8  Economy / Speculation / $300 or $800 next? on: March 22, 2014, 08:50:33 PM
The price of Bitcoin is currently around $550.

Which do you think will happen first: a $250 decrease to $300, or a $250 increase to $800?
9  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Base58? on: March 21, 2014, 07:24:31 AM
Where can I find a Python function to convert bytes to base58 for addresses and wallet import format private keys?

The wiki only has what appears to be some kind of pseudocode.
10  Economy / Speculation / Inflation, deflation, and adoption? on: March 20, 2014, 02:40:25 PM
Currently, Bitcoin is inflationary because of miner rewards. This is offset because of adoption, so the price tends to go up over time.

As block rewards get smaller, the price should rise even without further adoption, or rise even more with further adoption, correct?

Does this mean that, even if only 10 times as many people are using Bitcoin by 2020 compared to now, the price should be more than 10 times as high?
11  Other / Meta / Rank signature rules? on: March 19, 2014, 11:00:28 PM
Are different ranks (Jr. Member, Member, Full Member, etc) given different restrictions in signatures? I've noticed that the paid signature I have always seems to show up red on Full Member and up, but blue on Members. Is this just a coincidence, or do Members and under have colors removed from their signatures?
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Sean's Outpost Under Attack on: March 19, 2014, 10:39:25 AM
Pensacola, the city which Sean's Outpost is in, as well as the county, are taking seemingly unfounded legal action against them.

"As of now a health inspector and code enforcer are being paid every week to inspect the property and no violations have been reported; in fact in the latest report it was written that the property has remained clean and orderly and is not in violation of any laws."

13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Scrypt ASIC? on: March 19, 2014, 01:33:42 AM
I've heard mixed information about scrypt mining hardware. At first I heard that it was designed to be GPU resistant, but almost all scrypt mining is done with GPUs. Now I hear it will be difficult or impossible to make a scrypt ASIC. Is this true?
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Currency identical to Bitcoin? on: March 18, 2014, 03:40:00 PM
Are there any cryptocurrencies that are 100% identical to Bitcoin, but with a different blockchain and a different name?

Terracoin is very similar to Bitcoin, but it has more total eventual coins, as well as a shorter block time.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Chart of pros and cons - any suggestions? on: March 17, 2014, 05:55:13 PM
I'm working on a chart to compare Bitcoin to other currencies and commodities. Here's what I have so far. Anything that should be fixed, or any lines I should add?

17  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Rapid decrease in mining power? on: March 17, 2014, 02:07:23 AM
The difficulty is changed every 2016 blocks (2 weeks). When the amount of mining power stays the same, this works fine because there's still a block every ~10 minutes. If there's a sudden increase in mining power (ASICs), this works fine because there's a block every couple minutes and the difficulty is fixed much sooner.

But, what would happen if lots of Bitcoin miners in the world had to stop mining for one reason or another (power shortage, natural disaster, government disaster). If mining power dropped suddenly so that there was only a block every 2 hours, it would take almost half a year for the difficulty to be fixed.

Wouldn't this be a problem? It's kind of a catch-22, the network needs more miners to speed up blocks in order to live without more miners  Undecided
18  Economy / Speculation / Over 70BTC bet that Bitcoin will be $10,000 by end of 2014 on: March 16, 2014, 08:20:25 PM
http://bitbet.us/bet/635/1btc-10-000-usd/

Which side do you think is right?

It's tough to predict so early, but I'm quite sure it won't be $10,000 for at least a few years.

20  Other / Off-topic / The Internet on a Disc on: March 13, 2014, 04:16:08 PM

I don't suppose anyone knows where an image of this can be found?
I'm interested to see what would have been on it.

It's pretty funny how, on a disc that can only store about 2 million bytes, they claim to have "millions and millions of sites".
