitcoin today and added a donation address to their website:

It would be great if The Promo Bay also promoted artist compensation via Bitcoin. If you agree, you can send The Pirate Bay the suggestion here: http://thepiratebay.se/contact

On Silk Road, payments are made through Bitcoin, the electronic payment system that leaves no traces. The site automatically generates a virtual currency through a series of computers networked together. All you need to buy some of this currency is a credit card. You register your Bitcoin account with the site and then you are ready to purchase what you want, in total anonymity.

6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Exploit Reported on Craigslist: "Double your bitcoins today!" on: January 04, 2013, 04:18:12 AM
This was posted on 12/28/2012:

For those of you that are aware of the digital currency Bitcoin: There has been discovered an exploit that utilizes a series of computers on an "isolated from the internet" back-network that participates in intercepting the data stream where the bitcoins are circulated/stored. The backnet of PC's run a series of algorithms that have the net effect of doubling the bitcoin amount sent to certain addresses. This happens for BOTH receiver and sender to certain bitcoin rcv address programed into the algorythm.

In other words you can double your bitcoins sent total in about 10-30 minutes (the time it takes the algorithm to run and the backnet pc's to sync with the internet bitcoin datastream and finally your PC to also sync with the datastream (bitcoin calls it catchup) after which your amount sent should be returned two fold.

The algorithm will only work with WHOLE numbers at this point in time. So the minimum amount you can double is: 1 bitcoin (not .1 or .01) You can send 1 or 10 or 32 but NOT 1.23 or 10.50!! So ONLY whole amounts -- no cents.

This is working as of Jan 09 2012 and if you wish to double you can simply send any whole amount to bitcoin address:

--> 1NNwtZzLPYWJkabqcenLsqtFFz8BgDmmwe <--

So 1 bitcoin = you get 2 back. 10=20, 23=46, 120=240, ect..
You can use as many times as you wish for any whole amount. If you do not see your bitcoins comeback after about 45 min, make sure you are running bitcoin 0.5.1 beta and if not, get the latest version, install and let it sync. You should see your coins doubled!

Any takers?  Roll Eyes
7  Economy / Service Announcements / [ANN] SwarmStream.org - Privacy-focused Torrent Service on: December 26, 2012, 04:40:38 PM
Hi all,

I initially announced my service in the Newbies subforum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=132972.0), but now that I've been cleared, I'm starting the discussion here.

I've been working hard on a service that leverages the features of Bitcoin to provide private access to torrent swarms. If you grab a link to a magnet or torrent file from your favorite tracker, you can drop it into the form on http://swarmstream.org, and my server will fetch the torrent and present you with its files. If there are multiple files within the torrent, you will have the option to download all of them as a zip, and you can stream video and music using a media player like VLC directly from the server. Please be aware that the files will be removed from the server 24 hours after the torrent is downloaded. The cost is 0.03 BTC/GB, with a minimum cost of 0.01 BTC.

Some benefits of http://swarmstream.org are:
  • No signup: With Bitcoin, accounts are unnecessary, so I don't collect any personal info, including IP addresses.
  • Speed: my servers are likely significantly faster than your local client/connection.
  • Reliability: you can still use your internet connection while using my service! As you probably know, torrents degrade your connection to the point where your internets are pretty unusable.
  • Space: if you stream your content, you don't have to store files on your computer.
  • Privacy: your IP address won't be found in a torrent swarm.

Protips:
  • Stream quality is heavily dependent upon your connection speed. If your connection isn't the greatest, please stick to smaller media files.
  • Healthier (well-seeded) torrents will provide a much better experience.

I have more features in the works, so please stay tuned! And if you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

Here is the feedback I received in the newbies thread:

So I took a gamble and gave it a shot. It was super easy and crazy fast. Great work; you just found yourself a daily user. Smiley

Im testing this now, looks cool.

EDIT:
It works! Pretty nice too.
The site is super simple and I'm amazed of how easy it is to use it, kudos to the dev!
