41  Economy / Gambling discussion / Gambling sites gone at bitcoin.it. We need a good alternative. on: May 25, 2011, 04:31:20 AM
Whole categories of sites keeps disappearing from the site all the time. Sometimes it comes back sometimes not. Wouldn't it be good to have another wiki some other place that has more lax restrictions. Then have the bitcoin.it site at least link to it so people can at least find their porn, gambling, and other stuff!  Grin Some of this "adult" stuff is going to help drive Bitcoin! Perhaps even a tor/onion site?
42  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Sending to unused/unkown addresses on: May 10, 2011, 01:41:24 AM
I'm just trying to figure out something...

I'm wondering what would happen:
-I create a new address without being online
-the address doesn't exist on the network yet

Could someone sent to it?
And if they can sent to it, could another person who knew what that address was, alter their client to manually create that address, connect to the internet, and claim it as theirs?

IF that is all possible would connecting to the network but not send/receive prevent this? Or is the address really up for grabs until the first coin is sent?
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Weird feeling- I keep spending BTC while watching balance converted 2 USD go up! on: May 09, 2011, 02:13:17 AM
I use mybitcoin sometimes and it's always weird seeing my USD equivalent for my account go up even though I'm spending the BTC! I understand why, it's just kind of cool to see.
Even for my lottery, if the number of players go down a bit the value in USD will be higher. (21 BTC so far and it's already 77 USD)

I think I like BTC!  Cool
44  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What's the largest transaction fee you were asked to pay? on: May 08, 2011, 09:41:17 PM
Ya, I know you don't have to if you don't want to, but I'm wondering for when the default client sets the fees.
I just sent 128 BTC only to find out the fee was 0.23. Yikes! Pretty much lost my whole take.  Cry
I guess it's not toooo bad as it had a whole bunch of 1 BTC coins together in a group.

What's the biggest you have paid in fees for one transaction?
45  Economy / Marketplace / Congratulations to the owner of "19JWKd..."! Winner of 128 BTC on BitLotto on: May 05, 2011, 03:43:20 AM
The winning picks were: 46,9,26,39,8,47 ---> d,9,0,7,8,e
The winner's transaction hash: d9283e...
Ticket payment date: April 25 06:07:09 UTC.

Still not sure if that's you? Don't worry! Payment will show up in your account automatically.
If you (winner) can, telling others of your win, online in the Bitcoin forum or on your blog, will help the next jackpot be even bigger! Perhaps you'll win it again!

Anyways, congrats to whoever the winner is and good luck to all those playing in the June 1 draw!!!  Grin

46  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Should drugs be listed at bitcoin.it? on: April 27, 2011, 01:30:02 AM
I keep seeing the wiki battle it out but wanted to see a quick survey of the community.
47  Bitcoin / Project Development / Getting local stores to use Bitcoin on: April 24, 2011, 11:59:30 PM
For Bitcoin to go mainstream we need to be able to buy stuff with it in our local city. Stores need to start popping up that take Bitcoins as payment. I think there is a demand for it but no supply. Chicken-egg-problem. I think part of the solution is making stores aware that there is people in their city that are looking to buy things with Bitcoins.

To demonstrate this demand perhaps a website should be made. Perhaps - buyerswithbitcoins.com or something

This website
-allows people to create accounts with their location(s) filled in along with email address
-the user then creates a bunch of tags of what they want to spend Bitcoins on the most
-the website then creates a map of all the cities along with how many people live there and what they want to spend Bitcoins on (no names just total number, and tag frequency)
-if MANY fill it out it will motivate some shops to try it
-if a store does want to try it, they tell the website who then emails all the people in that city
-store performs the experiment with success as all the people are advised they are trying it
-store tells media of success
-Bitcoin takes over the world!

Some of the early adopters could be:
-coffee shops
-internet cafes
-tech/comp stores

Good idea?

48  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin security - "big room" analogy on: April 24, 2011, 12:44:16 AM
...begin shameless self promotion... Cool

http://bitcoinweekly.com/articles/how-bitcoin-security-works-by-analogy

I've haven't written anything of substance in a really long time.

I was trying to explain Bitcoin security to someone and was having a very hard time. All I got back was a blank stare. I hope this analogy 'kind of' explains what's happening behind the scenes...
49  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Idea for the Bitcoin killer app on: April 19, 2011, 01:01:11 PM
This is just a quick little post describing what *I* think will bring Bitcoin mainstream. I wish I had the programming skills to do it myself. (But of course if anyone else uses the idea and gets filthy rich, a thank you present to me would be very appreciated!  Wink )

Problems (or issues I guess) with Bitcoin client as is:
-user can't really do anything until entire block chain is downloaded -depending on the device used, this large amount data/bandwidth could be troublesome
-everything is done with a wallet - this means the device it's on can get stolen, lost, broken
-sure the user could make backups and encrypt it but I'd say most people will not do this

In some ways the killer app (perhaps EasyBitcoin) would be like mybitcoin.com but with one main difference. Each user would still have their OWN wallet.

EasyBitcoin would run a server that maintains a connection to the bitcoin network and keeps a copy of the block chain. Each user would be able to visit EasyBitcoin, register, and create an account. This will create a location on the server for storing the users wallet.

Then the user grabs the GUI for interacting with EasyBitcoin for Win/Linux/Mac/iPhone/Android etc. These GUI's are simple in that their whole function is securely communicating with EasyBitcoin and making their OWN encrypted local wallet. The block chain is used on the server side of things. Every time the software is loaded a username and password is requested to unlock wallet and get access to server. (Perhaps it locks after a certain amount of time of not being used) This will allow it to talk to EasyBitcoin using encryption. If no wallet exists on the users computer OR the server a new one is made by the GUI. Every so often an encrypted back up is sent to the server. That way if the user loses his computer they don't lose their wallet. If the user wants to change and use other software they can visit EasyBitcoin and select to download the wallet.

The GUI and the server then communicate to keep the transactions in sync. When the GUI is loaded the addresses listed in the wallet are passed along to the server and the server returns all the transactions that should show up in the GUI. I guess kind of like moving the bitcoind and running it on the server and securely communicating over the internet instead. It would be cool if only the GUI had access to the private keys and EasyBitcoin didn't need to see the whole wallet. Only an encrypted copy existing on the server.

This would allow a very lightweight bitcoin client that can run with minimal resources. Wallets would be safer and less likely lost/stolen and the user would have something that works right away. They would also be able to move on to other services as their wallet is kept separate.

To make money I guess the service could charge something like .01 per transaction over 10 or something....

....something like that...

50  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Should an EWallet be called something else? If so, what? on: April 19, 2011, 12:10:53 PM
Found the discussion pop up: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Talk:EWallet and figured here would be a great place to discuss it.

Myself, I like Group Wallet. Browser-based kind of limits what it's actually about. It could potentially be used outside of a browser setting. I do agree though that EWallet doesn't really describe what it is.
51  Economy / Marketplace / BitLotto - and obtaining random numbers from within the Bitcoin network on: April 09, 2011, 05:14:59 AM
Currently BitLotto uses a Canadian Lottery 6/49 lottery to get 6 numbers that are used to find a winner. Ideally it would be nice to get these numbers from Bitcoin instead. The first draw would not change with such short notice but with proper discussion BitLotto would be open to using an alternate source of random numbers. Using Bitcoin would be perfect if possible. The criteria would be either six numbers 1-49 (each number only drawn once) or six numbers 1-16 but each number can occur 3 times max...  that would match the current system pretty close. Any ideas? Problems using these numbers? How random? It has to be something that can't be predicted or manipulated. (Of course I'd change it for a draw where no one has entered yet and if a few have the option to get their money back. Just wanted to see what some of you more technical people had to say? Thanks. Perhaps somehow setting a certain date, then whatever block comes next and somehow getting random numbers from it....
52  Economy / Marketplace / Official launch of *BitLotto* at bitlotto.com on: April 06, 2011, 05:17:12 AM
As mentioned before in the forum stating my plans, my website should now be up at bitlotto.com. I'm hoping for the first month someone will win at least 40 BTC and grow from there. It just takes a small risk of 1 BTC. Check out the website for all the details.

Thank you, theymos (Details at website. He has 40 BTC for the winner if BitLotto doesn't pay) for providing a person I can use to help build trust with this community with my lottery showing that I have no intention of faking it all and not giving the winnings and to wobber for designing the logo! (check your account Wink )

I hope over the years I can provide some fun for you all and make some of you rich! Good luck!
53  Economy / Marketplace / Make a simple logo for BitLotto - make 10 BTC plus some more... on: April 02, 2011, 03:45:40 AM
I don't have many BTC at the moment and I'm in the process of setting up what's called BitLotto. I don't have a permanent site set up yet but the temp one with at least the information of what it is can be found at bitlotto.webnode.com (a few have already entered for the first draw the first wed of May)

Since I have almost NO artistic ability I was seeing if anyone was interested in giving it a shot. I want something really simple looking and basic. Kind of like a lot of the new "web 2.0" sites.

I'd pay 10 BTC to the person who makes the logo I pick PLUS they can pick ONE draw of any month of their choosing where I will give them the 1% that I would normally keep. So they could pick July draw coming up or perhaps June next year. I'll let the person pick. (Picking a draw right away would probably amount to maybe .5 BTC. LOL. Maybe in the future that amount will be 10 BTC. Just make sure to help spread the word about the lottery and your take will be bigger  Grin)

Requirements:
-hopefully the "B" kind of looks like a BTC symbol
-simple looking and not too complicated
-prefer no color transitions or too many colors -and in greyscale is still readable
-prefer SVG format with a png example -great site to quickly upload example: imgur.com
-rights to image go to BitLotto
-if no entries satisfy my requirements I reserve the right to not pick a logo - I really hope to pick one though as it would make my life easier!

Just reply with your entries and I'll pick one I like!
