Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto recently met with Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong to explore the company’s potential entry into the Philippines.
Coinbase, one of the leading cryptocurrency companies in the United States, initiated the meeting to convey its strong interest in expanding its footprint to the Philippines. It recognized the country’s growing digital economy and the increasing adoption of blockchain technology. Secretary Recto welcomed Coinbase's interest, emphasizing the Philippine government’s commitment to fostering innovation in the financial sector. He expressed the government’s willingness to provide a robust regulatory framework that supports cryptocurrency adoption while safeguarding consumer protection and financial stability.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from January 20 to 24, 2025. Secretary Recto was named as Special Envoy of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., and Head of the Philippine delegation to WEF to secure more investments that will drive inclusive economic growth in the Philippines.

1. Spoofing Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL—often just by changing one letter, symbol, or number—to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source.
2. Phishing Phishing schemes often use spoofing techniques to lure you in and get you to take the bait. These scams are designed to trick you into giving information to criminals that they shouldn’t have access to.
3. Smishing scams happen through SMS (text) messages.

[ Infrawatch noted the following concerns: - Both platforms allegedly allow peer-to-peer (P2P) crypto transactions, which Infrawatch PH claims violate Philippine financial laws.
- P2P transactions without oversight create opportunities for money laundering and other illegal activities, the group added.
Deceptive Marketing Practices: Infrawatch said: - Bitget and OKX have engaged in aggressive marketing campaigns, including crypto giveaways and monetary rewards targeting Filipino users.
- They have also held promotional events at universities disguised as educational blockchain initiatives, according to Infrawatch PH.

1. Coins.ph - through desktop/website at mobile app 2. Gcrypto (Gcash) under PDAX - through mobile app only 3. PDAX - through desktop/website at mobile app 4. Maya formerly known PayMaya - through mobile app only 5. Moneybees - through online & over-the-counter 6. Partnered and under by PDAX din. Mukhang under development pa.

Yes, our country has banned the access to Binance and this was raised since last year of November by SEC. But after the deadline given for 3 months, they didn't banned it immediately but just a day or two ago they did pushed for the ban. Most of the ISPs that we've got have totally banned to doing a visit to Binance's website and there's this message when I've first tried accessing it yesterday that I might be reported to the authorities. But upon paying a visit today, it's just a total domain error. I guess that our government just want a chunk out of the fine they've made with the US SEC as our government tries to acquire as much taxes that they can for the funding of a newly proposed government investing program. The SEC Has Officially Banned Crypto Giant Binance in the PhilippinesWriting to the NTC, SEC chair Emilio B. Aquino said, “The SEC has identified the aforementioned platform and concluded that the public’s continued access to these websites/apps poses a threat to the security of the funds of investing Filipinos.” The SEC in early March had also requested for NTC’s help in blocking access to other unregistered investment platforms such as OctaFX and MiTrade. PS: The Binance app is still accessible for some locals.

JUST IN: #Bitcoin becomes the second largest ETF commodity in the US, surpassing silver.
