61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Best way to hedge against BTC value movements. Bitcoin futures / options? on: June 05, 2014, 05:30:21 PM
Let's say I want to have an "insurance" so that 1 or 2 days from now I'll be able to buy Bitcoins at today's price, paying a small premium for this insurance.

What is the best way to currently do so? I have been looking at several options on the market but I can't seem to find the solution yet:

- Icbit.se: unclear operation and as far as I can see, futures are for longer timespans (3-6 months away)
- 796.com: seems good with tight spreads but settlement is only once per week

Any other suggestions/strategies?

62  Economy / Goods / Stuff from Argentina on: March 31, 2014, 01:29:42 AM
I'm spending some time in Argentina and I'm willing to trade some local goods for BTC if anyone is interested. I think especially leather goods/crafts are a good deal compared to European/US prices. Other possibilities are:

- Yerba mate
- Beef (very cheap and good quality although here we would be talking some more serious business)
- Dulce de leche

PM me if you think we can do some business
63  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Use of Bitcoin for international B2B commerce (import/export)? on: March 16, 2014, 11:45:56 PM
Do you think BTC could be used for international B2B trade? Could it eventually replace the USD as the de facto currency for international transactions?

I can see several advantages for companies that adopt BTC for their import/export operations:

- lower transaction fees (no banks involved)
- letter of credit (high fees) could be implemented in a more economic way (through a trusted escrow service)
- the trade would be probably considered as barter (as BTC is not considered a currency but a commodity), thus possibly reducing taxes/import duties
- avoidance of currency manipulation by Government (in countries with parallel currency markets like Argentina or Venezuela)
- instant and provable transfer of money

Could it be implemented legally? What issues can you think about?

66  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Is it safe to use a PSU to power cards from 2 different rigs? on: January 29, 2014, 06:55:13 PM
Here is the situation:

I have 2 rigs with 3 7950s on each of them and 2 Corsair CX750 PSUs. The first rig is running perfectly with the first PSU (crashes sometimes but very seldom) but on the second one I can't run more than 2 cards at a time. If I plug in the 3rd one the system crashes after a few minutes of mining (and I can't turn it on again until I have turned off the PSU and waited for some time).

I'm thinking about getting a 3rd CX750 to power one card from each rig to take some work away from the other 2 PSUs, but I'm not sure if this can be done safely. My interpretation is that if I power the risers and the cards with the 3rd PSU (so they don't draw any energy from the other PSUs) there won't be any electrical connection between the two rigs. But of course I might be missing something. I'm using 30cm powered risers for all cards.
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / How/where to downgrade AMD Catalyst drivers? on: January 20, 2014, 07:17:01 PM
I can't get more than 4 GPUs detected under Windows 8 and for what I have been researching I have to downgrade to Catalyst 12.6 (have 13.12 now). However, I haven't found a way to download these old drivers from the AMD website as I am always pointed to the latest drivers and downloads from external sites are now disabled.

Any ideas?
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Struggling to get more than 630KH out of Sapphire 7950s on: January 11, 2014, 12:51:42 AM
I have tested all kinds of configurations and finally the highest hashrate I can get out of my 7950 cards (with stability) is 630 KH/s. I have seen people reporting hashrates of over 700KH but I just can't imagine how to get there at this point.

Currently the cards are configured as follows:
Intensity: 20
Powertune: 18
Memory freq: 1575
Engine freq: 1110
VDDC: 1.1 V

With these parameters I have the cards running stable at around 72°C. If I increase the engine frequency I might get a few more KH (not so many) but eventually the whole system hangs up or one of the cards appears as "DEAD" on cgminer. I have also tested a very wide range of different frequencies for memory and GPU engine but this is the best hashrate I have achieved.
69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / 4x7950 rig, unequal heating on: January 08, 2014, 05:04:20 PM
I have mounted the following rig:

and for some reason some of the GPUs heat up a lot more than others. I could understand that the one on the edge gets a little hotter, but not a difference of 17° with the coolest card.

I am running the fan of GPU 3 at 95% already. Any tips on why it could be getting so hot?
70  Bitcoin / Mining support / Windows failing to recognize GPUs from second PSU on: January 07, 2014, 12:55:24 PM
I currently have 4 Sapphire 7950s connected to my Z77A-GD65 MB, one plugged and 3 with powered risers. The plugged one and one of the rised GPUs are connected to the same PSU that powers the board, and the second PSU has pins 4 and 5 shorted and voltages are ok (measeured with multimeter). The fans spin but Windows just doesn't see the cards connected to the second PSU (the others work fine). Is there something I should consider?

I am using Corsair CX750 PSUs.

Cheers

71  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Multipool.us not showing hashrate on: January 05, 2014, 09:34:19 PM
I have started mining using 2x7950s and although cgminer shows roughly 600KH per card, multipool is now at 0 H/s. Initially DOGE hashrate was 150KH but then it slowly started going down, all the way to 0 (currently mining MNC).

I'm guessing this has something to do with the pool, right? What other multipools are there? Or is it better to just stick to mining a single coin?
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Newbie trying to set up a 6x7950 rig on: January 05, 2014, 12:37:35 AM
Hi,

I have got eveything needed to operate a 6x7950 rig, with powered 1x to 16x riser cables. I have 2 different setups:

- one with Win 8 pro loaded on an external HD
- one with Xubuntu on a USB drive

and right now I can't get either of them to detect my GPUs (currently only 2 are connected). I'm not sure if I've connected them properly: I plugged 2 6-pin power cables into each of them but not the molex connector of the riser.

I have the following doubts at this moment:
- How am I supposed to power 6 GPUs with the 2x750W Corsair PSUs if each of them only has 4 6-pin PCI-e outputs. Can a card work with only one of these?
- I guess I need a PCI-e to molex adapter to power the risers. In this case, can I disconnect one or both of the PCI-e power supplies of the GPU?
- Do powered risers also work in non-powered mode?

Sorry if some of these questions are a bit silly but I'm still digesting all the information that's out there and can't see the light.

Cheers
73  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Where to buy riser cables in the EU (or US) at a decent price on: December 19, 2013, 12:03:22 PM
I have found the following riser cable for 12.98€ on Amazon

http://www.amazon.de/Converter-Extender-Flexible-Extension-Connector/dp/B00HB1T54S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1387444191&sr=8-2&keywords=riser+1x+16x

However, it is sent from China and I don't feel like waiting up to a month for delivery (+ hassles with customs). The prices I've found in the EU are a lot higher though (over 30€ each). Do you know of any shops or sellers who sell these cables at decent prices?

Cheers

First Economy for Bitcoin owners
Seventh Continent is a digital commodities exchange in Bitcoin for privately run businesses: Let us build a better future together!

Comparative advantages:

•Seventh Continent Market is a new skill based investment opportunity for the Bitcoin community.

•Fair play, transparency, equal opportunities!

•“One Market One Trading” model means no OTC trading, no credit risk, no scams, no cheating possible, also prevents monopolistic positions and stealth or fraudulent second market transactions.

•Overtake the zero-sum game paradigm! On Seventh Continent Market digital products will be sponsored by brands (for instance energy drink will be renamed Red Bull, a rented car Avis sedan, hamburgers Big Mac or Whopper etc) paying a small advertisement fee each time a digital product bearing their brand name is sold on the Market. The fee will be divided fifty-fifty between users and operator. This way the sum of cash circulating on the Market will always be higher than the sum invested by the users!

•Investment risks on the Seventh Continent Market can be kept to a minimum since customers own the trading businesses and can have a relatively high influence on prices.

•Seventh Continent has currently no direct competition. Nevertheless it has the enormous advantage to create its own competition by opening very quickly new market places (China, South Korea, Germany, Argentina, Russia etc) in different cultural environments listing local products, in different languages, multiplying user base and sources of income alike.

•When real money for digital goods with no return loses its shine, a skill based market place where players accumulate fame and fortune stands a chance of being a real success.

•Flash front-end today and a brand new HTML5 front-end for February 2014, 3D platform for IV.Q.2014.

•Users will have the opportunity to list their real companies on Seventh Continent Market starting III.Q.2014.

75  Economy / Scam Accusations / Got scammed on Localbitcoins, received 650€ counterfeit money on: November 08, 2013, 03:16:53 PM
After several dozens of successfull transactions without any problems I became a bit too gullible and agreed to sell about 3BTC to a guy without any feedback, who initially tried out all sorts of excuses to avoid meeting me in person (instead he wanted me to give him my address so he could throw the money into my postbox, which I obviously refused). We met at night after he called my from a hidden number and I couldn't check the money properly (and I'm no expert either to recognize fake notes) so I only discovered that it was counterfeit next day when I was trying to deposit it into my bank account.

Needless to say, I had a terrible time (several employees came, took my personal data and kept the money to send it to the Central Bank). Once they confirm that it's fake I will have to go to the police and report the incident. I'm confident that I won't recover the money but at least I hope they can track his identity down from the call he made (although it's almost impossible to prove that the money came from him). Luckily I didn't try to pay anywhere with this money so hopefully I won't get into any legal trouble.

Lessons learned: buy a portable UV note detector and be tremendously cautious with anyone without a feedback and/or with a strange behaviour
76  Local / Deutsch (German) / Ich habe 650€ Falschgeld bekommen (localbitcoins) on: November 08, 2013, 02:41:02 PM

77  Economy / Securities / Possible quick and simple solution for a decentralized exchange on: October 10, 2013, 01:17:40 PM
I'm posting my idea here since it hasn't gotten much attention in the Project Development forum (0 replies). Maybe the securities forum is more adequate.

I have spent some time reading through the different proposals which are around to implement a decentralized exchange system (Mastercoin, Bitshares, Colored Coins, Hops, Open Transactions). I haven’t had enough time to review them all thoroughly but I have the impression that all ideas are great in their own way but they either tend to aim quite high leaving many implementation questions still open or need to rely on middlemen/escrows to complete transactions. Since time is against us after the recent events related to BTCT and Bitfunder, I think what we should initially aim for is a “quick and dirty” solution which gives us the basic functionality necessary for trading shares between two persons, and nothing more.

I have given this a quick thought and come to what I can foresee as a fast solution to this. I have taken ideas from several people in the group and simplified them as much as possible and added some thoughts of my own. I’m sure there will be several flows as I have many things going on and I haven’t dedicated more than a few hours to this.

Ok, so I will explain the idea: basically a “Sharecoin” is to be created, which will be 100% pre-mined and one share will correspond to the lowest divisible amount of the coin (“share-satoshi” if you will). A wallet will be created in BTC fashion and have a balance of X shares in it, public/private keys, etc, plus a field indicating the number of shares which are "locked" (unconfirmed sale) or "pending" (unconfirmed purchase).

A share transaction shall be completed in 3 steps:

1-   Share seller and buyer agree a price (initially in BTC, but other altcoins could be supported in the future) with each other using whichever means they prefer.

2-   The share seller sends a Sharecoin “payment request” transaction with an embedded message indicating:
        a.   Number of shares to be sold
        b.   Price in BTC per share
        c.   BTC address where payment is to be sent
        d.   Sharecoin address of buyer
        e.   Timeout of the transaction
This transaction is to be signed with the private key of the seller in order to prove the origin.

3-   After the transaction is confirmed (one confirmation should do) the shares are “locked” so that they can’t be sold twice (any request transaction involving locked shares is to be rejected immediately) and added as "pending" to the buyer's wallet. The buyer takes note of its code and sends the payment to the indicated BTC address and posts a "payment confirmation" Sharecoin transaction (signed with his/her private key) indicating:
       a.   BTC transaction code
       b.   Sharecoin transaction code of the original request

Now all the network has to do is to check that the payment has really been made and confirmed (maybe it can even be confirmed by Sharecoin nodes prioritizing that particular BTC transaction to give some speed, although I’m not sure if this is possible) and immediately the shares of the transaction shall be confirmed by the Sharecoin network. The shares assigned to the buyer’s wallet will no longer be "pending" and the locked shares will be removed from the seller's wallet.

After the defined timeout no "payment confirmation" transaction shall be accepted by the network. If after this defined timeout no payment has been received, the seller must send an “unlock request” transaction to be able to sell the shares to someone else. After confirmation of this transaction, the shares can be put on sale again.

This approach solves trust issues and removes the need for any middlemen, as the Sharecoin protocol would implicitly function as an escrow. It also avoids bloating the BTC blockchain with additional micro-transactions used to send messages. It does however require a certain linkage between the BTC and Sharecoin networks, and the way it is devised Sharecoin miners would not receive any rewards for confirming transactions or generating blocks. A possible variation to solve this last point would be to allow subdividing the shares (for example, leaving 1/1000th of a share for the miner confirming the transaction)

I'll be glad to receive your comments/criticism

P.S. I have no experience in Bitcoin-related development and my knowledge of the intricacies of the protocol isn't at pro-level either so I do realize I might have made some dumb assumptions.
