1  Economy / Goods / [WTS] 3D printed NFC-enabled Bitcoin Simulacra - Bling your cold storage! on: April 22, 2013, 08:14:57 PM
CryptoPrinter (www.3DP4BTC.com) presents: NFC enabled Bitcoin Simulacra!

Amaze your friends by explaining three of your favorite new technologies at once! This 3D Printed Bitcoin simulacra contains a 1k Mifare Classic NFC sticker embedded into gold PLA. (using open source hardware and software, incidentally)

We now also have NTAG206 NFC stickers, which offer slightly less writable space (~137 Bytes), but are more widely compatible than the Mifare 1k stickers.

Possible fun uses for your Bitcoin Simulacra:

  • Load a private key onto it for cold storage. (Or more than one private key!)

  • Load a public address onto it for NFC-enabled swipe and pay goodness (giving you an opportunity to explain how far ahead of the curve you are to everyone !)
  • Load a link to a (your?) website or a link to your account on the blockchain which shows your account summary!
  • Program the NFC tag to load your favorite wallet app when you swipe it with your phone
  • Demonstrate your acceptance of BTC (for brick and mortar merchants)

Important points to understand:

  • Coins are sold as blank slates - no account or key-related data would be written to the NFC chips upon purchase. I can't promise that we won't put our own website onto it to be cute.
  • Read/write ready Milfare 1k Classic NFC sticker w/ 716 Bytes of useful memory(we check to make sure that it's writable after being printed into the object)

For single coin orders, feel free to order here through bitmit:
https://www.bitmit.net/en/item/27285-3d-printed-nfc-enabled-bitcoin-simulacra

For orders of coins >5 please contact me with your tag preference so that I can plan for your order.

Thanks!

2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [ANN] 3D Printing Service accepting LTC http://www.3dp4btc.com on: April 01, 2013, 10:01:47 PM
Posted this a while ago here:  http://forum.litecoin.net/index.php/topic,1407.msg8549.html#msg8549

As nobody seems to use the litecoin forum I thought it was worth reposting here, especially given today's rally and the beta LTC android app.

PM me with questions.  What might you want 3D printed for litecoin you ask?  How about one of these:

5  Economy / Service Discussion / What kind of transaction policies are best for trading custom physical goods? on: March 07, 2013, 02:04:16 AM
So, i'm trying to offer the 3D printing service described here:https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148902.0

One of my new clients has asked an interesting point, which i'm not sure how to resolve in the long term.  I was looking for advice, and also thought that this might benefit from a larger discussion as it's the kind of problem that any service might encounter over time.

After talking with a client, he asked us this question” If for some reason the price of bitcoin jumps even more wildly I'll keep the payment to the equivalent asking price of $XYZ. Since you don't have hedged escrow does this sound fair?”

Our payment plan of “we trust you and you trust us” leaves us open to being left holding some fraction of our fees unaccounted for if a client never follows through with their final payment.  That in and of itself is not a big deal, but I guess this question gives me pause because of this:  This service is an experiment, a test of the bitcoin economy's health and the dynamic nature of the community.  It's a stone soup thing in that sense: the development and expansion of this service are predicated on the market demand for it.

You can now buy pizza for BTC.  Whomever is operating that service is doing something really neat:  Manifesting a physical good for BTC.  (Even better is getting donations to charity for BTC ala:  www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/19oiht/rbitcoin_lets_share_with_those_in_need_for_every/) Being able to feed yourself with something is coming pretty close to 'being money' to me.  Being able to pay rent, power bills, and shipping costs are still a ways off.  I worry that they will continue to be a slow deal as long as the main sources of physical goods available are VHS tapes on Bitmit (no offense intended).

Food is a funny thing like that: it's worth more than gold or bitcoin if you don't have it.  The 10,000 BTC pizza will live on in infamy.  It was paid for, eaten, presumably enjoyed, and now the story is all that's left.  Whatever BTC is costing now is what determines our offers, but we're not acting like investors - we're trying to live in a fantasy world where we could can use the BTC we earn to sustain the service we provide.  There's nothing close to a hope of making this a full time job.  If the community responds to overwhelm us, we will respond in kind - we think that's a long way off at this point, but are happy that you're considering having us work for you.

The price fluctuations and recent highs you mention are hard to get around without making someone feel disappointed.  In some sense, there's no way we can get around the fact that what you pay in BTC for a 3D printed object one day, might potentially buy many such things down the line.  At least you have a conversation/art piece from it, rather than a grease stain on a pizza box.

Our first customer seemed pretty happy to make the transaction independently of the market price for BTC.  I guess if you're having any qualms about purchasing from us, then maybe you've invested more into your BTC than you're willing to part with for a custom print job.  We want to make sure that you're happy, and that you will want to pay us the rest of what we've asked for our work.  If you feel like we didn't live up to the job, I guess that's where the ball is in your court.

Others offered these suggestions:  “Well, you can denominate your "half" either in USD or in Bitcoin. The real question is how to deal with escrow in a transfer currency (like Bitcoin) which fluctuates relative to the currency value you choose to denominate in (such as USD). The answer is to have the buyer submit the prescribed amount of Bitcoins to Escrow, plus a markup (50% or 100% markup should cover week and month long transactions safely) and then direct the escrow agent to release the appropriate funds to seller equaling the agreed amount of USD at time of transaction completion, and remit the "change" back to buyer.

When accepting payment plan from buyer, best strategy is to tender payments in bitcoin denominated in payment stages prescribed in USD. You agree on $100 USD total in $50 now, $50 later fashion, then buyer sends 1.25 BTC @ $40usd/btc = $50usd for first stage and then follows up with 1 BTC @ $50usd/btc = $50usd for second stage. :3"

and

"Price your goods in USD and then convert to show prices in BTC. When they pay, convert immediately to USD to avoid any price shift risk."

All of this makes operating in BTC as part of a long term strategy somewhat problematic, as you seem to have no idea what your assets are worth at any given time. Additionally, this introduces some disparity amongst buyer and seller if there is any confusion about the exchange rate used to pay the service.  How does the seller know that he’s been paid in full?  When he gets anything at all close to what he thinks he should get from the buyer, in this case.  What happened to using BTC as the means of transaction without the need for 3rd parties and their associated fees?   Is this even possible or am I insane?

Because of this, any future orders will likely start with an estimate of the current market value of our labor in USD.  We will allow our customer to bid in BTC until a price is agreed upon, after which time the price is locked - in BTC.  We will endeavour to honor our part of the agreement, and trust that our customers will fulfil their own part.
If you’re unsatisfied with what you get, it may just be your very own ‘10,000 BTC pizza’.  Think of it as an heirloom print, whose artistic value will only appreciate with time, especially if you can tell people what it’s REALLY worth in the future.  We hope you won’t hold that against us, just as we don’t think anyone should hold a grudge regarding the guy who sold a pizza for 10,000 BTC.

We’d love to hear comments on this issue/policy, especially from others who might have more experience in trading physical goods than we do.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [ANN] 3D Printing Service for BTC http://www.3dp4btc.com on: March 05, 2013, 02:54:57 AM
I posted an announcement in the Marketplace, but thought it might get more visibility here.  (Only doing this once)

Primary thread with more details here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148902.0

Feedback is encouraged (particularly constructive criticism), as we're doing this to help the body of services offered by the BTC economy, we want the community to be as big a part of what we do as possible and your input is appreciated.    Thanks!

While you can order 3D printed objects from shapeways and other recent startups, most of them do not accept bitcoin.  We are offering a 3D printing service to the bitcoin community specifically, hoping not just to toss one more hat into the BTC economy, but to provide a genuine service that enhances the value of BTC itself.  This includes some consultation with you to make sure that we can satisfy your request with a reliable product.  The number of potential goods offered is infinite.

To answer what could be your first question, we are covering the shipping fees ourselves until we find a way to pay BTC directly for postage, or come up with a better system.  There's no proof that the economy can handle such a service in a dedicated way, so we're doing this as a labor of love while trying to be open, honest, and not quitting the day jobs.    There's a lot of excitement with both 3D printing and Bitcoin, and so we are  taking the it slowly to make sure that we don't just get our faces sued into the pavement.

3DP 4 BTC   Additive manufacturing in the digital economy               (http://www.3dp4btc.com)

**Updated 6/5/2013

See this coverage of our service:  http://cryptojunky.com/blog/2013/05/27/3d-printing-for-bitcoin-combining-disruptive-technologies/

There are a number of services currently available (Shapeways, Ponoko, etc.)  which will take your fiat currency and 3D print you something from an STL file format.  To our knowledge, no one has been offering to 3D print objects for bitcoin (*at the time of writing, TechPaladin announced a similar service).  We're trying to change that, delivering you 3D printed goods made using entirely open-source methods (on our end), to expand the body of services/products available for BTC.  With 3D filament suppliers like ProtoParadigm and TechPaladin offering supplies for BTC, it is possible for this service to be somewhat self-sustaining in that we could potentially use BTC for filament (the primary cost of printing is the material used).  Our offerings will expand as we get more requests and suggestions. The more feedback we receive, the better we might become as a service, but the essence is something along the lines of "BTC in, widget of your choice out".

We already have the 3D printers (and didn't take out loans to get them like many companies trying to do this) so it seems like a natural opportunity to expand the ecosystem of BTC acceptors.   As others have expressed, this sort of service gives them something snappy to respond with when their dismissive friend asks "But what can you really buy with bitcoin anyway? Seems stupid to me!"

"Well, I use Bitcoin to get anything* I want 3D printed!"  you can reply. -- Take that, cynical friend!

As we don't have investors and we haven't quit our day jobs to do this,  the 3DP4BTC project is very much a labor of love and an experiment in what the community can do to bootstrap itself.   Trust and reputation are an important part of any process, and so we are starting small, working with whomever trickles in first, before expanding to a more involved system.

While there were several initial expressions of interest in the limited venues we polled, only a few BTC users have come knocking so far.  To those of you:  You’re our first customers, and we want to make sure that you’re happy with what you’ve received before making big promises that we can’t keep (like staying in operation).

*We are not trying to get ourselves in deep water so we might have to be selective regarding certain jobs.  More to say on this when our lawyers translate recent legal statutes from parseltongue to common english.

Capabilities:

What is the maximum/minimum size of the objects you can build?

We currently offer a maximum build volume of 200mm x 200mm x 120mm, though there are often ways to construct larger objects using prints of sub-components. We are looking to expand this volume in time.

Pricing and Payment:
We are using Shapeways pricing as a starting point, asking ⅘ of whatever Shapeways would ask for a similar thing converted to BTC (plus a small shipping fee (typically 0.15 - 0.25BTC)).  Extremely dense prints (for some specific application and not just for show) may cost more to cover materials.  Once the price is agreed upon it is set for the order.  If we feel that your object is likely going to take a few attempts to get correct, we will endeavour to express these concerns in advance, and include that in our proposed offer.  We are open to bids for projects.

We are currently using/reviewing several payment schemes:
A)  After agreement, object is printed and a photo is sent to customer.  Customer deposits ½ of total.  Object is shipped and Customer deposits final ½ of total price.

B)  After agreement, ⅓ is deposited to facilitate printing.  Object is printed and photo returned to customer.  Customer deposits ⅓ of total.  Object is shipped and Customer deposits final ⅓ of total price.

C) Escrow through Bitmit (2% fee)
Once we've agreed to an order and your order is finished, a buy it now for your order is put onto bitmit with Escrow.  You may then purchase the item, pay Bitmit, and release the fees upon receipt of the item.

We are currently defaulting to "Plan C" for new customers, with Plan A as an option for return customers.

Shipping:
When it comes to shipping, we’re planning to eat the fees currently, until we find someone selling stamps for BTC or something.  As we include a small BTC fee for this (typically ~0.10-0.25 BTC US, 0.2-0.5 BTC International), we feel that it’s worth paying out of pocket until someone (I’m lookin at you UPS/USPS) gets their act together and accepts BTC for such things.  Again, this is relying on the low-volume service we are offering and may be forced to evolve if demand grows beyond our capability to sustain this model.

On color availability:
  http://imgur.com/s3TKTOn
We will have a somewhat limited color selection until we can afford to buy more colors from PP.   If there's enough interest, we intend to make separate accounts for new color acquisition which people can donate to, as opposed to a more general donation to help the service.  Donations are not a part of our business plan, though we hope that happy customers might want to help expand our capabilities for future orders.   If there's a particularly colored small thing you want, just ask.  We might have a little nip of some odd color around, as we've had time to collect them.  (Certainly enough for a bitcoin simulacra, for example)

Expansion of service:
We're currently serving one or two people at a time, working with them to make sure that they get what they want, hopefully without delay.  The simpler the request, the better.  If you have a model that others have printed before, it’s much more likely that we can print it without issue.  If you have a new design of your own, we will work with you to negotiate any design problems.
In this sense, there is already a queue - contact us (me) to get in line.

In the long term, development of a BTC powered printing cloud isn't out of the question, either.  It would be really neat to synch up printers with projects nearby (ala http://www.makexyz.com/), potentially removing the need for postage (or as much postage perhaps, at least certainly reducing the time from maker to owner)
however there are some issues:  Not everyone with a 3D printer can be trusted to deliver a quality part.  We’re going to set that idea aside until we feel that it’s worth trying to implement (like if we can’t keep track of the submitted orders)

In short:  the more that people make use of this service, the more opportunity we will have to expand beyond what we are currently capable of offering.  If nothing else, it seemed cool to be able to turn BTC into real objects.

I'm looking to continue this conversation in further detail.

History:  I had posted some info along these lines last week and found a first customer on Thursday.  His order was shipped friday and perhaps he will be kind enough to give some feedback when his order arrives (hopefully Monday tomorrow).  We are happily awaiting more orders, so if you want something printed do let me know.

I think we're open to suggestions as far as operation goes, so please contribute your thoughts!   Our website should improve and evolve over time, and so we're open to suggestions there as well.

Also, Please ask questions so that we can build our FAQ!    Frequently Asked Questions   http://www.3dp4btc.com/faq/

10  Other / Beginners & Help / 3D Printing Service accepting BTC - which subforums are best for this? on: March 03, 2013, 10:27:44 PM
Hola all,

I'm working on a more detailed post to offer 3D printing services for BTC, after getting a pretty positive response from some other ends of the internet.  While I'm waiting for my account here to de-newb, I've been looking over the Marketplace subforums.  Problem:

I don't want to spam all of them with posts about this service, however I'm not sure where to go:
Goods, Services, Service Announcements (once there I guess), and Service Discussions all seem relevant at some level.

I'd certainly like to have a larger discussion about this service, particularly as there's a lot to say on the topic for those who are interested.  Can any wise forum members help direct my discussions so as to not offend the sensibilities of the rest of the forum?

Thanks in advance,
-EtherDais
