1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Remittances Using Bitcoin on: November 23, 2016, 03:57:25 PM
A lot has been written about using Bitcoin to cut remittance costs and putting the Western Unions of this world out of business.
But given the premium that bitcoin commands in India, users can actually profit while remitting funds to India.
That is a nice thought!

Bitcoin's journey from money laundering appeal to teaching the banks

Bankers and economists are finding fresh virtues in the digital currency bitcoin at a time when the gold price is trading at close to six-year lows. So much so that the prominent American economist Bhagwan Chowdhry has nominated bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto for the 2016 Nobel Prize in economics.

Chowdhry, a professor of finance at UCLA, was asked by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to nominate a candidate for the prize, and chose Nakamoto because bitcoin "is nothing short of revolutionary".

Behind the "exodus" of bitcoin startups from New York

http://fortune.com/2015/08/14/bitcoin-startups-leave-new-york-bitlicense/

Bitcoin executives—even those who chose to apply for a license for their company—have gripes about the final set of rules, and are still hoping to see it change. This weekend, many of them decided to make a statement: rather than apply for the license, they left New York. For some with physical headquarters in the state, that meant literal moving trucks. For others it meant cutting off service to New York-based customers.

Should Small Businesses Bet on Bitcoin?

Imagine stepping into a cafe where you're worried they don't take credit cards. But while you're painstakingly counting out your dollars, the cashier says: "We take cash, cards and bitcoin."

That's what's happening every day at Pittsburgh ice cream parlor Oh Yeah! And the small eatery isn't the only place offering an expanded range of payment options to its customers.

Beyond Bitcoin: How The Blockchain Could Disrupt Our Financial System

http://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2015/08/11/beyond-bitcoin-how-the-blockchain-could-disrupt-our-financial-system/

If you haven’t been paying attention to Bitcoin because you don’t understand how a digital currency might be relevant to your business, you might want to reconsider.

It’s unlikely that Bitcoin will replace the dollar, pound, Euro, or yen anytime soon (or ever). However, you’re still going to be hearing a lot more about it. That’s not because people are willing to consider it money. What’s most interesting about Bitcoin actually has very little to do with money — and everything to do with its underlying technology, known as the blockchain, which could challenge our assumptions about what makes commerce secure and trustworthy.

Bitcoin miners create invalid currency after a botched upgrade

http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/04/bitcoin-miners-create-invalid-currency/

Digital currencies are only as reliable as their software, and some Bitcoin users are learning this the hard way. Thanks to a "problem" with an upgrade that applies a new rule, some Bitcoin mining pools (namely, those that don't usually wait to validate their money) have been generating invalid data blocks. If you're using certain client apps, that could lead to making transactions that aren't really valid -- and mining operations that ran afoul of the change are losing income.

Fearing return to drachma, some Greeks use bitcoin to dodge capital controls

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/07/03/us-eurozone-greece-bitcoin-idUSKCN0PD1B420150703

There is at least one legal way to get your euros out of Greece these days, to guard against the prospect that they might be devalued into drachmas: convert them into bitcoin.

Although absolute figures are hard to come by, Greek interest has surged in the online "cryptocurrency", which is out of the reach of monetary authorities and can be transferred at the touch of a smartphone screen.

New customers depositing at least 50 euros with BTCGreece, the only Greece-based bitcoin exchange, open only to Greeks, rose by 400 percent between May and June, according to its founder Thanos Marinos, who put the number at "a few thousand". The average deposit quadrupled to around 700 euros.

With worries over Greece's status in the euro zone leaving some investors wary about the state of the euro, bitcoin wallet company Coinbase is offering to waive fees for customers using the European currency to buy or sell the cryptocurrency.

Coinbase's founder and CEO, Brian Armstrong, told CNBC's "Squawk Alley" that he's seen a fourfold increase in people buying bitcoin across the euro zone in just the last 48 hours

With Greek Uncertainty, Investors Seek Safety in Gold and Bitcoin

http://www.wsj.com/articles/with-greek-uncertainty-investors-seek-safety-in-gold-and-even-bitcoin-1435705212

As Greece descends into financial crisis, its citizens and investors globally are turning to hedges old and new.

European demand for the age-old safe haven of gold coins has risen in recent weeks, as has the relatively new concept of investments in digital bitcoins, market participants say.

As the situation in Europe grows more precarious, the price of both have risen in recent weeks as concerns have grown about the threat to banks in Greece and the risk that turmoil could spread to other countries in the eurozone and elsewhere.

Bitcoin Bucket Shop Kicks Bucket

http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-06-19/bitcoin-bucket-shop-kicks-bucket

Sand Hill Exchange was a blockchain bucket shop that let people bet on the eventual public-market prices of hot startups. That is so illegal! It was shut down more or less as soon as anyone noticed that it existed, but the wheels of justice ground slowly on. A few weeks ago, Sand Hill announced that it had settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a $20,000 fine, but the announcement quickly disappeared, leaving me to suspect that the entire thing was just a dream, or a performance art project. But this week the SEC finally announced its enforcement action against Sand Hill, along with an Investor Alert warning of "fantasy stock trading websites."

If you watch Mike Judge’s brilliant HBO comedy series “Silicon Valley” (and why wouldn’t you?), then you’ll snicker at the number of times bitcoin evangelists say that they’re changing the world. In 2015 technological innovations can’t just be cool or practical; they must promise to Make the World a Better Place.

What sets the digital currency bitcoin apart is that it is actually poised to transform our lives (or at least our money), as Nathaniel Popper, a New York Times reporter, chronicles in his breezy and informative book “Digital Gold.” The question is: Is it changing the world for the better? It depends on which one of Mr. Popper’s many characters you ask.

15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / What is the 'best' coin to mine with CPUs? on: September 13, 2014, 11:30:08 PM
For a long time, Primecoin was 'the' CPU coin along with a few others.  But, I haven't really seen much as far as the 'most profitable' cpu coins to mine; its all ASICs and GPUs.

Are there any coins worth mining with just CPU?
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Help configuring SGminer - Able to restart an 'overheated' card??? on: August 10, 2014, 01:16:19 AM
I have a three GPU rig machine with tempcut off at 95.  Sometimes when the weather is really hot, the middle card, actually reaches 95 degrees.  It shuts off like it should, but then it never turns back on.  When I get home, its at ~40 degrees and is 'mining' at 0.000 khash/s.  Huh

Is there some kind of flag or setting I can add to my config file to tell it to 'restart' once its cooled down?  It happens about twice a week in the summer - I'd hate to underclock the cards for just a few hot hours in the afternoon.
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Best GPU mining option? on: August 08, 2014, 10:47:40 PM
I’m a small miner (about a half a dozen graphics cards – 7770s, 7970s, etc) and I’ve been Script mining on ScriptGuild since it’s opened.  At the time, script ASICS were just a rumor and script was the most profitable algo to mine.  ScriptGuild is closing down and I’m looking for a new home.  I'm out of the loop with x11, x13, x15, keccak and scrypt-n.  I’ve just spent the last 5 or 6 hours reading, and trying to figure out ‘which is best.’

From what I gathered, all of these are 'better' then mining Script since the new Script-ASICs.  Is there anyway for a GPU miner to switch to the most profitable algos?  Or is one better for a GPU only miner like me?  Or should I just stick with Script mining since I already have the configs made?

20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Litecoin Difficultly !?!? on: December 16, 2013, 11:17:54 PM
I was just looking at my wallet, and I noticed that my automatic payouts were much further apart then normal.  So I took a look at the current Litecoin difficultly and was very surprised.  I had remembered LTC having a pretty stable difficultly, without a lot of variance.  However, it looks like it has recently tripped.

Date         Difficulty  Change   Hash Rate
Dec 16 2013   3,094    5.74%    88,604 MH/s
Dec 12 2013   2,927    8.60%    83,795 MH/s
Dec 09 2013   2,695   21.44%   77,158 MH/s
Dec 06 2013   2,219   12.93%   63,534 MH/s
Dec 03 2013   1,965   13.30%   56,259 MH/s
Nov 30 2013   1,734   13.89%   49,654 MH/s
Oct 31 2013   1,080   -6.59%   30,934 MH/s
Sep 30 2013   1,064   -9.02%   30,475 MH/s
Sep 01 2013   1,102   17.92%   31,563 MH/s
Jul 25 2013      913     2.10%    26,142 MH/s

Any ideas what the driving factor of this might be?  I know bitcoin (and my proxy, litecoin) has greatly raised in price the month or two, but this is a major increase to the network's mining speed.  This is basically suggesting that the number of GPU miners tripped in the last two months.

Has there been any updates on possible ASICs that are able to mine scrypt-coins?
