3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / FeedTheProtest to begin paying microbloggers in Bitcoin on: October 07, 2011, 09:49:56 PM
As many folks on this forum are aware, after we had issues with PayPal, FeedTheProtest.com (which has been covering the Wall Street Protests and working on a police brutality database) began accepting bitcoin donations. The generous support of the community has been overwhelming, as we've received more than a hundred coins thus far. A small portion of that sum has been used for a bus ticket to get me to and from the occupation to work on a few different projects, but we've also been brainstorming a way in which to use the donated bitcoins to support and expand our coverage while also supporting the spread and success of the general bitcoin project.

After much discussion as to how best to do this, we're pleased to announce our site's newest feature: a microblog for which contributors will be compensated in bitcoin. As the movement has expanded, it's become increasingly difficult to get a sense of what's happening moment by moment on the ground as the twitter channels have been flooded with content. Thus, we're currently in the process of recruiting  a pool of microbloggers on the ground (we have one confirmed, and he is seeking out others) who will be compensated 0.2 btc per short update for up to five non-redundant updates per day. We're hoping that this will create a consistent, but not overwhelming, stream up first-person updates, and it will also introduce many of the bloggers to the bitcoin project by providing them with a small stream of coins.

If anyone has other suggestions as to how we can integrate bitcoin directly into our coverage of the protests, suggestions are extremely welcome. Additionally, if you'd like to support our project with coins, head to http://www.feedtheprotest.com!

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Support the #OurWallStreet Protestors with BTC on: September 19, 2011, 08:49:16 PM
Hey all,

I've been watching the developments in NYC with great interest over the past few days, and have decided the time has come for me to join the occupation. I just purchased a train ticket and will be leaving at 8am EST tomorrow morning. As such, I was thinking that if anyone wants to send bitcoins to support the occupiers, I'll accept them and pass along the USD value of whatever's donated by the time I depart to the logistics committee members. As Robert Foster says on RapNews, "History is Happening"; any support will be greatly appreciated! 19MGtoaza6icCxfvbvo97SF83UgPmBurJo

P.S. It's actually getting MSM coverage today! http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/19/wall-street-protests-continue-with-at-least-5-arrested/?src=tp

P.P.S. I'll post the total on the board either before I leave or when I arrive and have internet...

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / The Bitcoin Business Review Launched! on: September 08, 2011, 12:38:15 AM
For those who have not been following the previous thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=39586.0), I'm pleased to announce the official launch of the Bitcoin Business Review http://btcbusiness.net/?q=about this evening! We've got an interview of Search Bitcoin's Jared Ostmeyer (http://btcbusiness.net/?q=node/14) to kick things off, and several community members have pieces in the works that should be expected in the coming week. A few things to note:

Advertisers

If you'd like to advertise on the BBR, we've initially set up two spaces on the site that are for rent through Operation Fabulous for a starting bid of 0.001 btc. As the project develops, expect more promotional opportunities to emerge.

Writers

If you'd like to have a piece published on the BBR, create an account and submit an article for review directly through the website. Policies for submitters are as follows:

I.   Submission and Publication

Articles submitted to the BBR must be original work that has not been previously published elsewhere. Writers who violate this policy may be banned from submitting future pieces at the discretion of the Editor, and any shared revenue to which the submitter would have been entitled will instead accrue to the article's true author or, if that author cannot be contacted, will be donated to a bitcoin community project such as the Bitcoin Faucet. Additionally, the final decision as to whether or not to publish an article is the Editor's.

II.   Compensation

Published writers are compensated for their work in bitcoin by the BBR through a revenue sharing system. At the end of each month, a potion (currently 50%) of the site's advertising revenue will go to the writers, pro-rated by the percentage of traffic that month was generated by that writer's articles. For example, if the site received 10,000 hits, and your articles comprised 500 of those page-views, you would be entitled to 5% of the bitcoins in that month's writer's pool. Disbursements will accumulate until a writer's balance reaches a level determined by the Editor, at which point they will be sent to a bitcoin address provided by the writer.

III.   Promotion of Articles by Writers

Writers are strongly encouraged to promote their pieces on all legitimate channels, but spamming will not be tolerated. Additionally, using illegitimate means to generate false hits as a way of increasing the size of one's share of revenue will not be tolerated, and might result in the offender being banned from the site and his or her illicit earning being donated to a non-profit cause that benefits the bitcoin community. The BBR's aim is to cultivate a collaborative, respectful community in which members deal with each other honorably, so such betrayals of the community's trust will be dealt with publicly and decisively.

Thanks for all the interest people have shown in the project thus far, and we're looking forward to this new adventure!

P.S. While still functional, the website is still very much under development; if you have any suggestions/feedback, send it along to kevin (at) btcbusiness.net
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Business Review - Call for Writers on: August 26, 2011, 07:32:21 PM
After having both run a small bitcoin business (http://www.iusecoins.com) and written and sub-edited the business section of the late Bitcoin Sun, it has become increasingly clear to me that the success or failure of our collective project ultimately rides heavily on the shoulders of the people who make the goods and services economy happen. As such, a vitally important way in which the scales might be tipped towards "success" is through the establishment of a high-quality and trusted journalistic forum to which both new and veteran bitcoin business people can turn for information on best practices, new trends, and valuable services. At the moment there is much writing on the technical and market side of things, but only the occasional article on how to run a better bitcoin business

To fill this void, I am pleased to announce the launch of a new website: the Bitcoin Business Review. The BB Review will not only aim to publish a wide range of articles of interest to the bitcoin business community, but we will also make sure that only the best and most relevant articles through an innovative new system (http://cuhistory.blogspot.com/2011/05/coming-micro-ownership-revolution.html). Instead of paying writers a fixed amount for their articles, they will instead be entitled to a share of the site's revenue, pro-rated by the amount of traffic that their article generated. Thus, if the site receives 10,000 hits, and a writer's article was responsible for 1,000 of those hits, the writer would be entitled to receive 10% of the revenue designated for the writers (to begin with, this will be 50% of the site's total revenue). Anyone may submit an article, but, starting out, we will only publish one per day, so readers will benefit from competition ensuring that only the most relevant and insightful articles make it to the front page.

If you're interested in getting involved with this project as a writer, we're interested in a variety of topics and formats: interviews, opinion pieces, product and service reviews, reflections on challenges you've experienced as a bitcoin business person and how you've overcome them, humor, etc. We should have the capacity to accept submissions by the end of next week, and should you have any questions or pieces you'd like to submit before our online architecture is complete, feel free to drop me a line over the forum.
11  Economy / Marketplace / What businesses lost their capital in the MyBitcoin fiasco on: August 02, 2011, 07:18:28 PM
I saw on another post that metacoin/squareware lost about 40 btc - any other businesses out there screwed by this? I'm trying to get a sense of what sort of damage this will do the the goods and services economy...

It seems that, as our prices were tied to mt. gox, its closure screwed up our site and people were unable to place orders for a week. It's now working again, though, and for anyone who was unable to order during that time, you can use the coupon code OUTAGE for the next week to get a 10% discount at http://www.iusecoins.com as an offset to the inconvenience...
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / My Response to the Good.is Hit Piece on: June 28, 2011, 10:26:56 PM
Several of my sympathetic friends have recently forwarded along the recent misleadingly titled hit-piece from a no-name online magazine called good.is. My sense is that it was written as link-bait as a way of getting themselves on the map, but it's embarrassingly bad: http://www.good.is/post/why-bitcoin-is-a-scam/

I decided to respond by writing a short letter to the site (submissions@goodinc.com):

Quote
Hi,

I just wanted to flag the fact that an article recently published on your website, "Why Bitcoin is a Scam" is titled in a very misleading way. "Scam" clearly indicates fraudulent intent, but the author does not in any way support (or even advance, for that matter) the thesis that Bitcoin was founded as a mechanism to defraud people of their money. He points to very real risks, but such risks do not = scam. I strongly encourage you to retract the current misleading title and replace it with something that actually reflects the article's contents.

Thanks Much!

If anyone else wants to join it the chorus, I think it'd be a good thing...
15  Economy / Marketplace / Has your business suffered an attack by hackers since the Mt. Gox crisis began? on: June 21, 2011, 01:42:02 PM
I'm trying to get a sense of the full negative impact of this on the economy for an article, and I discovered that http://www.iusecoins.com was hacked last night and the wallet might have been drained. Is this an isolated incident, or have others had similar experiences?

Hey all,

As the Business subeditor of the Bitcoin Sun, one of my weekly features as of late has been an interview with the principal of a bitcoin business. If you'd be interested in having an interview featuring your business run in a future issue, send me a private message with a brief (1-2 paragraphs) overview of your business, and, if it seems to be of interest, I'll hit you back with some more detailed questions.

20  Economy / Economics / Write Business Articles for the Bitcoin Sun! on: June 07, 2011, 12:43:50 PM
Hi all,

I'm the business subeditor of the Bitcoin Sun, and wanted to extend an invitation to my fellow econ/business nerds to submit articles. I'm looking for things that are either immediately relevant (i.e. emerging business practices, specific niches, etc.) or are insightful larger overviews of the state of the btc business world. If you've got an idea and want to try your hand, send me a message on the forum with a short summary of your proposed piece, and we can further discuss logistics and compensation. Hope to hear some good ideas!
