1  Other / Beginners & Help / How to add public comments to transactions? on: February 23, 2017, 09:20:26 PM
Something that's puzzled me since forever but I never got around to asking.... Sometimes when viewing transactions on blockchain.info, some transactions have public comments beside them, like "payout to Joe Bloggs" or "Merry Christmas".  How do they get there?  If I want to send somebody some bitcoin with the comment "Happy birthday", how do I do it?  Can it be done from Bitcoin Core wallet?
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Accounting question on: January 24, 2017, 03:35:01 PM
I don't know how anybody else manages their crypto accounting but I have a spreadsheet for each coin I own, and each time I buy/sell, I log into my spreadsheet the date, the exchange used, the amount of coin and the corresponding value of fiat.  At the bottom I have formulae to calculate the totals so I can keep track of how much of each coin I have, how much fiat it cost me, etc... and I also have separate formulae to show me the average fiat spend per coin and also to show the notional profit/loss any time I update the coin valuation.  So far all good, it works.

However, today, I traded one coin for another (BTC to altcoin) and I'm looking for advice on how I should manage the fiat value in my accounting.  I would have matched the amount of BTC I exchanged to an original BTC purchase and used the same fiat value, effectively reversing that transaction and putting the same cash value to the alt instead, but on this occasion I don't have any corresponding BTC purchase I can match it to.  So how do I assign a fiat value to the operation?  I could take the mean average of my BTC spending to date..., I could apply today's valuation... though I don't know whether I'd take the alt/BTC or the alt/fiat...

How do more experienced traders do this?
3  Other / Meta / Consequences of having deleted posts? on: January 15, 2017, 02:42:55 PM
I don't want to be over-dramatic here and I'm sure that 6 posts deleted by moderators out of 208 really isn't bad in the grand scheme of things, but given that 5 of those posts have been deleted in the past week for being off-topic, I can't help but wonder how many lives I've used up.  I know it's entirely my own fault because I can't resist hitting the submit button when I think I have a "clever" reply Tongue so I will try harder on the self-censorship.

Just for clarity though, I'd like to ask how many more deleted posts would put me in danger of being banned?  I'm not in a sig campaign as I know my post quality won't stand up to too much scrutiny, but I'd hate to get myself branded a spammer anyway.
4  Economy / Trading Discussion / What's the deal with SEPA transfers being reversible? on: January 14, 2017, 01:49:24 PM
I'm starting to consider trying my hand at localbitcoins and similar, but while researching I keep coming across claims that SEPA transfers cannot be trusted because the sender can recall them.  Can anyone give me a definitive answer on this, please, as I have worked in a European bank and have never known a SEPA transfer to be returned without the express written consent of the beneficiary.

Thanks.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How do you make provision for the tx fees? on: November 13, 2016, 05:29:48 PM
This might seem like a silly question and a bit pedantic but it's been bugging me for a while, so I'll ask in case anybody can offer a suitable strategy for making provision for transaction fees.

A while ago I bought 1/4 of a bitcoin to give as a gift, well, two gifts to be precise.  I already gifted half of that, ie. 1/8th BTC, but after paying the transaction fee I no longer have a whole eighth to send as the second gift!  I now have to buy more bitcoin, at the much higher price it is now, just to replace the fee for the transaction I've already sent and cover the new transaction I'm going to make, so that I can send the complete gift as intended.  I know, I should have thought of this when I initially bought the quarter and I wish I had!  (I bought this at $590!!)  But I was a newbie and I didn't think of it.  I do have additional bitcoin that I've bought for myself, but that's all round numbers as well, and now I'm aware that if I ever want to use that I will have the same problem of having to buy extra to cover the fee before I can send any.

So, clearly, in the future, it's no good me just buying the amount of bitcoin that I want - I will have to buy more as well for future fee provision.  But how much more should I add on to my purchase each time?  How does anybody else handle this?
6  Economy / Reputation / Is there a club for people given red trust by Atari's alts? on: November 08, 2016, 08:15:58 AM
If there is I seem to have joined it  Grin  I have been given red ratings by three of his alts in total (so far), which as we all know, is equivalent to a green rating from anybody else.  Woohoooo, I feel like I have finally arrived  Cool

Edit:  Crap, I've posted in the wrong board, haven't I?  Spoils it a bit LOL...
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin as a gift for a baby? on: September 07, 2016, 09:17:39 PM
Serious question.  My baby niece will be 1 year old in a few weeks and she's going to get lots of lovely and expensive presents from all the family, but I'm her geeky aunt and I want to encourage her geeky side.  I'm considering making her a vanity address , printing it on a paper wallet and funding it with some bitcoin, in the hope that by the time she's old enough to appreciate it, the value might have appreciated also.  But I have some concerns...

Is a vanity address sufficiently secure if I generate it and the paper wallet offline and assume my computer has no malware?  (I have enough antivirus/anti-malware software in action and really, if I do have that level of malware, I'm screwed anyway)

And the impossible question... is bitcoin a reasonable risk for such a long term investment?  If she's 1 now, it could be 15 years before she accesses the funds in that wallet.  I won't be able to sell out if I see a crash coming like I can with my own.  I know nobody can really judge what Bitcoin is going to do over that period and I don't want this to turn into yet another one of those speculation threads where people post crap.  So I guess my real question here is has anybody else done this or put bitcoin in cold storage for a similarly long period?

And are there any other considerations I haven't thought of?
8  Economy / Service Discussion / Any benefit to using a payment gateway for RL service? on: August 23, 2016, 02:53:08 PM
I am preparing to start my own business offering real life services to my local community.  Most people will want to pay me by bank transfer or in cash but I'd like to offer the option to pay in Bitcoin just in case.  In theory, shouldn't it be sufficient just to display my BTC address on my website?  Is there any benefit to using a payment gateway/merchant plugin in this case? I suppose it would be ideal if the website automatically generated some kind of receipt or confirmation for the client, but I'll be having personal contact with all clients anyway so I can confirm all payments received personally the same way I would for payment by bank transfer.

Any thoughts or opinions on this?  Am I overthinking things??  Roll Eyes Smiley

Edit:  I've thought of something!  How would I handle the fiat/bitcoin conversion so they'd know how much to send me??  My website is built on Wordpress so any plugin recommendations would be appreciated  Wink
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / How to import private key to Bitcoin Core? on: August 08, 2016, 06:58:00 PM
I have just created myself a vanity address and I understand that I need to import the private key to my wallet.  I am using Bitcoin Core v0.12.1 and have tried to do this using the console and "importprivkey" command, but after accepting the command, nothing else seems to happen.  The instructions I was following said my address should now show in "Address book" but I don't have an address book tab, only Overview, Send, Receive and Transactions.  I have figured out how to make a paper wallet in the meantime, so I could eventually scan the QR code with my mobile Bread wallet, but I really want to put it on my PC.  Is there a way to do this?  Or a better way that I'm missing?
