21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How Strong Is Your Wallet Password? Wallet Backup + How to Avoid Keyloggers! on: July 01, 2013, 08:46:07 AM
https://howsecureismypassword.net/
https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx

If you have more than a few BTC, anything less than "Best" is unacceptable - that should be your starting point.

Having a password of "larry123" is like leaving your wallet and banking info laying out in the street. Just. Dont. Do it!

Ideally use letters, numbers, and symbols in combination. Something like @@@@@applebeesmakesmevomit12345&&&&& is pretty secure and easy to remember: 5 symbols twice, 5 numbers once, and a phrase you wont forget. But you can do much better: using the maximum amount of variation in the characters and words that arent in the dictionary, upper AND lowercase, and avoiding sequences like 12345 make for even stronger passwords: *@%#!59771bLoRgBrAbBlEfLaPpEr87651*@%#! is virtually uncrackable. Again, all you have to remember here is one series of symbols, two sets of numbers, and one gibberish phrase in alternating upper and lowercase. Also consider using a password manager. Read more here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/passwords-create.aspx
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2008/06/the-ultimate-guide-for-creating-strong-passwords/

Also, always create multiple backups, usually 2-3 USB flash drives are fine for small amounts, but if you have a lot of BTC or LTC, you will usually want to use more than one wallet to spread it out over, and back up the keys for each wallet multiple times to multiple physical locations. I advise against using online wallets. Use extra hard drives, flash drives, your phone, your girlfriend's laptop, whatever. As long as your password is very secure, you wont ever need to worry. Just back that shit up. Because if the wallet is lost, having an uncrackable password cant help you.

If you do this, the chances of your bitcoins being lost or stolen is very low - just dont forget your password!

How to Avoid Keyloggers

The easiest way to avoid any type of keylogger is simple: type part of your passphrase into a blank document, and copy and paste it into your wallet. Then type some random gibberish into your open document. Then type another part of your password. Copy & paste. Repeat. Doing this 2 or more times makes it virtually impossible to have your password stolen via hardware or software.
22  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / LTC mining just got Brutal: ~$2/LTC and Diff = 700+ on: June 14, 2013, 07:28:12 AM
How can you compete with botnets that have virtually no expenses to run?

I want to support the security of the network, but its wont be long until Im mining with a negative expectation at this rate...

We cant stop the hash power, so lets try to get more merchants accepting LTC. This will help this price. We need real adoption.
23  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Cards Throttling Around 100c on: June 12, 2013, 11:15:31 PM
Ive noticed now that its really hot out, a lot of my LTC mining rigs running much hotter and some of the cards are hitting 100-103c and begin to thermal throttle. The effect is that the hashrate goes down, because if I add external cooling (extra fans etc) the hashrate goes back up to around normal when the cards are at 80-90c.

So basically I need a lot of external fans to keep my cards at a high hashrate, but Im wondering how much of the heat is related to scrypt rather than SHA256 mining, and what you experiences are with thermal throttling, GPU fan death and heat related component failure, and overall the best way to run rigs in the heat.

Right now I have a 80mm case fan on one of my GPUs that had its fan die, its works OK but still not as good at the OEM fan + shell which seems odd.
24  Bitcoin / Hardware / ***IMPORTANT: USE SAFE WIRING FOR MINING RIGS!*** on: May 31, 2013, 09:32:18 AM
So, like a lot of folks I have a decent rig which is pushing the boundaries of heat and power consumption at my place. Bunch of different machines, power strips, extension cables - the same as many of you Im sure. Well I had a major scare tonight as I heard a loud "popping" from my mining area, I went over to investigate, and one of the cheaper, thinner gauge IEC power cables for one of my 800w PSUs was in the process of melting and shorting out!

Holy crap. That smell of burning electric wires is one of the scariest things in the world and I nearly avoided being in the 3rd (!) electrical fire of my life (the other two were faulty wiring inside the walls and not at all my fault). Had I not been home I dont even like to think about what might have happened.

So PLEASE people be careful, use good quality, THICK gauge cables for everything and DONT overload power strips or circuits. Dont run super long extension cables at full load at all if possible. If you are constantly tripping a power strip or circuit breaker, DIAL IT BACK. If a cable feels HOT to the touch, it will fail eventually and could cause major loss of property or worse. Be SAFE people, mining is fun but its not worth risking everything for!
25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Damn Son! Our Litecoins Got Jacked! on: May 29, 2013, 12:10:27 PM
https://forum.litecoin.net/index.php/topic,4002.0.html

" The recent rumors of supposed problems on the Litecoin network we believe were actually multiple clever attacks on pool servers, there was no instability in the Litecoin network itself.  Thanks to help from the Litecoin core devs, especially pooler of litecoinpool.org, we have found and fixed a share verification vulnerability in the pool server stratum implementation."

26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Next LTC Difficulty Jump :-( on: May 07, 2013, 10:36:04 PM
Looks like back to around 550-600+ (35%+ jump) and the price has been stuck in the mud around $3 this week.  Sad  Not that Im selling.

My 5000 kh/s is only going to be generating around $600 profit a month (~8 LTC/day), but Im a big believer in BTC/LTC long term so I will stick with it.

The good news is, when it jumps a lot of people may quit mining LTC and go for other alt coins, but still, this next jump is going to be brutal.

I guess it gives us a while to mine some cheap coins before they get listed on Gox, at which point the price - and difficulty - will just go insane.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Im fairly confident the NSA (US Gov) Can 51% Any Coin At Any Time on: May 04, 2013, 12:42:01 AM
LINK TO WIRED ARTICLE: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/03/ff_nsadatacenter/all/

Im dont have a degree in computer science and couldnt do any calculations even if we had real numbers about just how powerful the NSA's combined hashing power is, but given the scale and rate of development of massively parallel computing power the NSA has developed for code breaking, and given that they employ thousands of the smartest and best programmers and cryptographers in the world, and given that they have an unlimited budget, its seems obvious to me that the US Gov could have the NSA 51% attack any coin at any time. They have machines which make your Avalon look like a Casio watch from 1980.

Sorry for the downer, and hey at least Bitcoins have bounced back a little today. But to me this seems to be by far the biggest threat to Bitcoin and all the altcoins. Sorry if this has been posted or discussed here before, I did a quick search but didnt find much.

"the agency has not finished building at Oak Ridge, nor is it satisfied with breaking the petaflop barrier. Its next goal is to reach exaflop speed, one quintillion (1018) operations a second, and eventually zettaflop (1021) and yottaflop."
28  Economy / Speculation / When is it not a bubble? on: March 28, 2013, 12:25:19 AM
And when is it just the beginning of a new paradigm for currency?

I was saying its a bubble when we were at $35. Now, I have no idea and Im a little bit scared.
29  Economy / Gambling / http://crypto-games.us .... Legit site? on: March 13, 2013, 02:50:36 PM
http://crypto-games.us/ltcdice.php

I sent them 10LTC on a whim getting 3-1, the result hasnt been recorded on their site and the LTC was never returned even after an email.

Im guessing either the site isnt legit or my transaction got borked in the fork?
30  Economy / Services / Looking for Litecoin Developer on: March 05, 2013, 01:10:55 PM
Im looking for a NYC based developer who can do the back end work integrating a payment system for Litecoin into existing gambling software. If you have experience developing for Bitcoin, Litecoin is almost identical. Please reply via PM with any references, experience, links to your work or a resume, and what your rates are.

33  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Recommend me a card $300 range on: March 02, 2013, 03:19:46 PM
I was planning on buying a 5970 used for gaming and some BTC (and soon LTC) mining, but are there better options?

My budget isnt big, around $300, if I can keep it under that all the better.

5970 looks like I can get in the $250-280 range. Id say $330 would be absolute max shipped I would spend on a card.

Recommendations?
34  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Sell me your used 5970 on: March 01, 2013, 06:23:26 PM
I need a new graphics card for gaming and some mining, so sell me your 5970  Grin Im looking to pay $250 plus shipping, I can do BTC or paypal or cash in NYC. PM me. Thanks
35  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How Long Before Litecoins Hit $.25c Each? on: March 01, 2013, 05:07:40 PM
Simple poll, I see LTC is slowly trending back upwards on https://btc-e.com/exchange, right now its around $.075 per LTC, but its highly volatile.

How long before it hits $.10cents (I assume very soon - maybe next week) and eventually $.25c? Furthermore, if you think $.25c is possible how many years do you think it will take to hit 1:1 parity with the $USD? That would be a monumental achievement.

I see LTC becoming a lot more successful as mainstream people finally begin to learn about BTC in 2013, and as BTC mining becomes unprofitable, many many GPU miners will switch to LTC and while some will hold them or trade them for BTC, some people like myself actually will begin USING them more for transactions and I predict we will see businesses begin adding the option to pay in either BTC or LTC for products and services.

But first we need some sort of equivalent of Coinbase for LTC - something a totally average person with an IQ of 100 can understand and use without downloading anything or going through any hoops - just using an email address. Right now the currency is too small and not circulated enough for private capital to back a major project like Coinbase, but I predict that in 2013-2014 we will see some major growth in the LTC sector built around a paypal-like LTC payment processor/ewallet that helps to explode LTC's popularity amidst BTC becoming totally mainstream.
36  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / BitcoinX Mining Profit Calculator on: February 25, 2013, 09:05:32 PM
Im trying to do some calculations, but I dont see how I can account for the total network hashrate here? I can crank the difficulty up, but I dont think thats telling the whole story... or is it?

Also, the profitability decline per year doesnt seem to work, or am I using it wrong?

Can anyone help me out get some accurate numbers? I just want to see if even in a worst case scenario, I can break even on BFL machine in 1 year if bitcoins stay above $20 each.

Thanks
37  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Is there something like Coinbase for LTC? on: February 25, 2013, 08:39:22 PM
If not, whats the closest thing, if I want to buy LTC with a low fee and keep them in an online wallet? Thanks

39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Worth attempting to solomine LTC on CPU getting ~31kh/s? on: February 23, 2013, 06:05:18 PM
How often on average will I find a block and is it even worth attempting to solomine LTC on my CPU? (I know GPU is more efficient but Im using that to mine BTC)

Ive had problems trying to configure scryptminer to pool mine LTC, despite my best efforts. But I got it working for solo mining.

However, it send my CPU core temps up to around 85-90c, this seems a bit high to be running 24/7, although Im not sure how much this would actually shorten the CPU lifespan if at all.
40  Other / Off-topic / All your gamble are belong to chronic on: February 23, 2013, 01:56:17 PM
I currently own the Gold Bar (http://bitcoingoldbar.com/), The Gem (http://bitcoingem.com/#), and The Coin (http://www.btcgoldcoin.us/game/)!

I dont mess with creepy looking bears.  Wink

Just pure gambling with some btc I won playing poker on Seals With Clubs https://sealswithclubs.eu/aff.php?aff=186

Action is a little slow on there around 8-9am EST, and sometimes a man with a few beers in him needs his gambling fix ASAP!

Someone buy them back, Im down to battle!
