1  Other / Beginners & Help / Why 6 confirmations? on: April 20, 2013, 04:44:55 PM
All of the exchanges have this common standard that 6 confirmations need to pass before it accepts your Bitcoins.

I'd assume that if someone is trying to double spend, one confirmation would be enough, and if someone is trying to get 51% of the market, the number of confirmations don't matter.

Why isn't one confirmation enough?
2  Economy / Service Discussion / Whatever happened with Bitcoin Wireless? on: April 06, 2013, 07:34:22 PM
I remember they opened up Beta testing, and it was working for most people!

Anybody know what happened?
My phone period is running out tomorrow, and I wish I can pay directly with Bitcoin..

Does anybody know if they have an ETA for at least opening the beta again?
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Javascript currency conversion tool for Bitcoin merchants on: February 17, 2013, 09:50:56 PM
Hello everyone,

I recently added BitPay as a payment option to my website.
However I didn't have the ability to easily convert all of my USD prices to Bitcoin automatically.

As a result, I've now built a multiple currency, auto detecting, library which allows you to easily convert your prices to Bitcoin to display to the user quickly.
You can check it out here:

4  Other / Beginners & Help / Answer a simple question - Get 0.01 BTC on: February 09, 2013, 07:13:16 PM
I am a behavioural economics hobbyist doing a few experiments. I need to collect some data.

Here is how (Please read everything before starting):

1. Go to http://www.veniaminilmer.com/timerationality/test
2. Answer the simple question there.
3. When you click submit it gives you a message 'Here is your code:' copy that code.
4. Paste that code and your wallet address here.
5. I will send over 0.01 BTC.

Note that everyone who posts a valid code here will only be counted once per day.

6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Multibit - Sending multiple transactions in one block? on: February 03, 2013, 05:18:03 PM
I need to send money to many different wallets.
Instead of sending it once at a time, I'm trying to send all of the transactions within one block.
I use Multibit.
Does anyone know how to make Multibit consolidate multiple transactions into one block?

Thank you,
Veniamin
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Anything available like BitPay for Litecoin? on: February 03, 2013, 11:47:43 AM
I own BestChineseMedicines.com

Recently I was interested in how quickly I can integrate Bitcoin with my site.

After I was done with the integration, I wrote up a review here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/17r90n/my_review_of_bitpay/

Now I am interested, is there an easy integration I can use for Litecoin?
If so let me know, and I will add it to my site.

Most important things required:
1. I don't have to manage multiple wallets. A new wallet should be provided per transaction, but should later be all pooled into one wallet for me to pick up.
2. I receive an API notification per transaction to integrate with all my other API callbacks.
8  Economy / Service Discussion / My review of BitPay on: February 02, 2013, 04:02:49 PM
I run the website BestChineseMedicines.com.

I have been reading a lot about Bitcoin, and have been debating whether or not to add it to my site.

I come from a very technical background. I work as a computer consultant for large firms in New York.
Creating multiple addresses for each transaction is not the easiest thing in the world for more people.
I'd be able to do it, but I just have no time.

Judging from my perspective I wanted to see how easy would it be to use BitPay.
BitPay is supposed to allow you to accept Bitcoins "easily".. So I wanted to see how quick I can implement it on my site.

Now that I've implemented it on my site, I've got a list of pros and cons for using BitPay.

Pros:
* It is very easy for non-technical people to start accepting payment using Bitcoins. Even if if they don't understand what Bitcoins are exactly.
The actual time spend on integrating with BitPay was about 30 minutes, and most of it had to do with rewriting our code, not using the BitPay library.
* BitPay seems to take into account security with Bitcoin. They have a timer for how long each transaction can take.
* It looks professional. They have a nice "Click to pay" button which is compatible with most bitcoin clients.
* Very configurable. You can set the callback location, where to route users after paying, the order ID they would be receiving. All this can be set PER INVOICE.. I wish Paypal had such functionality.
* The callback functionality is VERY simple.. the keys match the input you provided. This is VERY different from Paypal, and Google Checkout especially.

Cons:
* BitPay doesn't entirely show the 'Bitcoin' is actually a different currency. They show their service as an alternative form of payment.
As a result, they did not yet provide any function that will convert your dollars into bitcoins on your site. (Not even some cheap javascript version.)
For true Bitcoin users, if the products are not expressed in Bitcoins, it removes confidence that the site actually accepts Bitcoins. You need some kind of sign or something. Which brings me to the next point:
* BitPay doesn't have an obvious  "We accept Bitcoins" sign to add to your page.
* Refunds are not automated. Every time you want to send a refund, you need to send an email to their support address.
9  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / PHP API to convert USD to BTC? on: February 01, 2013, 09:45:57 PM
Hello,

I am the owner of http://www.bestchinesemedicines.com/
I would like to offer all of the products in bitcoins.

Does anybody know of a simple reliable API I could use that can give me the current USD to Bitcoin conversion?

Look at this transaction:

Exactly how much money is coming from 1MPcX3ZmnkS6V9oqgv4bbt7bVPcHgYzvf3 and how much money is coming from 1LhEYFASYvauxCBvufzBwMyWgP4oThjNMQ?

Exactly how much money is going to 1CenyQGJDFdur6AzJ7BJv48F6Tmct6RQqU and how much money is going to 1LhEYFASYvauxCBvufzBwMyWgP4oThjNMQ?

How is it possible in this transaction that someone sends money to themselves?
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Resending bitcoins on: January 14, 2013, 06:11:05 PM
Hello,

The following never happened to me, but I can just imagine the case, so I wanted to ask you:

Imagine, in the future, sending some bitcoins without a transaction fee.

No miner picks it up because it doesn't have a transaction fee.

On a Multibit, is there a way to cancel the transaction and resend it with a transaction fee?

Thank you,
Ven
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Help me do research - You can win 0.5 BTC on: January 12, 2013, 05:56:05 PM
I am a behavioural economics hobbyist doing a few experiments. I need to collect some data.

I was doing something similar earlier, but this time the rules are different:

You could win 0.5 BTC.

Here is how (Please read everything before starting):

1. Go to http://www.veniaminilmer.com/timerationality/test
2. Answer the simple question there.
3. When you click submit it gives you a message 'Here is your code:' copy that code.
4. Paste that code and your wallet address here.
5. Tomorrow Sunday January 13th, 1 PM EST / 6 PM GMT (24 hours from now), one code will be randomly selected out of everyone's given code, and the winner will get 0.5 BTC.

Note that everyone who posts a valid code here will only be counted once. If you post more than one code, you will still only be counted once.

Have fun!
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Get 0.0001 BTC for answering a simple question on: January 12, 2013, 01:41:05 PM
I am a behavioural economics hobbyist doing a few experiments. I need to collect some data.

I will pay you 0.0001 BTC.

Here is how (Please read everything before starting):

1. Go to http://www.veniaminilmer.com/timerationality/test
2. Answer the simple question there.
3. When you click submit it gives you a message 'Here is your code to get 0.0001 BTC:' copy that code.
4. Paste that code and your wallet address here.
5. The first 10 different people to post a valid code and wallet address here will each receive 0.0001 BTC.

Each person can submit up to 5 times and thus be paid a maximum of 0.0005 BTC.
If you submit more than 5 times I will only send 0.0005 BTC.
If you submit more than once please try to contain all codes in one post. ..it'll make it easier for me to keep track.

I shall wait for 10 different people to submit a code.
I will make a post here noting that the sending has been completed.

Once 10 people have posted, I will modify the site to not give a code any more.

Have fun!
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Where to post the following? on: January 12, 2013, 01:13:20 PM
I don't want to create spam so I thought to ask before posting.

I am a behavioural economics hobbyist doing a few experiments.
I would like to give out 0.0001 BTC to the first 10 people who answer my question.
In which category of this forum should I post this message?

Thank you,
Veniamin
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Making Bitcoin usable in needy places on: January 11, 2013, 03:47:04 PM
I heard someone previously note that the way to get Bitcoin into low income countries was for them to use it on their phones.
The idea was that people from low income countries more can more likely afford a phone rather than a computer.

Here is a graph of Cellphone model use:
http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vendor-ww-monthly-201112-201212

Nokia is at the top.
Going in more specifically to low income countries:

Iran - http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vendor-IR-monthly-201112-201212
Kenya - http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vendor-KE-monthly-201112-201212
Nigeria - http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vendor-NG-monthly-201112-201212
Ethiopia - http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vendor-ET-monthly-201112-201212

They are all using Nokia.

Unfortunately, no one wrote up an app for Nokia:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mobile_Payment_Apps

I think an app for Nokia would be a first good step to get low income countries.

17  Economy / Services / Looking to rent a room in New York. I can pay in Bitcoin. on: January 07, 2013, 01:56:40 AM
Hello,

I am 24 professional working in the financial center as a computer engineer consultant.
I enjoy playing ping pong, rock climbing, skiing, hiking, just hanging out.
I've got geeky friends who are getting PhDs in physics.

Two requirements:
* A large room.
* Needs to be close to the train.

I don't care which floor it's on, as long as it's not around the roof.

Let me know if you have any information about such a place.
18  Other / Beginners & Help / No transactions, Mining on: January 06, 2013, 11:51:25 PM
From what I understand miners are supposed to be validating transactions with their work.

If, for one brief holiday, there are no transactions, what do the miners do? Are their CPU cycles wasted since there are no transactions to be done?
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Mining blocks - subsidies on: January 04, 2013, 02:53:20 AM
Where do the subsidies come from?
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Please help me understand mining. on: January 04, 2013, 01:12:13 AM
1. From what I understand, bitcoin miners find a hash code. For each hash code they find they are rewarded 50 BTC. (Now it's 25 BTC and it will continue to decrease at an exact rate.) How exactly are these newly found hash codes converted to bitcoins?

2. In the weusecoins bitcoin video, it was said that 'every transaction is verified by a miner.' I'm not sure of that was an analagy. From what I understand, miners just find hashes. I thought everyone in the network verfies the transaction, not just miners. Is this correct?
